My wife and I are taking a trip to New York City next month and we're trying to decide what to do. So far, this is our list:
Statue of Liberty
Metropolitan Museum of Art
Empire State Building
Grand Central Station
Rockefeller Center
Ellis Island Immigration Museum
Staten Island Ferry
Central Park
Maybe the David Letterman Show
Any other "must see or do" in NYC?

Skip the Staton Island Ferry and take the 3 hour island cruise. It costs about 10 dollars a person and is worth every penny.
If you're going to the Empire State Building, wait until really late in the evening. During the day, the lines are horrid and you get a beautiful view in the evening.
I also suggest having at least one fine dining experience while you are in New York and do NOT skip SoHo and Greenwich Village. -
I really enjoyed little Italy and Chinatown. Don't buy a fake bag or dvd's from vendors on the street. It's really illegal and they're really poor quality.
If I can suggest a restaurant, Balthazar is fantastic for fine dining. For ice cream and dessert, Serendipity on the Upper East Side is famous for a reason. It's awesome! It's also typically a three hour wait. -
Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of Art, Guggenheim, The Jewish Museum, NY Public Library (main branch), Frick Museum, Ground Zero (if you are so inclined), Katz's deli (a must-visit famous deli on the lower east side), Peter Lugar steakhouse, Circle Line ferry tour around Manhattan......will post more later when I remember all that I left out.
Also: Brooklyn Botanical Gardens.
Once you're here, pick-up a Time Out Magazine at any newsstand for the best listings of current shows, museums, galleries, readings, cultural events, talks, etc. -
Forgot to add: you're interested in Buddhism, so you must visit the spectacular Rubin Museum in the west village:

and Tibet House:

Great suggestions Lisa- Ditto on the Time Out magazine! David Letterman show is fun! I went to a few tapings when they first moved to the Ed Sullivan theater. Write to them now and tell them you will be in town and would like tickets- you never know. They may send them and that will save you the hassle of stand-by!

I'll add more later too.. -
What are your interests? I lived there for 4 years while in school but I lean toward blues clubs and Chinatown. It really depends on where your interests are and your time frame. I lived across from Union Square Park for a couple of years, in Washington Square the first year and Soho the last year.
Metropolitan Museum of Art is a don't miss, but other than that the rest of the stuff is whatever peaks your interest. I know a lot of people find that lengthy island tours quite tedious so it depends on the individual I guess. I favor Chinatown, where believe it or not you can find some great deals...and not on the rip-offs, skip that and don't follow anyone down a back alley, you can find some deals from the vendors on a lot of things. -
Century 21 is one of the most famous shops in the city for ridiculous discounts. Check it out if you visit Ground Zero, since it's right around the corner. But it's always VERY crowded:

Must See or Do ideas from a Native New Yorker:
New York is a wonderful City to walk around in:
-Walk from the Hudson river to the East River
-Coney Island (not sure what the story is with it now but some of the old flavor might still be there)
-The Tenement Museum in the Lower east Side
-Chocolate by the Bald Man down by Union Square - if you love chocolate in just about everything and like places that remind you of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
-the Bronx Botanical Gardens
-Check out some Spoken word at the Nuyorican Poet's Cafe or the Bowery Poetry Cafe
-For Jazz go to St. Nick's up in Sugar Hill in Harlem or Small's down in the West Village (if it's still open)
-The Museum of American Folk Art
-Go see 'Joe Turner's Come and Gone' by August Wilson on Broadway if you're into heavy plays and want to have your mind blown (there are plenty of other plays if you want to see something MUCH less heavy)
-go to to the famous Sylvia's soul foud restaurant on 125th Street
-Go to spanish Harlem and eat Puerto Rican and Dominican Food
-Do a search to see when and where some street fairs might be going on
-Walk around the West Village and go to a piano bar like Arthur's tavern
-Eat at Sri Pra Phai thai restaurant in Queens
-Go to Negril's in Chelsea and the West village if you like tourist friendly Jamaican food, if you want it straight, no chaser,(and much cheaper) go to the Bronx or Brooklyn (GOOGLE SEARCH)
-Rent bikes in the West Village (Morton Street, I think) and ride way, way up along the Hudson as far as you like.
*Hurry and do as much as you can in New York because it is changing rapidly. So many old, cool things are being torn down. Enjoy yourself and remember that though parts of it have been unfairly stigmatized and misrepresented, New York is a city full of wonderful, interesting, creative people. Enjoy! -
I liked Letterman when I was younger all the time. He seems too liberal though for me now. I don't watch him anymore. But, it is good to see the guest on the show. He has some big names.
This is a great page. I think I got one other.

This part is so true. I just ignore.
New York has its share of odd people: talkative pan-handlers, lonely people just wanting a chat, people with psychological disorders, etc. If someone approaches you for a chat, do what most New Yorkers do: completely ignore them or say "Sorry, gotta go" while continuing to walk at a brisk pace. -
I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Museum of Natural History; while it's often loaded with little kids, it's good for an afternoon of personal regression. The last time I visited, they had an exhibit with tropical butterflies: one walked into a sealed room in which the butterflies were floating around, filling the air with spectacular dots of colour.
Also, Lincoln Centre is worth a visit if you can get tickets for a concert or opera (though the season is near its end, I believe). -

Ooooo.......great reminders you guys! Museum of Natural History is one of the greatest spots in towns. Fantastic exhibits and shows at the adjoining planetarium, too. I was at that butterfly exhibit, greencurmudgeon! Amazing.
Serendipity is the hotspot for dessert - their awesome frozen hot chocolate is what they're famous for. -
Trying not to get lost!!!!
was on a run with hubby,(TRUCK DRIVER)we had to call the police to LITERALLY shut broadway down,so he could get his truck turned around!!!
NEW YORK HATES US!
I don't guess your gonna have that problem SATI,but still I would take a cab everywhere,if you don't wanna get yelled at or honked at!!!!
They are always in such a HURRY there.
Next vaca u get, yall should definately come to Memphis,we have a street called BEALE,and I'll just have to give yall the "insiders" tour.......SOOOOOO MUCH FUN!!!!!-
One of my friends turned his truck down a street in the bad part of town and a car was double parked preventing him to complete the turn. He sat for a couple minutes and a cop showed up made him hit the car (which was pretty much taking the trailer over part of car.) He was hesitant and the cop said if you do not drive forward you will get a ticket. After he hit the car the cop gave the car a ticket for double parking
Not gonna mention the reason the cop gave him here though.

If you're foolish enough to go on the Sex and the City tour, please don't leave your cupcake wrappers from Magnolia Bakery all over the sidewalk. We hate that.

I wish that I could find the pic of hundreds of discarded cupcake wrappers in that west village neighborhood left by the tourists who visited Magnolia Bakery. Some guy posted photos on his blog.
