I found youtube to be a great source of traffic. In my case by reviewing a rare cellphone that I noticed had no REAL youtube reviews. My video probably averages about 1,000 views a week and a large portion of those viewers trickle down to my main website to see what all the fuss is about. I found it to be highly effective for me as a new blog.

umm, nice stuff, i did put up a guitar video and a link to my "personal-music" blog (which requires a much needed revamp) on break.com, got around 1700 plays and some traffic. Think i should do a "smartwealthyrich" video and put it on youtube
  3. syafthegeek
It's no use having a high pr but not a lot of traffic. I'm really struggling with traffic actually.
  4. jphillips
what page rank do you have?
  5. syafthegeek
None. Heheh but my alexa ranking is 670,560
  6. jphillips
cool, well gotta say community sites like blogcatalog are awesome to get traffic to a blog (provided the content on the blog is relevant to the friends you add and to the neighbourhoods you join)

  7. NINE
Syaf, which blog are you talking about specifically? You have 3 blogs, I wasn't sure which one you are talking about.
  8. syafthegeek
well the first one that i've added. SyafTheGeek.com, the other 2 don't have any traffic yet. But i've added them in BlogSoldiers for some traffic
    1. kathiemt
      What's BlogSoldier syafthegeek?
  9. jphillips
Hey one of my blogs is PR1! how nice! maybe it's time i do something with it
  10. jphillips
    is blogsoldier good so far?
  11. syafthegeek
well just for a certain period of time only. I don't know how it can generate tons of traffic
  12. jphillips
    community sites!
and a post on diggs' frontpage can also help a lot to kickstart traffic
  13. NINE
Well the idea is that you visit this website, post interesting new threads and make intelligent replies and people will naturally click your avatar to see what this guy is all about and then from there, hopefully your writing/content will keep visitors coming back day after day.

This is why I love BlogCatalog!
  14. syafthegeek
Oic, well I need to work on comment on other people's blog then.
  15. thegoodknife
trackback links in your blog posts are also a great way to generate traffic and loyal visitors.

deep linking to older blog posts helps too (some blogs have gems in their archives that don't have any comments), try to link to other blogs as often as you can (make it relevant), people do check their stats and will notice the linkback and most likely visit your blog
  18. scorpy01
Joining the DoFollow meme has jumped my traffic more than everything else combined. It's been phenomenal.
    1. kiltak
I'm having trouble understanding why enabling "do follow" would increase your traffic.. It will increase the comments on your blog, but not the traffic...

Oh, one thing that will REALLY get your readers to comment is to install the "Top Commentators" plugin in wordpress... A good example of this is on JohnChow.com... The guy has so many people commenting on his blog that its making me sick
    2. jphillips
You're right bro, but i did see an increae of traffic (maybe not related directly to the fact i enabled dofollow) but there are many "dofollowers" lists people are linking to, and my seems to appear on a lot of them, so more links back and some traffic too, but it kinda died off, since everyone is jumping aboard the technirati fave train and the mubloglog fave thing (whicch i think is not really nice, since it's like "cheating the system") well there are others ways of getting trafffic anyway
    3. punditman
      Hello all,

I don't even know what a meme is, let along a DoFollow Meme. I am using Blogger. How do I enable this?
    4. lyndonmaxewell
A meme is an idea, question, statement or project that is posted in one blog and answered to in many other blogs. Memes are used to propagate ideas in the blogosphere. Some blogs or web sites post memes on a daily, weekly, fortnightly or monthly basis.
  19. jphillips
It helped me a lot too, enabling doffollow helped increase the number of comments and feedback from my readers, just gotta watch the spam, but appart from that it's win-win
  20. ChurchOfIntegrity
Could you elaborate on the DoFollow meme. Did you change links from being nofollow to the opposite in your comments on your blogs?

