The World without computers & internet ?
Really,, It sounds horrible.
Imagine this for once & write what would be the current situation with pros & cons.

I lived through those times. It was horrible! When we wanted a friend, we actually had to talk to people face to face. When we wanted to write them something, we'd have to use this stuff called paper and ink and then lick stamps and get disgusted by the taste of that AND the glue on those envelope things, then carry it all to a letterbox and then wait DAYS for a response. It was more exhausting than a performance art piece. We could always use the "telephone" but even then you had to strain yourself pulling your finger through this round thing called a dial.
Then when we wanted to get information about ANYTHING, we'd have to get off our asses and into a thing called a library, where we'd have to breathe in all this dust and stuff that settled on what they called "books."
Living standards were poor. There were 150 of us living in a hole in the ground covered with canvas. It would fill with water so we'd all have to get out of bed at four in the morning, drain the hole, get up, make breakfast for me mom and dad, walk to school 25 miles away, walk home in the dark, then do it all again.
And you try to tell the young people today that, and they won't believe you. -

If computers had never existed, just like cellphones and the like, we would manage. But now that we've had these for so long, it's hard to imagine life without them.
-
Yah...that is how I feel about my microwave oven. The first ten years of my adult life, I didn't have one. Now I sometimes wonder how I managed without it!
When I moved to South Africa five years ago, I had to re-learn how to prep veggies and clean up after cooking without a disposal...and how to wash and dry dishes. Nobody here has a garbage disposal and dishwashers are pretty rare ducks. On the upside, however, I do have a maid, something I didn't have in the US.
I grew up in the 50s and 60s and the transistor radio (AM only) was the "got to have" item of my teen years. We had engaging and interesting lives without computers and the internet, so it obviously can be done and done happily. Unfortunately, you can't "un-know" something, so going back to that time would be rather frustrating after living with the silicon beasties for so long (I've had a computer for 21 years).

Well, I agree that it would be frustrating and inconvenient to live without computers and the Internet. I couldn't keep in touch with people as easily.
However, at the same time, maybe our relationships would be better. I think that technology has a certain way of alienating people. I've noticed that I'd much rather see people face to face than chat with them online or even through text messaging.
Sure, you can talk to a lot of people on the Internet but what is the quality of those relationships? -
Maybe computers alienate people in the physical sense, but not at the mental level. Right now we're engaging in conversation despite our geographic separation. My wife is from Germany, but thanks to computers she can video conference with her Mom on a daily basis. During Christmas, her Mom watches our kids open their presents over the web cam.

It's a strange phenomenon the internet and computers. It does connnect us but also creates misunderstanding and a lack of communication. Studies show a very large percentage of human communication is body language. I think that is lost here.

This conversation thread reminded me of a funny Onion video that came out in 2007.
Breaking News: All Online Data Lost After Internet Crash

I'm just bummed nobody called me out on that blatant Monty Python rip-off in my response.
I realllly must be old. -
A world without the Internet would make at least one group of people happy (librarians) and one group unhappy(_).

I got my first computer when I was 20, got connected to the net, when I was 22... So I can say I happily lived without it for 22 years. Used the phone, wrote letters. Oh, those happy nostalgic memories... I think, there is some magic in sitting down and writing a letter by hand, and then posting it and living in anticipation for the next xxx days or even months. In a meantime you spend a lot of time reading books, good ones, not just junk for the brain. And you see real people every day.
And they become your friends.
But. I can honestly say I am addicted to the net. I love it and it helps me now since all my friends and family are really far from me and not having an e-mail would kill me. Net is also a giant library and source of information. It's fun. It helps to find new friends and even more than friends
I suppose, every period of time has something special about it, but I wouldn't want to go back, I want to move forward, all the time and have an opportunity to connect to the www. -
Been there and done that also and we did fine. Just had to arrange and do things differently.
Growing up in the UK we didn't have a telephone, or any of the technology that we take for granted but it sure has made things easier. When I first came to the USA 1978 I couldn't just call England, I had to book a call by calling the operator here and she would call the operator over there and then call me back and let me know if the connection time was available. The cost of a phone call was horrendous, so calling home was a luxury we could barely afford.
I love the possibilities and conveniences that come with the internet, especially being able use skype and keep in touch with family overseas. while I don't think life would be horrible without the internet, it sure makes life a lot easier in so many ways. -
Pros and Cons
w/Internet
You can order your drugs on line
wo/Internet
You had to stand out in the freezing cold waiting for your turn to crawl through a hole into a burnt out building and deal with some nasty people that may or may not like you enough to even sell to you. Then you had to take your chances of getting out of that area with your product without getting ripped off. Get on this thing they call a train and travel for 2 hours, all the while itching to enjoy your product. With cops looking at you, and people sensing that you have something to hide. Then you have to get by the questions when you enter the door, "where have you been, what have you been doing" And once you have accomplished this journey you make your way into the bathroom to start to finally enjoy your product.
I sure miss the good old days. ;-) -
It wasn't too long ago for me, that I didn't have interent or computer and I did just fine. But I wonder how I ever managed? Now, sadly, it would be torture without the computer or internet. This question definitely makes me take a second to appreciate what I have. Mapquest, electronic billing, yahoo, google...etc. Everything is so much more convienient.

I'm one of those archaic, over-the-hill has- beens, longing for return of the "good old days."
In the glorious 1970s I sold over a million copies of my books, mostly through good old mail-order. Now, with the Internet revolution, I can't sell my way out of a paper bag.
Times have certainly changed for me all right--all to the down side. -
I grew up in that world, actually. We also didn't have remote controls for the TV or cable/satellite options, which meant that the few channels available actually went OFF THE AIR at the end of the broadcasting day! Oh...and we had big, clunky, rotary phones, too. And we used to eat the bark off of trees for fun. Okay, okay...so I made up that last bit!

I grew up without computers and internet...my kids can't imagine that world. Heck, we didn't even have a tv growing up...the horror! We played more outside, got along better because if you wanted to play you had to play fair or sit in your house alone. We knew our neighbors and our neighbors's neighbors.
I had penpals and waited anxiously for weeks to get a return letter, and we got post cards when people went on vacation. I love my computer and I love the internet but back then really wasn't so bad either. -
This is a possibility due to the increased solar activity coming in 2012 you just might have to deal with it for a while.

But we will do just fine without it.
