When people ask me to name the best amateur RPG I've ever played, I'm stuck to decide between Starless Umbra (which is still in development) and The Way (which is finished).
It's free to download and play. The Way was made with RPG Maker 2000 by Lun Calsari. No profit is made in any way by the author.
If you don't have the time or patience, a Youtuber who goes by Malefact is doing a video series on The Way, which covers an entire playthrough.

Interesting, never heard of it.. but im kind of busy playing Darkfall at the moment -
It starts off linear and you lose the first few Plunge duels, but it really picks up in episodes 2 and 3.

Bump.
There's a lot of philosophy and poetry used in The Way. Some of it is more subtle than the others.
For example, the four transcendent auras (most powerful in the game), Aionsluh, Pandamaare, Hatassassar, and Illuminati, can be viewed as metaphors for chaos, evil, law, and good (in that order). (Also, that's the four transcendent sword auras ordered from strongest to weakest.)-

Those are like WAY cool.
I tried getting through Fairytales... got to the war zone couldn't figure out how to get past it without cheating.
That's when I hate RPGs, when you have to use a CHEAT to get through them.
Then it's someone else's game - no longer yours.
