Two moons on 27 th August

27th Aug the Whole World is waiting for......... ....

Planet Mars will be the brightest in the night sky starting August. It will
look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. This will cultivate on Aug. 27
when Mars comes within 34.65M miles off earth. Be sure to watch the sky on Aug.
27 12:30 am. It will look like the earth has 2 moons.

The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287.

Share this with your friends as NO ONE ALIVE TODAY will ever see it again.

I guess we'll just have to check it out on the 27th and see.
  2. drjay1966
Ummm...does this mean it's the apocalypse?
    1. LGramlich
drjay1966; Yes, it would. However, the claim made here is completely erroneous, so you have nothing to fear.

I am marking our calendar! We have a telescope, that is gathering dust, for which we needed a reason to take outside and set it up. I'm getting my pen out right now. Thanks for the heads up. You're a mate.

Cool, I have to blog about this.
    1. LGramlich
PLEASE don't continue to spread this bad information! Doesn't anyone research anything anymore?
  5. PetLvr
well .. I don't know about you or anybody else .. but *I* hope to be still alive in 2287
    1. bladeaxe4
looks like u wanna cross 100 over to 200 years
    2. PetLvr
more than that .. I'll be over 300 years old in 2287

As a long-time amateur astronomer, I have to say you've probably found some old info somewhere (this "old news" keeps coming up again every few years.) Mars was at it's absolute closest & brightest (for 60,000 years,) on Aug. 28th of 2003 & even then it was nowhere NEAR the visual size of the moon. If Mars ever WAS that large in the sky, I can assure you it would portend the doom of us all (as it would imply a major shift in orbits & a possible collision with Earth.) So don't get your hopes up.

thumbs up ! waiting to see 27th night !

In the eternal words of Louis Armstrong; "There are some people that if they don't know, you can't tell 'em!"
  7. Bayho
LOL i love how the 2nd guy just like calls him out. HOAX!!! where is your source bladeaxe4? or did you just get some sort of spam in the email? well whats the point of it getting people to go outside and watch the sky for a couple minutes to witness teh fake 2 moons? fake or not i dont see the point of it being fake cause... it'll just waste people's time?
  8. alexmcone
Tell you the truth I actually heard this last year and the year before.

And here's another thing, for Mars to be visible to the naked eye in the same size as the moon, wouldnt Mars be within Earth's gravity belt ? I mean, isnt that supposed to be catastrophic ?
    1. LGramlich
(See my reply, a few posts above.)
    2. alexmcone
Oh yeah right. I've read it before that the two moons phenom is a myth. It can never happen.
  9. bladeaxe4
will see the 27th sky and shout out at this discussion guys !
    1. alexmcone
      blade -seriously astronomically its impossible.
    2. LGramlich
But...but...there's nothing to see. Well, I guess YOU can see. I already saw (back in '03.)
    3. bladeaxe4
a solar eclipse and a lunar eclipse ( it was today ) werent possible in a month at such short durations !
    4. LGramlich
It's physically impossible to have a solar & lunar eclipse both on the same day. A solar eclipse only happens during a New Moon, a lunar eclipse during the Full Moon. You may have had a lunar eclipse today (it's the full moon,) but never would you have both.
    5. alexmcone
Blade that has to do with alignment. You're talking about orbital trajectories. That's a whole new ballpark. Believe me if you can see Mars as a planet with the naked eye then we are in serious trouble. It's plain astro-physics.
    6. bladeaxe4
@ LGramlich , im not talking of solar and lunar on a single day check out august durations !
    7. LGramlich
alexmcone; Actually Mars IS visible with the naked eye (at certain times,) but certainly NOT moon-sized. It typically looks like a pumpkin-colored star (& planets don't "twinkle," as stars do.)
    8. LGramlich
bladeaxe4; August durations of what? Actually, don't even answer that. I already know you're wrong. Case closed. Enjoy your non-event on the 27th.
    9. alexmcone
@Lgramlich - I know you can see Mars with the naked eye. I meant seeing Mars as an actual planet (like in the pics)
    10. bladeaxe4
looks like LGramlich doesnt know that SOLAR and LUNAR ECLIPSE happened at very short durations in this month of AUGUST ! .
    11. alexmcone
He thought you were talking about them occuring on the same day.
    12. bladeaxe4
yups , tried to tell him in a comment few paces above !
    13. LGramlich
      alexmcone; Gotcha.

bladeaxe4; Apologies, but when you say; "a solar eclipse and a lunar eclipse (it was today)" I'M not the one with the problem. As I said, "A solar eclipse only happens during a New Moon, a lunar eclipse during the Full Moon." Considering that's only 2 weeks apart, it's hardly extraordinary.
I wrote a quarterly astronomy column for a magazine for 7 years, whereas you evidently haven't even looked into the spam you're continuing to spout, so don't tell ME who's "wrong."
      And I'm a WOMAN, btw.
    14. alexmcone
      Ouch. Sorry.
    15. bladeaxe4
im interested now, u have an astronomical set ! just checked ur profile... im just whisking over what happens on 27th not with a total possibility over it.... well, i have some definite things that i have learned till now in astro ( far different from my blah - blah till now ) so where to catch you ! sssssssssh just a word, cant be burden thy over you , hehe ... thanks for droppin' by !
    16. LGramlich
      alexmcone; S'all good.
  10. bladeaxe4
well, alexcone... i have more to do with whatevr comes on 27th, lol... then it will be all for fine.... thanks for all sweetness showered bro !
    1. LGramlich
Bladeaxe; How were your "two moons" Wed. night?
    2. alexmcone
Awww. Did you have to rub it in ?
    3. bladeaxe4
she really had to rub in, hehe !
    4. LGramlich
      bladeaxe4 & alexmcone; Yeah, I kinda did. I hate to say I told you so, but...aw, hell, no I don't! *L*
  11. kaguvkov
Nothing happens. Its already 29th of August now.
    1. PetLvr
(this "didn't" happen in 2003, when it was first circulated around the 'net - see the first post, or here www.snopes.com/science/mars.asp)
  12. Anniepooh
    DARN! I wasn't looking.
  13. LGramlich
kaguvkov, PetLvr & Anniepooh; Read the comments above. The point was made repeatedly that this was a hoax. I merely brought it up again as a little jab (in good fun,) to the original poster.
    1. Anniepooh
LOL I was kidding myself. This has been circulating on the web forever. I can't recall how many times I got an email about it.
  14. kaguvkov
LGramlich - I just want to say it in clear that the hoax is a hoax!