Personally I'm using these blog social sites to promote my website. Blogcatalog has been the best site so far for me. I've also added myself to various blog directories but I don't feel I'm getting much traffic from them.
  21. sherbert
Thanks everyone for your tips. I've just joined, but so far am impressed with the calibre of people here at BlogCatalog. These discussions are really helpful. Now, I'm going to follow scorpy01's advice and check out the DoFollow meme....
    Cheers!
  22. jphillips
Hi Sherbert, welcome to the forums
  23. scottalk
I have never heard of DoFollow so I am totally loving these discussions (thanks blogcatalog). The best thing so far that I have seen increase my traffic is StmbleUpon. I got stumbled and my blog, ScottPot, had like over 300 readers for like 4 days. Wallhogs got stumbled, too but, it only went up to like 60 readers for one day. Now, if only I could get the Wallhogs and ScottPot traffic to increase and maintain. I guess these discussions will never end for me. Thanks guys (and gals) this is the stuff dreams are made of!
  24. Antbag
I've been using the DoFollow plugin since people first started posting about it. I never did write a post about it or put the badge on my site, but maybe I should have.......
  25. scottalk
Don't feel bad, Antbag, I still don't know what DoFollow is.
    1. kathiemt
Blogs by default have built in the 'nofollow' code so that search engines won't follow the URL links added by those leaving comments on blogs. This was an attempt at preventing spam commenters benefitting from pasting heaps of links in comments. But many of us use plugins like Akismet that arrests most of the spam comments so in effect, it means that those leaving comments are really being penalised. Whilst visitors can click on a link on a comment and go to a fellow blogger's site, the search engines won't pick up the URL reference at all. There's currently a wave of 'dofollow' on many blogs, another plugin that can be installed that allows URLs to be followed by search engines. The default setting is 0 days after the comment is posted, I've changed my setting to 2 days, just in case a spammer gets in, which is highly unlikely.

You can find out more about it at soho-life.com/blog/2007/04/27/nofollow-link-for-comments/
  26. jphillips
    hey antbag and scottalk!

of course i don't mean to spam or anything, but this post might be relevant to what you guyz are wondering

  30. MomtoAnother
Our blog www.kidsbeddingblog.com has video links to youtube.com and other "like sites" we have had our site listed in directories (like this one) and have a few regulars...Need to build more but haven't a clue where to start...REALLY want a ROAD MAP or checklist to follow.

Came across this at Yahoo! Answers. I don't vouch for any of this, but figured it might interesting reading and allow for comments from members who know better:

QUESTION: How do I get traffic for my site?

BEST ANSWER: Best Answer - Chosen by Asker

Getting traffic to your site requires a lot of work and patience.
One of the things you can do is to get an account at squidoo and write an article about a subject on your site and submit it to them. They call them lens. You can also answer questions at Yahoo answers and put a link to your blog in the source box. Get on some forums and answer some questions or interact on them for awhile, then put your link to your blog in the signature box for your forum replies or questions. Write articles and submit them to article directories with a link to your blog in the resource box. If you can't write then outsource the writing. Join a link exchange program such as link metro and get as many backlinks to your blog as possible. Get into some of the social networks such as Myspace, get lots of friends and suggest they visit your blog. Check out stumbleupon. You could also use some of the minor search engines and purchase ppc (payperclick) traffic for your blog.

SECOND BEST ANSWER (Chosen by me!):

    1. Create great content – everything starts with great content.

    2. Update the content regularly – make your visitors come back again and again to your blog by providing daily updates (even multiple posts per day!)

    3. Submit your blog to blog directories – use

Buying Traffic is the worst option. Usually traffic that is purchased is less than 30 seconds and your site is only visited because of traffic exchange points like at Blog Explosion. My largest traffic provider is Search Engines and I'd always try to get your blog seo friendly first. Buying Ads and Links helps with that and commenting and joining places like BlogCatalog is a plus as well.
  34. crkian
I agree with the yahoo questions one I have had a lot of traffic from there, answer questions in a section that is relevent to your site and have a little sig leading back to your site.
  35. crkian
Anychance of this thread being a sticky I can see a lot of new bloggers being interested in this especially all the links to blog directories and such like
  36. zenvengo
There is no substitute to hard work. The most important thing one needs to do to generate traffic is make your blog SEO friendly. And it is not an easy thing to do. For that you need a senior blogger's help. And I've been looking for one. Can anyone guide me? For the rest, zakman has given some useful tips to follow and emulate.
  37. redsil
What a great discussion. Some really useful tips. I've been a little frustrated with low traffic to my blog, in particular redsil.com/blog/
I'm wondering if my niche (if it's a niche at all) is too narrow. I also receive very few comments. If anyone can give me some tips on my blog (I won't cry if you're harsh), that would be greatly appreciated (and if I can do something in return, I'd be happy to).
    Thanks again.
  38. redsil
oh, and one more thing: I second crkian's request for promoting this discussion to a sticky.
  39. NicholasK
Great post Jonathan, I've joined blogcatalog a long while ago, but only really noticed this discussion board just today. Nice to see you here though, at least I know someone around here.. lol.
  40. jphillips
hehe, welcome to BC! nice to see you on here! It's cool to see familiar names!
  41. NicholasK
Yes I know. I wanted to cool off from work a while and whatta you know, I see Jonathan. lol. thanks for the welcome..
  42. redsil
Just a pointer, but I noticed that this really improved my readership: when writing a post, don't just state facts, but request that readers get involved. Actively request comments/participation. A little reminder at the end of the post to comment goes a long way.
    And sign-up to stumbleupon;)
    1. jphillips
I couldn't agree more! it's all about networking, relationships and community, guess i'm some kind of networking addict or something, but well, i enjoy it so

