Do you think there would be any interest in it?

Many people, in real life, find it "original" that I'm male and knit so maybe it would be fun to blog about it.

I use to knit when I lived in Minnesota. I think many people would be interested. Just regarding different types of yarn and patterns. What is easy to start out doing, the difference of needles to use. How to do a gauge.

I think its a great idea.
  2. cymrusteve
my wife knits. i keep telling her she should start a blog...
  3. churchie
This would be a successful niche blog. I did a quick keyword lookup, here are the top 5 keywords from Overture.

    knitting - 95,792 searches/month
    free knitting pattern - 34,390 searches/month
    knitting pattern - 28,205 searches/month
    bag harlot knitting - 11,543 searches/month
    knitting machine - 11,362 searches/month

    There is definetly demand.
    1. Anasmum
Is there a way to tell how many knitting blogs are out there?

Barb, who accounted for a good portion of the searches for free knitting patterns...
    2. MadameX
      Technorati is tracking 3,579.
    3. Anasmum
How does that compare to, say, parenting blogs?
    4. MadameX
Surprisingly enough (to me, at least), it's pretty close. Parenting blogs are around 5,000.
  4. BamaGal
I do not knit. I crochet. But some of my male friends knit---one even spins his own yarn. I say go for it. Besides one of my favorite crochet blogs is by a guy---called crochetdude---he is even a published crochet pattern designer.
    1. Enlight
Wow, spinning his own yarn, very cool. I have always been into fabric and such things. Love all those different types of wools, cottons, silk.
  5. MadameX
I can't say I'm in FAVOR of a knitting blog. (Here's my take on the whole thing: whatswrongaroundus.blogspot.com/2007/04/so-thing-isknitting-is-ruining-worl... )

However, there are tons of very successful knitting blogs out there, and when the blog I was writing about in that post started turning toward knitting, the comments seemed to pour in.
  6. Anasmum
Finally, a topic I know something about! Woohoo!

I have a LOT of experience with knitting blogs because I had total reconstructive foot surgery and in my down time, I started knitting again. I have to tell you that every single knitter out there has a knitting blog. I think it's because they have no one at home to whom they can talk about knitting. You will STUNNED by the number of knitting blogs --and the number of really bad writers who knit. Probably the most successful of all knitting blogs is the Yarn Harlot's blog but there are other successful ones out there. There are at least two male knitters on my socknitters list with blogs but it is true that there are far fewer male knitters than female. I thought for a while about turning MY blog (more parenting/life/humor) into a knitting blog but then I decided I didn't want to be limited by one category. Your mileage may vary, of course.

Hehe, really? Didn't know that there are so many blogs about it. The ones I have seen has very poor and cluttered design.
Might not be the best idea since I'm not that good a knitter and writer (getting away with it by having a photoblog).
    2. Anasmum
Well, I didn't say they were all GOOD knitting blogs and if you have photo experience, that's the best thing of all. Here's one of my own posts on knitting --and it wasn't until I started posting about knitting that I got much response to my lonely little blog. sothethingisblog.blogspot.com/2007/05/small-socks.html

Here's the Yarn Harlot's URL--she takes great photos of her work and she's a VERY FAST knitter so that's good. She also has this schtick where she takes photos of her sock-in-progress everywhere she goes. It's pretty funny. www.yarnharlot.ca/blog/ (Her site seems to be down.)

      Here's another good blog: www.masondixonknitting.com/

See what you think--I'd be so interested in hearing your experience!

      Barb
    3. jungl
Awh, sorry to hear that Ana didn't want your socks. They look very good tho.

Those knitting blogs looked very good! Cool idea to walk around knitting and taking photos of it!
    4. Anasmum
Well, she takes them out and shows them to her friends, so she doesn't HATE them. She just won't wear them. I'm okay with that, mostly because I am knitting some for myself that are spectacular. Wanna see? Because I don't know anyone in real life who wants to see... Also from my blog: sothethingisblog.blogspot.com/2007/06/socknapped.html The picture is at the very end.

      Sock knitting is very addictive.

I think you should go for it. There truly is SO much interest out there. And I bet you can find a unique angle.

      Barb
    5. jungl
They are real nice Is that yarn that are colored to make a pattern?
Never used that kind of yarn.

I actually almost never buy yarn as I try to do it more organic by getting lots leftovers from retired knitters
    6. Anasmum
It's a handpainted sock yarn, I forget the artist --ungodly expensive but so pretty that I had a little accident with my debit card when I saw it. Not that I want you to have that sort of accident yourself but you should check out littleknits.com --they are having a sock yarn sale.

