Just testing the waters... I'd love to hear some of your favorite bands (don't worry, I won't be critical lol). I'll post mine a little later if the discussion lasts that long.

  1. Rory
    1. Marillion
    2. Alan Parson's Project
    3. Rush
    4. Styx
    5. The Tragically Hip

    ... somewhat diverse-ish.
    1. Talkmusic
Yeah, that is really diverse. I could never get into Rush, but I really respect their musicianship, some great talent in that band.
    2. acousticguitarist
the parson's project was interesting, very good production.. It was never a real band though was it?
    3. Rory
Parson's toured and was real. Each album had a different lead singer though.

Rush is THE power 3-man band - one of the greatest bassist ever in Geddy Lee and probably THE greatest drummer ever in Neil Peart.
    4. acousticguitarist
      thanks Rory, appreciated
  2. Sam1982
    1.Slipknot
    2.System of a down
    3.Disturbed
    4.Metallica
    5.Fear Factory
    1. acousticguitarist
Have slipknot done any acoustic tracks? People tell me they can PLAY
    2. Rory
Metallica ... one GREAT album "Metallica" and that's about it. IMHO. Classic, CLASSIC songs came out of that album.
    3. Sam1982
Yeah the band Stonesour is pretty much Slipknots alter ego without the masks.

But yes they do have a few acoustic tracks. There is an acoutsic version of their song Vermillion which is really good.
  3. acousticguitarist
    Not Rock
    ----------
    Oregon
    Strunz and Farah
    David Grisman Quintet
    Gary Burton Quartet
King Sunny Ade and His African Beats

    Rock
    -------
    08001
    Steely Dan (all incarnations)
    Poco
    China Crisis
    Led Zeppelin

I had to add the two categories because it would not make much sense otherwise
    1. Talkmusic
haha it's totally fine, i will def have to check some of them out. I've only heard of Zeppelin...
    2. Rory
Ya, you can't go wrong with Zeppelin. Steely Dan has some damn good songs, but I can't handle a whole album of their music.
    3. acousticguitarist
Steely Dan are very famous, the core was Walter Becker and Donald Fagen and awesome session musicians. Check out the opening guitar line by Larry Carlton on Don't Take me Alive

08001, are a Barcelona based band, very interesting. Thee's about 20 or so in the band on and off.

Poco, Country Rock. Tim B Schmit eventually joined the eagles. Black and Gray is very good, tremendous slide guitar and harmony. It's pretty old now. Head Over Heels is probably the benchmark for all Country Rock Albums

China Crisis, 80's slight synth pop, very melodic. Different Shapes a Passive Rhythms was Good. Eventually Becker from the Dan (Steely) joined them for one album

Led Zeppelin, I like number 3
    4. acousticguitarist
Rory, I can because the guitar parts are unbelievably good. Thjey had a who's who. Carlton, Khan, Denny Dias, Skunk Baxter etc
    5. acousticguitarist
Oregon were very well trained jazz musicians who were recorded in Europe ( excluding Vanguard) . In a way they took contemporary jazz to a new audience. Very musical at times and at others maybe too dissonant.

Strunz is an Argentinian Guitarist and Farah is from Iran, beautiful acoustic guitar shredding

David Grisman ( Dawg Music) Contemporay Bluegrass mixed with jazz thinking

Gary Burton, vibraphone player, great jazz band (modern)

King Sunny Ade is Nigerian music
    6. Rory
I fully understand your criteron ... can't blame you on that one!!
    7. celticmusicfan
I have China Crisis albums. I love the music.
    8. SweetViolet
I have seen both Poco and Led Zeppelin live. However good you think their recordings are, they are infinitely better live!

I saw Zep just before III was released and they played some stuff from it as a kind of teaser. I was at the door of the music store, waiting for it to open, on the day the album was released.

If I was to step totally outside my Classic Rock comfort zone and mentioned "recent" groups, I'd have to say:

    1. Green Day
    2. Cold Play
    3. Evanesence
    4. Tool
    5. Daughtry

Belle and Sebastian I love. The Decemberists-- I'm still trying to digest their newest, rock-opera-fabulous album. I feel like I need to listen in order, but it's good, like the Secret Machines album.

    4. The Beatles
    5. Godspeed You! Black Emperor

    And solo artists:

    1. Kate Bush
    2. George Harrison
    3. Elvis
    4. Leonard Cohen
    5. Ella Fitzgerald
    1. Rory
Nice! Someone else that's a Marillion fan!! Fish only albums? Or, all of them?
    2. IndigoWrath
Both. But they're completely different beasts.