asking questions is definitely a great way to entice readers' participation, i'm now almost at the point where i know who's gonna leave the first comment on a blog post hehe gotta know your people, your readers, friends, visitors

signing-up for stumble upon surely helps a lot! just gotta make those readers wanna stay, subscribe to rss, and join in the fun! It's like any other networking site, gotta get involved.
  43. marclougee
Great bucnh of biz going on here! Super helpful. Looking to get folsk interested in stopping by my little 'ol film blog, have a look. Anybody out there inerested in DIY Film Distribution? Site traffic is key to getting the effort off the ground. Look forward to more tips!
  44. marclougee
Back again- my apologies for the typo's...too much of a hurry- ;-) All my cat's fault. Really.
  45. bnsullivan
Are we talking about looking for a lot of traffic, per se, or looking for a lot of comments? They're not exactly the same thing. I've seen low(er) traffic blogs that get lots of comments, usually by the same folks again and again, as the blog becomes a sort of mini-community. At the same time, I've seen many high traffic blogs that get relatively few comments.

If you're looking for traffic, good content and frequent posting are absolutely essential. Re writing with SEO principles in mind -- yes, and no. Write about what you want and what is interesting to you (and hopefully to others) and do it well. Keep SEO principles in the back of your mind, yes, but once you start contriving posts specifically to play to the search engines, it begins to show. I think it eventually degrades the quality of your content instead of enhancing it, and that in turn loses rather than gains traffic for you.

About 60% of the traffic to my blogs comes from search engine referrals -- mostly Google. Some of that traffic is one-shot stuff -- they're searching for specific bit of info. Period. Others seem to say, "Hmm, this blog is interesting" and they're the ones that either subscribe to the feeds or return periodically.

If you're looking not just for traffic, but for traffic from people who will comment regularly, then all of the social networking stuff that has been mentioned is the way to go, for sure.

(Just two cents worth from a geezer blogger. :-D )

Traffic? Some of it so so so misleading. My experience:

Last month I posted a video clip at: www.celebritybrands.net/?p=107

And last Wednesday I see my traffic shooting 300 per cent. Check the referrals, and I see that some discussions forum in Slovakia were discussing this video clip 'hotly' in their conversations. Of course I couldn't understand a word, but I could see "Jason Lewis", "Aero", etc. so apparently these guys were clicking the link to view the clip and comment or whatever.

I also see sudden spikes from stumbleupon. But can they be considered 'real' traffic? They're not from search engines, and they're not return visitors.
  49. absolutelytrue
This is a great thread. I get google, digg and some stumbleupon traffic.. the rest is from other people linking me and return visitors, bookmarks and RSS readers, stuff like that. I'm always trying to get more traffic though. I'll be following up with this thread to get more ideas. Oh also I try to update several times a day to keep content fresh. I never go a day without any posts, I think the regular visitors that I have expect something new when they visit. My traffic has been building up slowly with a couple bursts here and there but I am really looking forward to building a solid reader base.
  50. PrettyLady
Memes use to help, but I found once I quit taking part most of the traffic went along with it. Most of my traffic now comes from Google and stumbleupon.

Hey this discussion is really good....
I got gome new web directoris to log into, made my account in blogsoldiers etc... understood a newterm dofollow thing.

Well i am using blogger for my blog how can i enable that in my blog not wordpress????????

    Please do reply
  54. PetLvr
at my PetLvr.com/blog/ site ... every week since about October 2005 I have been posting public service announcements for the Winnipeg Humane Society trying to get unwanted pets adopted. I think I have generated some interest and recognition in the local communities here .. I recently attended another local charitable event and was even modelling our dogs with coats and, was surprised that people knew my site when I mentioned it.

That's one of the biggest traffic generation tips I can think of. There's lots of stuff competing online with "online stuff". If you can add to the online internet stuff from your offline real-world .. (newspapers, live events, book reviews, etc) I think its easier to generate real interest and longer term traffic that way.
  55. arvindsolid
traffic means a lot to blogs...but what i feel is in case of personal blogs, a dedicated readership is enough rather than traffic...