But wait --are you in Norway? Because, if so, you have probably the most beautiful yarn in the world right in your own country!
    7. jungl
      Wow, handpainted yarn? Sounds exclusive!

Never knew we had the best yarn here. Nice to hear

In my dream world I would only knit with organic yarn, but it's so hard to find and extremely expensive.
    8. healthiacynthia
Barb--Oh, your lovely daydreams about the kidnapped sock just split my sides! The sock, by the way, is very beautiful.... makes me want to get my needles out (especially since I have a grandchild on the way for the winter!)
  7. BlogCompetition
I used to knit and a couple of my kids give it a go
    1. cymrusteve
      football scarves?
    2. BlogCompetition
exactly only thing I could do and in one colour, while the boys just make them and I sell em
  8. Enlight
What is nice for us men, going to a knitting class or dance class. The class is full a women. he he he
  9. dharmagypsy7
lol... wow.. so many knitters... who knew? Jungl go for it! We regret more on things we didn't do than things we do... can you knit me a scarf?
  10. Enlight
By the way, I use to knit scarfs with a circular needle. They would come out double and just fringe the ends. Nice and warm during those Minnesota winters.
  11. VioletsVintage
Yes you should do it. Hand made things are really popular. You might want to check out www.etsy.com Its a site for only handmade items and the shops are run by the artists/crafters who make the stuff. The site is also very innovated (you need flash to really enjoy it all.)
  12. VampireFaust
Well, I don't personally knit, but I've heard that it's quite trendy these days to do so. You'd probably have a big audience...
  13. m38967
a man who knits? yes, i think that would make an interesting blog topic. and dont ever let competition scare you away. burger king started after mcdonalds, wendys started after burger king, arby's started after wendy's and so on. these are all basically burger joints, but they each found a way to differentiate themselves and are all successful. Many times they are all clustered in the same block, right?

just be different somehow. go for it.
  14. confessing7girl
OMG!!!!!! u knit!!!!!!!!!!!!!! a guy knitting!!!!!!!!! that would be like an oasis in the desert!!!!! ahhhhhhh that would be soo original........ u knit!!!!!!!!!!!!!! actually i do visit knitting blogs mostly in my own language since i dont really know any good ones in english... i made a bag for myself from things i read and got ideas from!!!!!! im not a knitting freak... only if i hv nothing else to do but its quite relaxing sometimesss
  15. shiningwaters
Knitting is a key to relaxation and my inner self for me. Right now I'm knitting 60 inches of cloth so I can turn it into a poncho. It is made out of light green linen using what is called a baby cable stitch. I've got about 8 inches to go.
  16. jungl
Ok, you have all convinced me. Gonna start a knitting blog!
Was trekking in the forest today with my beloved camera and got some ideas for the blog.

Now I just have to find a wordpress theme. So hard to decide! Any suggestions would be welcome

dharma: I have actually never knitted a scarf. I mainly make beanies/hats, socks and wrist warmers.
  17. clioandme
Can't say that I would read it, but I'll bet you're on to something. I clicked on this thread not because of the question, but because of the combination of question with bearded guy in photo.
    1. MadameX
So then, if you do it, make sure to publicize with your photo attached...
    2. jungl
Lol, I will maximize my use of pictures like that
  18. ndpthepoetress
For sure there is a vast interest in this area! Vera may be glad to help you because she has been doing this type of blogging and networking about knitting... for awhile. vhanna26.typepad.com/verascraftyblog/. Just tell her Jeane from Binding Ink sent you! Good Luck!
  19. sexyinred
I never knit...never went to any knitting blog before...but i'm reallty impressed that a guy could knit like jungl and enlight...:)

So...I hope you will go for it...you never knew what will happened till you had at least try it...and jungl do let us know once your blog is ready would love to have a peek on it.

    All the best!
  20. Anniepooh
There's a guy at Family.com who blogs about knitting, he also has another blog about it, he's single, knits, loves it, writes about it! I don't see why you shouldn't!

    family.go.com/blog/sweaterhead

    www.brooklyntweed.net/
    1. jungl
He got a really nice design!
  21. Witchywife
Since it takes so long to complete a knitting project, it will be interesting to see what you come up with to post about. "I dropped a stitch"...."How to make a cable pattern".... "Darning 101".... or how about "Knit a toilet seat cover!".... I'd read that.
  22. gosmelltheflowers
You should do this for sure and call it a stitch in time....it'll open up the world of podcasting to you - knitting to music perhaps? Hhhhmmm.
  23. keystoattainment
It would be great if you started a knitting blog. Kaffe Fassett is one of my hero's and a wonderful role model. I would read it with pleasure.
  24. jungl
After all these comments I will definitely make it! I have actually been surfing around on wordpress themes for the last hours, but didn't find the perfect one yet.

