A laundromat in my area was robbed 3 times in 4 days!!! The first time thieves broke in and stole $25 from a Pepsi machine. The 2'nd time, they stole 4 OLD computers. The 3'rd time, the owner left to buy a new computer, and the thieves broke in and stole another computer. Finally the guy ended up having to spend the night outside his store to guard it.
The recession has really hit my area hard. This area used to not have much crime, but now I don't feel safe any more. It seems no one has a job. There is a gang of white teens roaming the city robbing people in broad daylight with people around as well.
Also, I had some jewelry stolen recently by a carpet cleaning service.
Has anyone else noticed an increase of crime in your area?

my employee stole a diamond ring (a small diamond chip + 14k gold, so no biggie) from my station not too long ago. but it's all good. the $ she makes me makes up for it.

Yes but it our polce that are doing it. (In Town) I have had a decrease here because my neighbor moved to Texas. They probably had a considerable increase. But yes it isup every where. No one has jobs and the government is not helping out at all in this.

yes she stole from my kids piggy banks ($400 from my 5 year old over time and in change) and food from us while I was taking care of her kids. She stole my dog and sold him (a bull mastiff mix) and the list goes on and on. She is on parloe for false idienty and shop lifting, has $4000 in bad checks waiting here for her when she returns, and is bad n drugs

yeah he was only 2 at the time. It was one of those really large piggy banks full of change people gave him. She broke in alot until I got an alarm system that will make you puke and hit the floor when it goes off. It wakes the dead when it goes off. No one has bothered to break in since then. I know it was her because before she left to go to jail here she returned my key on my counter in the kitchen. I let her in to get info on how to reach her mom to come get her kids. I turned around and the key was on the counter. She was a nightmare. She use to hook up her phine and internet to my outside phone box until we locked it too.

"I have always believed that the best security for property, be it much or little, is to remove from every part of the community, as far as can possibly be done, every cause of complaint, and every motive to violence" -- Thomas Paine; 'Dissertations on First Principles of Government' (1795)

Yes, crime is up here. Especially since the value of metal recycling has remained high while unemployment has been rising. So, people are grabbing anything they can to take to the metal recyclers. Some people can make a couple hundred bucks a day from recycling metal from dumpsters across the city.
So, the illegal version of this is to steal the gutters off people's houses, and some even strip the aluminum siding off houses. Bikes get stolen like crazy. I can see the trucks cruising around the city filled to overflowing with stuff taken from dumpsters or stolen. The city has taken to securing manhole covers because they were getting stolen.-
It's like that here too. Catalytic converters off cars are a popular item too. A guy in this area came home one day and started getting a head ache. He finally figured out that gas was coming from his crawl space and realized that someone had gotten under his house and stolen his gas pipes. The house could have blown up or poisoned him.

I have people begging to come get scrap metal from here. We have dozer piles of it. It was pushed up before we bought the house in theback field. You would be really suprised at the number of people walking up and down the road picking up cans. We have them burning down empty houses here and then cleaning the metal up out of it. But here if you have somuch copper you have to have paper work to back it up same with old car bodies they have cracked down at the metal yards here.

Crime of all sorts is up in my area. We are up to 13 murders so far this year - compared to maybe four a year. Petty crime - convenience store robberies, house break-ins, shoplifting and purse-snatching is also on the rise. My father now carries a concealed weapon because he sees too many desperate people who look high - and he knows they could be armed so he might as well be armed as well.
The economy has definitely taken its toll. In my charming neighborhood, we had a terrible triple murder. A man, obviously crazy and distraught over his divorce from his wife (he wrote a letter quoting an awful lot of religion - glad he's going to Hell)...he shot and killed her mother and then slit the throats of their two young children because it was the best alternative to them being raised in a broken home.
We've had shootings outside of bars, postal carriers mugged, metal ripped out of homes for scrap sales, etc.... uuuggggggghhhhhhh -
Here in New York City, crime, aside from a few hot spots, is surprisingly down. A lot of people don't believe the figures, but everyone agrees the city is a lot safer now.
When I first moved here many years ago when drug usage was off the wall, my apartment was broken into twice. The second time I was away for the weekend and when I returned Sunday, I walked up the stairs and saw that my apartment door had been transformed into a dutch door. The top half was closed and still attached to the wall, but the bottom half was missing. Pried off, it was lying on the hall floor.
The building owner now keeps both front doors locked, which is against fire regulations, but since then, no one has been burglarized. Although not for lack of trying - 2 enterprising thieves did manage to get inside, but they were chased away before they could commit further mayhem. -
I've just got my pair of sandals changed with the older when I helped my girlfriend bring her stuffs from her dorm to her new boarding house. LOL

There's been more car thefts and breakins in our town lately. The local police are warning not to get out of car if backing out of driveway and see a cash receipt on the back window .. it's probably a setup.
A few years back my car was broken into and my stereo stolen, including half the dashboard to get it. After I got a replacement stereo and remove the face each day, my car was broken in again within 2 weeks and because there were no stereo in there, damage to my dashboard again and steering wheel. (and smashed sidedoor windows)
Although I've got that theft deterrent starter block (won't start unless you have a part that's on my keychain) I now keep my car doors unlocked and leave a few loonies and loose change in the cupholder. Once, someone did come into my car and take the change, and I never left money in there for a while, but he came back and left my door open and I had a dead battery in the morning - but, that was it.
