I opted for self publishing. It is a bit more tedious and lacks the exposure impact of paying for publishing but with a little leg work you can get results. There are drawbacks to Lulu.com but that is who I used. Relatively easy to publish there but the system is not efficient and many tweaks need to be worked out. Also, response to inquiries are almost nonexistent. If you self publish it will save money, cost you more personal time and could lack exposure. It can however, be a great way to get started and spread your book around a bit then submit to a larger publisher. I would also check out book surge.