Had to take a break and posted this picture on my photoblog: blog.thomaslaupstad.com/2007/06/16/photo-of-midnight-sunset-and-some-amazin...
    Was a really nice sight!
  25. RecycleCindy
I too have seen Crochet Dude's aka Drew Emborsky website thecrochetdude.blogspot.com/ and done a few of his free patterns thecrochetdudepatterns.blogspot.com/. There are many men who crochet and knit so I think your idea of a knitting blog is a very good one. I have a recycled craft website blog. One thing that I think is key is free patterns and great ideas. I really enjoy my blog and have found it to be very rewarding both personally and financially.
  26. Bricore
Go for it. I love knitting..
Have you seen Real Men Knit?

Hey, what about loom knitting? It's growing and we'd love to have some men that do it as well.

    Dora Renee' Wilkerson

    p.s.
Loom knitting is pretty easy to pick up and it's fun to do.
  27. clioandme
Well, I suppose when the weather turns and Jungl is not fishing, maybe we will see this thing, though I'm looking forward to a personal blog too.

jungl, can you handle the pressure?
    1. jungl
A personal blog is more likely. Will probably make one on my main domain.

I'm a little concerned that I will be the only reader. Who reads personal blogs anyway as the topics will vary a lot.
  28. crpitt
Do you really like to knit?
  29. jpearce
I've seen some good knitting blogs. I'm a crocheter myself but do it if you really like to knit and want to blog about it. Make that your niche that your a man who knits.
  30. Norski
A knitting blog? I'm not sure that the question is so much how interested others are, as how interested you are.

As to whether it's sex-role-appropriate: I'm not sure how important that is, either.

But maybe you shouldn't be listening to me. I'm an old-fashioned Catholic whose father-in-law was unphased when an agitated school counselor, back in the seventies or eighties, asked him if he knew that one of his daughters wanted to take shop. His response was "so? let her!" And, one of my brothers-in-law took home ec. No fool, he: He was the only boy in the classroom.

The point: somebody's going to make cracks if you blog on knitting. But that's their problem.
  31. Norski
And then I look at the date on the discussion-starter. I thought this looked familiar!
  32. Norski
Hey, how's the knitting blog going?
    1. jungl
Slow, my last sock looked really bad
    2. crpitt
      sorry to hear that!
    3. jungl
Gonna start on another one today with different design..
  33. crpitt
A blog catalog pair of socks?
  34. RecycleCindy
    jungl,
Don't feel bad. I can't make decent socks either. May I suggest knitting a scarf or hat? I believe you will find it much easier. You could start out your blog by talking about how you got started with your socks and other projects. Just an idea to help you launch your knitting blog.
    1. jungl
I have made lots of socks so I don't find it very difficult.
I was trying out a new design that I had made up in my head. Didn't work out.
  35. Stinkypaw
Sure why not! There are lots of knotting blogs out there but I haven't seen many by men... good luck with that and keep on knitting!
  36. stephw916
I think it's a great idea. =) If you do start one, drop me a line. I'll come over and take a peek.
    I have a knitting blog: theadventuresofknitpearl.blogspot.com
And here's a pretty well known, and enjoyable to read knitting blog that's written by a guy: brooklyntweed.blogspot.com/
  37. Bricore
Did you decided to do a knitting blog?

If, knitting with needles doesn't work for you TRY some looms. It's easy to do (my 8 year old can make tube socks!) There are some wonderful sites with really great videos that would help you out too.

Can you tell I like loom knitting?

    Dora Renee' Wilkerson
  38. jungl
Hehe, this thread keep popping up.

I haven't been knitting much lately so would be hard to write about it. The blog is on hold like many of my other blogging ideas.

Never heard of loom knitting before. Looks interesting!
But I love my needles and I don't have any trouble with them. I only have trouble when the designs in my head doesn't turn out good in practice.
  39. cymrusteve
come on thomas, you really need to start this knitting blog. i'm sure my wife would be a regular visitor...
  40. EelKat
I read several crochet blogs and a dozen or so crafty blogs, because I used to crochet and still do crafts; never took up knitting so I never searched for knitting blogs, but I'll bet anyone who knits and reads blog would love it!
  41. Bricore
Hey, how's the knitting going? Did you think we'd forget about this one? I hope your socks turned out better for you. Let me know once you get the site up. I'll bookmark you and check in from time to time.

    Dora Renee' Wilkerson
