Actually, I think too many people overlook the value of quality blog content, and the value of thinking like their audience, and perseverance.
Certainly not everyone is guilty of this, but a lot of us are just building blogs for ads, "splogs". Search engines are already figuring out ways to dump these pages.
The good news is that it makes blogs with a purpose jump out in the light all that much more.
Without quality and/or entertaining content, SEO and SN really won't do much.
If people get to your site and their's nothing there they like, your always going to be fighting for fresh market share as you lose repeat business.
On the other hand, if you have useful quality content, and build a foundation of solid links, laced with well thought out comments you leave on other people's blogs, then the SEO and SN work will have an almost magical way of making itself much more useful.
Give something first in other words.
Just a few old school thoughts for what they're worth, but they're principles that work.