I've seen all tours since Fugazi in 1984, so I guess I'm a long-term fan, but I think they became a better band after the great man's departure. Not a popular point of view at the time, but my opinion all the same. We've had some wobbles in recent years (I find .com/Engine/Radiation hard to listen to) but the most recent material is pretty solid.

Favourite h-Era: Afraid of Sunlight remains peerless.

Favourite Fish-Era: My Clutching at Straws still gets plenty of play time.
    3. drjay1966
Don't you mean the Miles Davis Quintet?
  24. lotusb
    1) Bob Marley and the Wailers
    2) The Doors
    3) The Yeah Yeah Yeahs
    4) Cream
    5) The White Stipes (I'm sure it's debatable, but I'm totally in love with them, so bonk off)
    1. Talkmusic
haha nice, i love the white stripes, you listen to Raconteurs as well?
    2. ismsandologies
      Raconteurs! Digged 'em!
  25. dosox
    Coldplay
    U2
    Tryad
    Keane
    White Stripes

    Nothing more
  26. dsriharsha
    Led Zeppelin
    Queen
    The Beatles
    The Who
    Cream

and I am almost 22 years old.. I was clearly born in the wrong decade
    1. lotusb
Music, real music, isn't meant to be gated by each decade or generation. True music lovers don't limit themselves to the music produced within their lifetime only. 22 or not, nothing wrong with loving good music. I'm 25 and most of the bands I named are from my parent's era.
    2. dsriharsha
      I agree..
What I meant was that, if only I was born in that time, I could have discovered their music and grown up with it..
And the best thing about these bands(especially Zepp, Queen and The Who) was their live acts which I will never be able to witness in person
      and DVD's don't do justice

Unless Percy shows us Mercy with a Led Zepp reunion
  27. datefruit
    Boston,
    Creedence,
    Nazareth,
    Queen,
    Slade
    1. Talkmusic

    2. Bon Jovi
    3. Guns 'n' Roses
    4. Iron Maiden
    5. The Mission UK
  29. F4wrdthnkndad
Since you promised not to laugh: Wham, Hanson,The dead harpoons, 5th dimension, and Aerosmith.
    1. legbamel
I'm not laughing. Howling, maybe, but not laughing. [wipes a tear] I can't decide if I should run out and find Dead Harpoon or run away. No one should be surprised that there are fans of pop bands out there, but I've never heard of this one. I'm scared but intrigued. Nicely done - they're probably a death metal band that makes Manowar look calm.
  30. Bricore
I can't believe no one has put the Eagles on their list.

I guess what's really sad is there is a bunch of the above bands that I don't even know.
    1. Talkmusic
I agree the eagles were great, Joe Walsh is one of my favorite guitarists. And there's nothing sad about not knowing bands... there's so much music out there its hard to keep up with it all. Just take it as an opportunity to start listening to some the bands mentioned, I'm sure you'll find some you like.
  31. celticmusicfan
Enya(as opposed to being a solo project it's actually a trio composed of Eithnne,Roma Ryan and Nicky Ryan the producer)
    Dead Can Dance
    Cocteau Twins
    The Sundays
    October Project
  32. legbamel
    Oingo Boingo
    They Might Be Giants
    Taj Mahal
    WookieFoot
    The Clash

That varies from day to day, but these are the folks from whom I have the most music and that have the largest number of songs to which I listen again and again. You could substitute Southern Culture on the Skids for WookieFoot, I suppose, or Keb' Mo' or The Connells. Many bands I end up with one or two songs that I really love and the rest of the albums lay languishing in my library. Tower of Power has done some fantastic work over the years, for instance, but the percentage isn't quite high enough for them to make this list.
    1. ismsandologies
      Loves me some TMBG!
  33. Talkmusic
Taj Mahal... nice pick! I unfortunately haven't really gotten around to listening to a lot of his material, but I would love to.

    1. amybyrd21
Oh I forgot the dead milkmen
    2. legbamel
I used to be known as Punk Rock Girl among my more-conservative circle of frends, many years ago, although I've never had someone at a record store not know who Mojo Nixon was nor have I stolen a car. I did listen to The Dead Milkman a lot, though.
  37. ismsandologies
    1. Ben Folds (Five)
    2. Blur
    3. The Monkees
    4. The Shins
    5. Flight of the Conchords

The last one shouldn't count, but I'm addicted.
    1. Sam1982
Whoo hoo a vote for the Conchords boys!!
    2. carsonfb
Shoot, I forgot to list Flight of the Concords. I hope they don't have hurt feelings.
