For the past week, I have been enthralled with AMC's "Mad Men." Don Draper is a man's man, sweeping clients and women off their feet in a cloud of cigarette smoke.

I would name Don Draper from "Mad Men", Gaius Baltar from "Battlestar Galactica", and Nate Fischer from "Six Feet Under" as three of my favorite television characters from the past ten years.

What have been your favorite characters and shows from the past ten years?

Oh no contest it has to be Dr Mark Sloane from Diagnosis murder, not only has he got the best TV ~ since Magnum PI but he is the world's greatest detective.
I can't think of anything better than watching Dick in an afternoon.
    1. Stillthinking
LOL! I am cracking up here. I don't think I have ever seen that show...
    2. Norski
      Excellent choice.
  2. Arcticulates
William Shatner's portrayal of Denny Crane on Boston Legal was awesome!

Hugh Laurie portrayal of Dr. House on House MD
    1. Stillthinking
I love Hugh Laurie as House. I agree, William Shatner was awesome. Sometimes, he made me cringe.
    2. amphora
House is, by far, one of the most complex and compelling characters I've ever seen created for television. And Hugh Laurie is amazing--I still can't believe that's not his real dialect/accent.
    3. Stillthinking
      Isn't he amazing? Totally convincing.

Also amazing, Rachel Griffith is Australian. Her American accent for "Six Feet Under" and for "Brothers and Sisters" is perfection.
  3. salomey5
I love Carlos and Gabrielle from Desperate Housewives.
I don't actually watch House (I've seen it a couple of times though), but I love the character Hugh Laurie plays. And have I mentioned this guy has the sexiest voice in the history of sexy voices?
    1. gtally
Did anyone every see Hugh Laurie in Black Adder and Jeeves and Wooster? The guy has quite a range and is also a really good comedian. He can play an upper crust British twit to perfection.
    2. Stillthinking
On Desperate Housewives, I love Bree. She cracks me up with her obsessiveness and the vacant stare.

I saw Jeeves and Wooster. He was also wonderful in Sense and Sensibility as the dreadfully put upon husband.
    3. salomey5
Man! Stillthinking, how the heck could I forget Bree?! She's great too!
    4. gtally
Stillthinking, put Black Adder on your Netflix list. It's Rowan Atkinson, Hugh Laurie and Tony Robinson at their best. It's both high brow and low brow comedy, laugh out loud funny, and, if you know your European/English history, a special treat.
    5. Stillthinking
I will, thank you! I love Rowan Atkinson as well.
  4. DollinNYC
oh! I loved Six Feet Under - I loved all of the characters on that show! I haven't seen Mad Men yet though I hear alot of good things about it..

I also like the character 'Sookie Stackhouse' on HBO's True Blood
    1. Stillthinking
If you get Netflix, definitely add Mad Men. This is one of the best shows I have ever seen. The characters, the acting, the costumes. All amazing.

Six Feet Under- To this day, I think this show raised the bar on TV drama. A lot of critics talk about a golden age of television drama and they credit this show as being a standard bearer. Loved it.

I have not seen True Blood yet. Is this Anna Paquin's character?
    2. DollinNYC
      I'll add it - Thanks.
Sookie is Anna's character and I thought she was great!
    3. DollinNYC
      P.S. love your avatar stillthinking!
    4. Stillthinking
Thanks! That's my little girl- "standard issue for spinsters."

That's my favorite line from "Notes on a Scandal". Dame Judy is deliciously demented.
    5. DollinNYC
oh I loved that movie too!
  5. gtally
I've got to admit, my friends have sucked me into HBO's Big Love. It's such a strange, strange soap opera of a show. Harry Dean Stanton as the "Prophet of Juniper Creek" Roman Grant is so deliciously manipulative and creepy. Great show! Makes the hair stand up on the back of my neck, half the time.
    1. Stillthinking
I have heard that it is an amazing show! I have it on my Netflix list. I will admit, I have to wait to watch most premium cable shows until they come out on DVD. (Points to self) Unemployed.
    2. gtally
Yeah, Big Love is the "laundry folding show" where, on Sunday nights, I sit glued to the TV and fold pants and towels.

And don't worry, stillthinking, I think you have a bright future as an entertainment reporter.
    3. Stillthinking
I just have a lot of time to blaze through my Netlfix list.
  6. MarcusFenix
Barney Stinson from How I Met Your Mother. NPH!
    or Buffy Summers
    1. Stillthinking
A man after my own heart. I heart Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Have you watched "Firefly" or "Dollhouse"? "Dollhouse" has the added advantage of Helo from "Battlestar Galactica".

I am a sci-fi nerd and am not ashamed.
  7. gtally
Oooh! How about Steve Carrell in "The Office?" Or the entire cast, for that matter? Some of the best ensemble acting in the business!
    1. Stillthinking
We all have a Michael Scott in our lives.
    2. DollinNYC
The Office is great and the British version is also great - totally cringeable!
    3. gtally
Yeah. Ricky Gervais is totally underrated as a comedian. I love cringe comedy, so long as it doesn't involve reality TV that makes fun of little people. The Office makes me squirm and laugh all at the same time.
  8. powerdraw01
    Jean-Luc Picard.

