at my http://PetLvr.com/blog/ site ... every week since about October 2005 I have been posting public service announcements for the Winnipeg Humane Society trying to get unwanted pets adopted. I think I have generated some interest and recognition in the local communities here .. I recently attended another local charitable event and was even modelling our dogs with coats and, was surprised that people knew my site when I mentioned it.

That's one of the biggest traffic generation tips I can think of. There's lots of stuff competing online with "online stuff". If you can add to the online internet stuff from your offline real-world .. (newspapers, live events, book reviews, etc) I think its easier to generate real interest and longer term traffic that way.

This is a great thread. I get google, digg and some stumbleupon traffic.. the rest is from other people linking me and return visitors, bookmarks and RSS readers, stuff like that. I'm always trying to get more traffic though. I'll be following up with this thread to get more ideas. Oh also I try to update several times a day to keep content fresh. I never go a day without any posts, I think the regular visitors that I have expect something new when they visit. My traffic has been building up slowly with a couple bursts here and there but I am really looking forward to building a solid reader base.

Traffic? Some of it so so so misleading. My experience:

Last month I posted a video clip at: http://www.celebritybrands.net/?p=107

And last Wednesday I see my traffic shooting 300 per cent. Check the referrals, and I see that some discussions forum in Slovakia were discussing this video clip 'hotly' in their conversations. Of course I couldn't understand a word, but I could see "Jason Lewis", "Aero", etc. so apparently these guys were clicking the link to view the clip and comment or whatever.

I also see sudden spikes from stumbleupon. But can they be considered 'real' traffic? They're not from search engines, and they're not return visitors.

Are we talking about looking for a lot of traffic, per se, or looking for a lot of comments? They're not exactly the same thing. I've seen low(er) traffic blogs that get lots of comments, usually by the same folks again and again, as the blog becomes a sort of mini-community. At the same time, I've seen many high traffic blogs that get relatively few comments.

If you're looking for traffic, good content and frequent posting are absolutely essential. Re writing with SEO principles in mind -- yes, and no. Write about what you want and what is interesting to you (and hopefully to others) and do it well. Keep SEO principles in the back of your mind, yes, but once you start contriving posts specifically to play to the search engines, it begins to show. I think it eventually degrades the quality of your content instead of enhancing it, and that in turn loses rather than gains traffic for you.

About 60% of the traffic to my blogs comes from search engine referrals -- mostly Google. Some of that traffic is one-shot stuff -- they're searching for specific bit of info. Period. Others seem to say, "Hmm, this blog is interesting" and they're the ones that either subscribe to the feeds or return periodically.

If you're looking not just for traffic, but for traffic from people who will comment regularly, then all of the social networking stuff that has been mentioned is the way to go, for sure.

(Just two cents worth from a geezer blogger. :-D )

I couldn't agree more! it's all about networking, relationships and community, guess i'm some kind of networking addict or something, but well, i enjoy it so :)

asking questions is definitely a great way to entice readers' participation, i'm now almost at the point where i know who's gonna leave the first comment on a blog post hehe gotta know your people, your readers, friends, visitors :)

signing-up for stumble upon surely helps a lot! just gotta make those readers wanna stay, subscribe to rss, and join in the fun! It's like any other networking site, gotta get involved.

Just a pointer, but I noticed that this really improved my readership: when writing a post, don't just state facts, but request that readers get involved. Actively request comments/participation. A little reminder at the end of the post to comment goes a long way.

Buying Traffic is the worst option. Usually traffic that is purchased is less than 30 seconds and your site is only visited because of traffic exchange points like at Blog Explosion. My largest traffic provider is Search Engines and I'd always try to get your blog seo friendly first. Buying Ads and Links helps with that and commenting and joining places like BlogCatalog is a plus as well. :)

Came across this at Yahoo! Answers. I don't vouch for any of this, but figured it might interesting reading and allow for comments from members who know better:

QUESTION: How do I get traffic for my site?

BEST ANSWER: Best Answer - Chosen by Asker

Getting traffic to your site requires a lot of work and patience.
One of the things you can do is to get an account at squidoo and write an article about a subject on your site and submit it to them. They call them lens. You can also answer questions at Yahoo answers and put a link to your blog in the source box. Get on some forums and answer some questions or interact on them for awhile, then put your link to your blog in the signature box for your forum replies or questions. Write articles and submit them to article directories with a link to your blog in the resource box. If you can't write then outsource the writing. Join a link exchange program such as link metro and get as many backlinks to your blog as possible. Get into some of the social networks such as Myspace, get lots of friends and suggest they visit your blog. Check out stumbleupon. You could also use some of the minor search engines and purchase ppc (payperclick) traffic for your blog.

SECOND BEST ANSWER (Chosen by me!):

1. Create great content – everything starts with great content.

2. Update the content regularly – make your visitors come back again and again to your blog by providing daily updates (even multiple posts per day!)

3. Submit your blog to blog directories – use
4. Network with other bloggers – comment on their blogs, read and link to other blogs and request them to link back to you

5. Email other bloggers – pitch your post to other bloggers and hope that they will link or mention your blog

6. Use techniques to showcase your blog – examples include meme games such as the Daily Meme http://thedailymeme.com/ or carnivals (visit the Blog Carnival http://blogcarnival.com/bc/ for various blog topics)

Blogs by default have built in the 'nofollow' code so that search engines won't follow the URL links added by those leaving comments on blogs. This was an attempt at preventing spam commenters benefitting from pasting heaps of links in comments. But many of us use plugins like Akismet that arrests most of the spam comments so in effect, it means that those leaving comments are really being penalised. Whilst visitors can click on a link on a comment and go to a fellow blogger's site, the search engines won't pick up the URL reference at all. There's currently a wave of 'dofollow' on many blogs, another plugin that can be installed that allows URLs to be followed by search engines. The default setting is 0 days after the comment is posted, I've changed my setting to 2 days, just in case a spammer gets in, which is highly unlikely.

You can find out more about it at http://soho-life.com/blog/2007/04/27/nofollow-link-for-comments/
