I have eaten
the plums
that were in
the icebox
and which
you were probably
saving
for breakfast
Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold
This is a very famous poem by William Carlos Williams. I was listening to NPR "This American Life" and the subject was "Mistakes Were Made". The segments were about apologies that were not really apologetic. Like when you say you're sorry, but actually, it's just empty words.
My favorite segment involves this poem. Turns out, this poem is famous for parodies. Lots of people have written their own versions of this poem, including school children across the country.
Here is my version:

I bought new
shoes with rent
money today
Which you were
probably saving
for next month
Forgive me
They are beautiful.
So shiny, red and tall.
