Just testing the waters... I'd love to hear some of your favorite bands (don't worry, I won't be critical lol). I'll post mine a little later if the discussion lasts that long.

Not Rock
----------
Oregon
Strunz and Farah
David Grisman Quintet
Gary Burton Quartet
King Sunny Ade and His African Beats
Rock
-------
08001
Steely Dan (all incarnations)
Poco
China Crisis
Led Zeppelin
I had to add the two categories because it would not make much sense otherwise-
Steely Dan are very famous, the core was Walter Becker and Donald Fagen and awesome session musicians. Check out the opening guitar line by Larry Carlton on Don't Take me Alive
08001, are a Barcelona based band, very interesting. Thee's about 20 or so in the band on and off.
Poco, Country Rock. Tim B Schmit eventually joined the eagles. Black and Gray is very good, tremendous slide guitar and harmony. It's pretty old now. Head Over Heels is probably the benchmark for all Country Rock Albums
China Crisis, 80's slight synth pop, very melodic. Different Shapes a Passive Rhythms was Good. Eventually Becker from the Dan (Steely) joined them for one album
Led Zeppelin, I like number 3 -
Oregon were very well trained jazz musicians who were recorded in Europe ( excluding Vanguard) . In a way they took contemporary jazz to a new audience. Very musical at times and at others maybe too dissonant.
Strunz is an Argentinian Guitarist and Farah is from Iran, beautiful acoustic guitar shredding
David Grisman ( Dawg Music) Contemporay Bluegrass mixed with jazz thinking
Gary Burton, vibraphone player, great jazz band (modern)
King Sunny Ade is Nigerian music -
I have seen both Poco and Led Zeppelin live. However good you think their recordings are, they are infinitely better live!
I saw Zep just before III was released and they played some stuff from it as a kind of teaser. I was at the door of the music store, waiting for it to open, on the day the album was released.

These are what I am listening to the most at the moment.-
I have only started listening to the Yeah yeah yeahs of late, but love them. Heads will roll and skeletons get stuck on repeat.

(and i would put some more
) -
1. Marillion
2. Queensryche
3. Miles Davis Quartet (First)
4. The Beatles
5. Godspeed You! Black Emperor
And solo artists:
1. Kate Bush
2. George Harrison
3. Elvis
4. Leonard Cohen
5. Ella Fitzgerald-
Both. But they're completely different beasts.
I've seen all tours since Fugazi in 1984, so I guess I'm a long-term fan, but I think they became a better band after the great man's departure. Not a popular point of view at the time, but my opinion all the same. We've had some wobbles in recent years (I find .com/Engine/Radiation hard to listen to) but the most recent material is pretty solid.
Favourite h-Era: Afraid of Sunlight remains peerless.
Favourite Fish-Era: My Clutching at Straws still gets plenty of play time.
-
1) Bob Marley and the Wailers
2) The Doors
3) The Yeah Yeah Yeahs
4) Cream
5) The White Stipes (I'm sure it's debatable, but I'm totally in love with them, so bonk off) -
Led Zeppelin
Queen
The Beatles
The Who
Cream
and I am almost 22 years old.. I was clearly born in the wrong decade
-
I agree..
What I meant was that, if only I was born in that time, I could have discovered their music and grown up with it..
And the best thing about these bands(especially Zepp, Queen and The Who) was their live acts which I will never be able to witness in person
and DVD's don't do justice
Unless Percy shows us Mercy with a Led Zepp reunion

I'm not laughing. Howling, maybe, but not laughing. [wipes a tear] I can't decide if I should run out and find Dead Harpoon or run away. No one should be surprised that there are fans of pop bands out there, but I've never heard of this one. I'm scared but intrigued. Nicely done - they're probably a death metal band that makes Manowar look calm.
-
-
I can't believe no one has put the Eagles on their list.
I guess what's really sad is there is a bunch of the above bands that I don't even know.
-
I agree the eagles were great, Joe Walsh is one of my favorite guitarists. And there's nothing sad about not knowing bands... there's so much music out there its hard to keep up with it all. Just take it as an opportunity to start listening to some the bands mentioned, I'm sure you'll find some you like.

Oingo Boingo
They Might Be Giants
Taj Mahal
WookieFoot
The Clash
That varies from day to day, but these are the folks from whom I have the most music and that have the largest number of songs to which I listen again and again. You could substitute Southern Culture on the Skids for WookieFoot, I suppose, or Keb' Mo' or The Connells. Many bands I end up with one or two songs that I really love and the rest of the albums lay languishing in my library. Tower of Power has done some fantastic work over the years, for instance, but the percentage isn't quite high enough for them to make this list. -
The Monkeeys
GodSmack
BonJovi
Metillaca-until they did the internet music thing
Guns and Roses
Rascall Flatts- the only country band I like and going to see them in Atlanta next weekend -
1. Ben Folds (Five)
2. Blur
3. The Monkees
4. The Shins
5. Flight of the Conchords
The last one shouldn't count, but I'm addicted.