Patrick Stewart can take the most God-awful dialogue and make it sound like Shakespeare.
    1. Stillthinking
From "Resistance is futile" to "To be, or not to be." Yes, I agree. Patrick Stewart also turns an episode of "Family Guy" into pure art.
    2. gtally
      Agreed, Number One. Now, engage!
    3. gtally
Ooops, Wrong spot. Meant to post below. Sorry!
    4. Anok
Make that three who agree wiht that.

Did you know he did a voice over for Bambi II? I've never heard such a regal cartoon buck!
    5. Stillthinking
How did they make a Bambi II? Travesty.
  9. gtally
    And a Dwight Schrute!

I have a Dunder Mifflin inspirational calendar hanging on my wall.

    God I love this show!
    1. Stillthinking
I want one! I have been told I am the little Indian girl who loves celebrity gossip!
    2. gtally
Oh Oh, stillthinking, hopefully you don't put your foot in your mouth the way Kelly does.
    3. Stillthinking
Uhm, Yeah. I have been known to do that quite often actually.
    4. gtally
Me too. I also like Ed Helms as Andy. But I've liked Ed Helms since his stint on the Daily Show. I'll never forget how absolutely nuts the entire Daily Show "News Team" went when Dick Cheney shot his friend in the face!

      Best. Episode. Ever.
    5. Stillthinking
LOL! I remember that! Hilarious. No, I shouldn't laugh. He could have died. (Snickers under her breath)
    6. gtally
"Quail-tards." I still laugh thinking about it, as un-PC as it is. I kept that Daily Show episode on my TiVo for about a year and a half. That one, and the one where Bob Schieffer showed up as a guest. For a news junky like me, it was like a cross-over comic when the Marvel and DC Universes meet. I was geeking out over the whole thing.
    1. Stillthinking
That was hilarious! Down with that sort of thing!
  10. Norski
Howlin' Mad Murdoch, of "The A Team" came immediately to mind. Confronted by B. A. Baracus about his alternatively-sane behavior, Murdoch said something like, 'you have it easy: I have to deal with this 24 hours a day.'

    Maybe I identify with Murdoch.
    1. gtally
To bring it full circle, Dwight Schultz was also amazing as Ensign Barclay on Star Trek: The Next Generation.
    2. Stillthinking
I am so glad we can be nerds together. I forgot about Ensign Barclay!
    3. Norski
      'Ah, Ensign Broccoli.' [wince] 'Barclay!'

Dwight Schultz's one-episode role in "Babylon 5" also notable.

      And: Viva nerds!
    4. Anok
      I personally liked Face.

But I think all the girls liked him
    5. Stillthinking
Face was too old. I was 8 and too young to get all excited about him. I was all about Ricky Schroder.
    6. gtally
Does anyone remember "Riptide" that came on after the A-Team? Am I the only pop culture nerd who thinks fondly of NBC's early 80s lineup? Do you remember the name of the giant pink Sikorsky helicopter the guys flew around in?

      "The Screaming Mi Mi!"

      Seriously!

    7. Anok
      LOL Stillthinking

I don't remember riptide...maybe if I saw a clip or a character to jog my memory.

I uh, I watched Magnum PI, A-team, and Miami Vice
    8. Stillthinking
      Isn't that MadMadMargo's hilarious blog?
    9. gtally
      Stillthinking: Yes, it is!

      Anok:

      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riptide_(TV_series)

      Bon appetit!
    10. Anok
I honestly don't remember that show at all!

But I watched the intro on youtube, and stumbled on this beauty:
      www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRowUVdosfg&feature=related

Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp, 21 Jump Street Now, that show started my love for Johnny - but I didn't remember Brad Pitt ever appearing in the show!
    11. Stillthinking
Do you remember the episode when Johnny Depp was protecting the kid with HIV? He drank from the same milk carton to prove that he was his friend.

Speaking of HIV, remember "Life Goes On" Becca and Jesse?
    12. gtally
Anok: Excellent. More synthesizer music! More mullets!
  11. Stillthinking
I used to watch the A-Team in Korea on the Armed Forces Korea Network. I would visit my grandmother in the summers and would be dying to see anything in English! I actually really liked the show. That also how as an 8 year old, I started watching Larry King Live and Jeopardy.

Also, they translated the A-Team into Korean and my grandmother watched it too.
    1. Norski
thanks for sharing that. May you both enjoy!
  12. OneMuslim
I am not sure about this but sometimes when I am clicking the remote control and the Oprah came out, I would possibly take a while, hear what she is up to on her show, similar goes to Rachael Ray's tv show... Maybe they have some kind of spell keeping somebody stick onto their show.
    1. Stillthinking
Oprah is a FORCE. She's a huge influence on millions of women. Just look at her book club: every book she picks shoots to the top of the best seller list.

I guess she has created a character of herself.
  13. drjay1966
George on Seinfeld may be my all-time favorite--completely amoral and yet somehow likeable.

I also adore Willow from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
    1. Stillthinking
Dr Jay, I heart you! I am George Costanza.

"So I should pick myself up, brush myself off and throw myself right back down again?"

I have already waxed poetic on how much I love "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"
  14. Stillthinking
I also love Betty from "Ugly Betty", Dexter from "Dexter", and Anne Boleyn from "the Tudors".
  15. MarcusFenix
Jim and Pam on the Office
