I have many friends told me that "Twitter is a waste of time". They don't see the values in using Twitter especially when they already have Facebook.

Do you agree? Why?

Depends on who uses it and what they use it for.

When do you think is best to use Twitter when you already have Facebook? Or What Values you see in Twitter?

Well, I don't have a Facebook account, so I don't know what it's like (other than the epic fails posted on Reddit), but in Twitter I see a great application to provide quick updates about notable/noble tasks one might be undertaking (like, say, walking across a country for a good cause), or when one has a bunch of people who really, really care about knowing what one is doing throughout the day. There are those who keep to themselves and rarely go out (due to age, illness, etc.), but continue to show signs of life via Twitter and similar applications, and people like that.

Other than that, I don't see much to it. I, personally, don't care much for (using) Twitter and I've already got a blog and BlogCatalog, among others, to keep in touch and learn new things.

Anyone agree that Twitter is a waste of time?

I haven't found a good use for it.

I also can't seem to find out if there is any more use for it than oversharing with people who don't know or care about me and my life.

Yes, for me at least. It's got the highest spam to actual content ratio of any social media tool. Add onto that the fact that I don't REALLY want to be a part of something where over 1 million people are following everything Ashton Kutcher does apart from using the toilet.

Twitter, for now at least, seems like a fad. I remember when Myspace was as popular as twitter.. now it's seen as a "teenage" thing and even bands are starting to leave for different hosts.

If you have a large following then its highly valuable for many reasons

I think that for particular spheres Twitter is over-saturated. But it is a great utility to keep up on ongoing trends and news/blog updates, kind of like a micro-RSS for me...

But I don't like the way that most people seem to use it purely for promotional purposes now and don't engage with followers in anyway. I have too many followers who are following thousands and thousands, so it is obvious that they are not interested in following me - but just interested in me following them...if that makes sense
  5. PetLvr
I need about 50'ish more followers than I have 5,000 people following my PetLvr twitter account. I don't think that it's a waste of time, and hopefully my followers don't think I'm wasting their time.

I agree 100% with RAGordon, about twitter being more of a "great utility to keep up on ongoing trends and news/blog updates, kind of like a micro-RSS" .. because since I became more active on twitter, I do NOT use any feed reader or read any RSS Feed actually. No more Bloglines, no google reader .. nada, zilch, zero. Although, I still subscribe to email subscriptions, it is very few. Between real social media interaction and my browsing and participating on twitter, I get all the news, entertainment, information and offbeat stuff that I enjoy.

Twitter is what you make of it - if you think it is a traffic generator, then I would disagree. If you think it is a communication tool and branding tool and application - I think you would be on to something.

    I totally disagree with that!!!

What values do you see in Twitter?
  7. FaithfulinPrayer
I usually have hits on my blog from twitter every day, so it must do something. I only twitter once or twice a day about what I'm writing.
  8. SaNn
I really think...it depends on how and what is the purpose you are using it....
  9. aspotofblog
I think if you don't have a blog, then it's a waste of time. I never saw the use of twitter but now I'm slowly starting to get into it. My tweets show on my blog home page, and it's great for publishing mini-thought/posts that would otherwise not be suited for a full blog post.

    disagree!!
fast way to connect with people you might never "meet" otherwise, quick way to get news, way to find out what going on with your favorite businesses or celebrities, fast way to find out about events in your city, quick way to let people know how you are doing, and it only takes seconds.
i think it's tons of fun, just wish i started sooner!

First let me just remind you (all) that there are GENERALLY three basic reasons why one wouldbe on twitter:

    1) They have a product to promote; business, website, promotional events...etc.

    2) They are a celebrity and want to keep up with their fans in a more personal forum.

    3) They are very YOUNG and constant daily updates about what they do all the time appeals to them.

There could be other reasons, but generally those are it. If you don't think it's useful, then don't use it. Just because something is online and popular doesn't mean its for everyone.

Thanks for your article about Twittering!

I love twitter. It is very simple and it is just exactly what it is and nothing more. That's the beauty of Twitter.

Well, it points microblogging should be more innovative, free and self promotive and open. I find no comparison to BC in this present day world, wheather it is twitter, facebook or some other.
  15. eoracleapps
Well, all depend on how they are socializing with other ppl .Is the goal is to increase # of junk followers or just have few but followers whom you can interact and share common interest.

Some people use it as a chat forum in a sort of way...I just don't quite get that bit. I was at a music concert tonight and the two women sitting next to me tweeted the entire time! When are we enjoying the moment, how can we when we are always concerned with what everyone else is doing? Tweet tweet.
  17. AnastasiaFB
I've started to use it to make new contacts. I'll see how it goes.

I have written a post entitle "How to increase your Twitter Count and traffic" www.blogcastor.com/how-to-increase-your-twitter-count-and-traffic/

A question for you: Does twitting your blog post has any benefits in the search engine? If you want an answer just google search your own tweeted messages. The answer lies there.

I joined it recently but am not yet convinced as to its usefulness. I find other social networking sites more interactive and useful.

To promote ur buiseness, u should promote mine first. The society is becoming more focused where u can't deny individual earnings. I must say to social networking sites to learn from this. Mere words can't keep u stand long. Its the right of every individual to do business, more and more profitably. If u don't allow that, think ur time is counted.

I use facebook which I prefer, but I have twitter primarily for blog promotion. I joined oomph, which automatically gets followers and gets you to follow them. I'm not sure how much traffic it drives to the site, but I do post the link there when I update.
    1. alvintlh
Thanks for your sharing on Twitter.
    2. greenindia
I have a question, would we like to have social networking more open and productive, not only to the platform provider but also to the user...?
  21. lasertekservices
It's not a complete waste of time. It can be used for branding and also tweets can help bring visitors to your site or blog.
  22. AtlanticEquity
Twitter can been a decent source of blog traffic. Combine the RSS feeds of your blogs into a service like TwitterFeed who will Tweet your new posts (along with brief summary) on your behalf.

If you blog on diverse subjects, your followers will be just as diverse.

Recently, Source Blogger aired an entire week devoted to your blog on Twitter.

This was the first article for that week entitled: My Blog Can Have It's Own Twitter Page? www.source-blogger.com/2009/10/my-blog-can-have-its-own-twitter-page.html

    P.S. We love Twitter

By the way, there are two sides to FaceBook...friends and family...and Networked Blogs.

(Yes, we devoted a whole week to Facebook too.)

I think anything that gets you "out there" helps. Twitter is one of many tools I use.
    1. dkeage
I would have to agree with Brianomaracroft. Twitter certainly has its uses; however, I found it difficult to get off the ground at first. I ended up reading the tutorials on protocol and use and doing a little more research and I am confident that it will provide additional readers. I already have gained 4 readers I would not have ordinarily had, though that isn't much. I'm sure it will pick up.
  24. JunkDrawer
I use both Twitter and Facebook, but much prefer the latter. Only because I can carry on a decent discussion that makes sense because all the comments are grouped together with the topic. Twitter is all over the map and feels really disjointed to me.
    1. alvintlh
For me, i prefer Twitter as compared to Facebook.
  25. Dumasr
    Can't agree more!!!!
    1. MartinG
Like many people here i use it to automatically post my article headlines. I don't see it as a medium for discussion but more of a broadcaster. I have much more traffic through facebook.

The addition of lists helps to filter the rubbish from the useful stuff but it is dangerously close to being a waste of time!
