Discussions

I'm currently using Blogger. I've heard discussion that having a 3 panel template is best, however, I like the clean look of my 2 panel. It it gives the reader a better impression I'd change it.

What's the pulse on this one?

I've had both, and three panels, though I'm sure I'll have one again, are too overwhelming for my taste. I am more likely to read a two panel if it is a blog I haven't seen before, because the content is more clearly highlighted.

I have had up to 4 columns or just use a magazine style, would you go for 1 coloumn either side or 2 on one side

Two panel. Less distractions. More white space allows the content to be the focus. I only have one panel!

Three looks more balanced and polished, for some reason. Aesthetically pleasing.

I like 2 ... I am a widget freak, but 3 columns just make the space with your blog content too small. Not sure why people want 2 columns of side bar stuff. The content is the most important ... so I say give it more space. But it's all personal. It's your blog...whatever you prefer works best.

I agree with DrowseyMonkey that 3 columns makes the room for the content too small - if everyone moves to widescreen monitors, I may change my mind. But I think it really depends on how much side bar stuff you have - if you find that the side bar is double the length of your posts then you may need three panels.

Two for me. Three for you if you like!

I am using 2 - simply because of the blog template that I chose. I've come to realize that it does look neater and cleaner than 3.

    I'm glad there's a consensus. lol

Unless I decide to start selling ads (not likely), I'll stay with two.

I find it hard to read 3-column blogs too. A lot of what goes in those columns, such as blogrolls, could go on a separate page. Besides the busy factor that obscures the text, there's that thing about having too much choice and so choosing nothing at all. Any of you had that experience when shopping?

You know - Jenda Starbrook uses a 3 or 4 column format for her Moxie blog. I think for some purposes it has a nice look. For writing - and a lot of it though - I still like the 2 column. Focus then is on the reading and writing aspects. Maybe itdepends on your purpose

      Yep. I think you're right.

I agree. I think the 3 column is not good for writing.

3 Panel is better if you are selling a product or plan to do a lot of advertising. It allows you to cram in a lot more widgets and advertisements into a sight than 2 panels. If your blog is commercially oriented; you want to make money 3 panel allows a lot more widgets and thingies.

However, if you are trying to come across with a message, or are trying to do something newsworthy, two panel is a lot easier to read.

I've done two and three and I like three better so far. Two was too little and looked sparse. Three seems to work well without overpowering.

Two panels, definitely. Three makes me feel claustrophobic. Haven't seen many 3's that haven't made me feel that way. Anyway, just a personal choice - Nards

I went with a 2 column theme this time, but I have seen a few 3 column themes that have the content in the center and the other two columns on either side, and as long as there is good spacing between them, I find it easy to read the main content in the centre without being distracted by the outer columns, does that make sense? It's always your personal preference in the end though :o)

Three. I get my best numbers from three column themes. Ofcourse, that's just the start. It's not really how many columns you have, but how you use them.
