My wife and I are taking a trip to New York City next month and we're trying to decide what to do. So far, this is our list:

Statue of Liberty
Metropolitan Museum of Art
Empire State Building
Grand Central Station
Rockefeller Center
Ellis Island Immigration Museum
Staten Island Ferry
Central Park
Maybe the David Letterman Show

Any other "must see or do" in NYC?

Skip the Staton Island Ferry and take the 3 hour island cruise. It costs about 10 dollars a person and is worth every penny.

If you're going to the Empire State Building, wait until really late in the evening. During the day, the lines are horrid and you get a beautiful view in the evening.

I also suggest having at least one fine dining experience while you are in New York and do NOT skip SoHo and Greenwich Village.

      Good idea!
    2. jflower36
Yeah, I did that too and it was really nice.

Also, the Guggenheim is DO NOT MISS. If you're going to Central Park, stop at the Guggenheim as it is perched on the Upper East Side of the park. The collection at the Guggenheim is always changing, but the building is one of Frank Lloyd Wrights most beautiful accomplishments.

I also enjoyed China Town, the stock market trade on wall street, and if you can, see a Broadway show.

You have to get pizza while in NYC if you like pizza. They got the best pizza seriously.

If you feel comfortable enough going to Harlem, you will get a little ethnic culture. My grandma and I took a subway there to visit Columbia University and it was a neat area.

I really enjoyed little Italy and Chinatown. Don't buy a fake bag or dvd's from vendors on the street. It's really illegal and they're really poor quality.

If I can suggest a restaurant, Balthazar is fantastic for fine dining. For ice cream and dessert, Serendipity on the Upper East Side is famous for a reason. It's awesome! It's also typically a three hour wait.

You ever eat at Dallas BBQ? There are a couple, think the one was on St Marks well it was close to "alphabet city" but I don't where the others were. Not a big menu but good food and the drinks are excellent!
    2. Stillthinking
No, but I will next time I go back! I have been three times and honestly, still haven't seen everything I want to see in NY. I never made it to MoMA or the Met. Everytime I went, it was always with people who didn't want to visit museums.
    3. chicky401
The city is great I used to go at least 3 times a week. Haven't been in a while though I am not far from it.
    4. Stillthinking
Ah, I am in Chicago. Actually, I have enough airline miles for a round trip ticket to NYC. I should go by myself for a long weekend. Go see everything I missed the previous times.
    5. DollinNYC
ugh Dallas BBQ is a chain. A friend told me when I moved to the city that if anyone took me there on a date to make that the LAST date!
    6. chicky401
Oh I wouldn't recommend it for a date!!! It's just that if you are in the city alot or live in the city it is a good place to get BBQ and a good drink on occasion. But then again I used to like hanging down by alphabet city.

New York is one of my favorite cities. I could talk about it all day. Also, on the Hudson river, there is this sweet little gourmet cooking and flower market. Fantastically fresh seafood and produce. Locally made jams and jellies. Very cheaply priced gifts.

Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of Art, Guggenheim, The Jewish Museum, NY Public Library (main branch), Frick Museum, Ground Zero (if you are so inclined), Katz's deli (a must-visit famous deli on the lower east side), Peter Lugar steakhouse, Circle Line ferry tour around Manhattan......will post more later when I remember all that I left out.

    Also: Brooklyn Botanical Gardens.

Once you're here, pick-up a Time Out Magazine at any newsstand for the best listings of current shows, museums, galleries, readings, cultural events, talks, etc.

Forgot to add: you're interested in Buddhism, so you must visit the spectacular Rubin Museum in the west village:

    and Tibet House:

Great suggestions Lisa- Ditto on the Time Out magazine! David Letterman show is fun! I went to a few tapings when they first moved to the Ed Sullivan theater. Write to them now and tell them you will be in town and would like tickets- you never know. They may send them and that will save you the hassle of stand-by!

    I'll add more later too..

What are your interests? I lived there for 4 years while in school but I lean toward blues clubs and Chinatown. It really depends on where your interests are and your time frame. I lived across from Union Square Park for a couple of years, in Washington Square the first year and Soho the last year.

Metropolitan Museum of Art is a don't miss, but other than that the rest of the stuff is whatever peaks your interest. I know a lot of people find that lengthy island tours quite tedious so it depends on the individual I guess. I favor Chinatown, where believe it or not you can find some great deals...and not on the rip-offs, skip that and don't follow anyone down a back alley, you can find some deals from the vendors on a lot of things.

Century 21 is one of the most famous shops in the city for ridiculous discounts. Check it out if you visit Ground Zero, since it's right around the corner. But it's always VERY crowded:

    1. Agit8r
Ground Zero? Is that a club?
    2. Stillthinking
I went there! I wanted to look around, but the friend I was with kept whining.
    3. Agit8r
      the Ground Zero Club?

I've heard that it's THE BOMB!
    4. chicky401
I haven't been to ground zero. I haven't been in the city in a long time though.
    5. chicky401
@Agit8r it's not a club it's the spot where the towers once were before 9/11
    6. Stillthinking
He's knows that, he's being a jack ass.
    7. chicky401
I'm not as quick as usual right now. Had a couple strawberry daquiris and I usually don't drink LOL. Things may register a little slow for a while
    8. Agit8r
      a jackass... me? never

If you are into modern architecture at all, Rem Koolhaas' Prada store in Soho is a quick, fun stop.

Hey New Yorkers, is it still open?

Have you picked a hotel to stay in yet? I would advise AGAINST staying anywhere near Times Square. Really overpriced and really touristy.

Must See or Do ideas from a Native New Yorker:

New York is a wonderful City to walk around in:
-Walk from the Hudson river to the East River
-Coney Island (not sure what the story is with it now but some of the old flavor might still be there)
-The Tenement Museum in the Lower east Side
-Chocolate by the Bald Man down by Union Square - if you love chocolate in just about everything and like places that remind you of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
    -the Bronx Botanical Gardens
-Check out some Spoken word at the Nuyorican Poet's Cafe or the Bowery Poetry Cafe
-For Jazz go to St. Nick's up in Sugar Hill in Harlem or Small's down in the West Village (if it's still open)
-The Museum of American Folk Art
-Go see 'Joe Turner's Come and Gone' by August Wilson on Broadway if you're into heavy plays and want to have your mind blown (there are plenty of other plays if you want to see something MUCH less heavy)
-go to to the famous Sylvia's soul foud restaurant on 125th Street
-Go to spanish Harlem and eat Puerto Rican and Dominican Food
-Do a search to see when and where some street fairs might be going on
-Walk around the West Village and go to a piano bar like Arthur's tavern
-Eat at Sri Pra Phai thai restaurant in Queens
-Go to Negril's in Chelsea and the West village if you like tourist friendly Jamaican food, if you want it straight, no chaser,(and much cheaper) go to the Bronx or Brooklyn (GOOGLE SEARCH)
-Rent bikes in the West Village (Morton Street, I think) and ride way, way up along the Hudson as far as you like.

*Hurry and do as much as you can in New York because it is changing rapidly. So many old, cool things are being torn down. Enjoy yourself and remember that though parts of it have been unfairly stigmatized and misrepresented, New York is a city full of wonderful, interesting, creative people. Enjoy!

I liked Letterman when I was younger all the time. He seems too liberal though for me now. I don't watch him anymore. But, it is good to see the guest on the show. He has some big names.

This is a great page. I think I got one other.

This part is so true. I just ignore.

New York has its share of odd people: talkative pan-handlers, lonely people just wanting a chat, people with psychological disorders, etc. If someone approaches you for a chat, do what most New Yorkers do: completely ignore them or say "Sorry, gotta go" while continuing to walk at a brisk pace.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Museum of Natural History; while it's often loaded with little kids, it's good for an afternoon of personal regression. The last time I visited, they had an exhibit with tropical butterflies: one walked into a sealed room in which the butterflies were floating around, filling the air with spectacular dots of colour.

Also, Lincoln Centre is worth a visit if you can get tickets for a concert or opera (though the season is near its end, I believe).

If you enjoy dessert, you must seek out Beard Poppa. Have fun! NYC is one of my favorite places.

Ooooo.......great reminders you guys! Museum of Natural History is one of the greatest spots in towns. Fantastic exhibits and shows at the adjoining planetarium, too. I was at that butterfly exhibit, greencurmudgeon! Amazing.

Serendipity is the hotspot for dessert - their awesome frozen hot chocolate is what they're famous for.

They are always in such a HURRY there.

Next vaca u get, yall should definately come to Memphis,we have a street called BEALE,and I'll just have to give yall the "insiders" tour.......SOOOOOO MUCH FUN!!!!!
    1. chicky401
One of my friends turned his truck down a street in the bad part of town and a car was double parked preventing him to complete the turn. He sat for a couple minutes and a cop showed up made him hit the car (which was pretty much taking the trailer over part of car.) He was hesitant and the cop said if you do not drive forward you will get a ticket. After he hit the car the cop gave the car a ticket for double parking Not gonna mention the reason the cop gave him here though.

    U.N. tour
  24. Stillthinking
New York is such a great city for walking and the public transportation is pretty terrific.
  25. LisaNYC
If you're foolish enough to go on the Sex and the City tour, please don't leave your cupcake wrappers from Magnolia Bakery all over the sidewalk. We hate that.
    1. Stillthinking
Stupid tourists. Sex and the city tour.
    2. DollinNYC
As a matter of fact, NYC is closed! So don't even bother coming!
  26. LisaNYC
I wish that I could find the pic of hundreds of discarded cupcake wrappers in that west village neighborhood left by the tourists who visited Magnolia Bakery. Some guy posted photos on his blog.
    1. Stillthinking
That's so gross. You know they would never do that in their suburb of Wisconsin.
    2. DollinNYC
Those cupcakes aren't so great either. Where's Cooking Asshole? I'm sure he makes better cupcakes!
  27. LisaNYC
Exactly, Doll! Send them to Jersey.
