Even before Miss USA judge, Perez Hilton, confessed that beauty pageant contestant, Carrie Prejean, lost a chance at the crown because of "the way Miss California answered her question," on gay marriage, the sharks were circling.

Yahoo News declared a Miss California "awkward moment."

"ABCNews.com paints her as the bad guy for offending the celebrity judge, while failing to mention that a majority of said beauty queen’s fellow Californians agree with her views," wrote NewsBusters Managing Editor, Ken Shepherd.

Entertainment Weekly on its website: "Miss Cali did no service to womankind — much less the gay marriage movement — with her stumbling answer."

And the sharks kept circling around Prejean, the 21-year-old blonde bombshell, who attends San Diego Christian College.

I think she could have answered it in a better way. BUT, remember they ask a question to help the judges make their choice. Being able to speak glibly is one aspect of the contest. Remember the contestant that thought providing maps would help Americans (and she particularly mentioned South Africa?) I feel sorry for the winner because of this bruhaha. She deserved to win in my opinion and not because of Miss California's answer, but on her own merits.

SAR, may I remind you that it is only Adam & Eve's tremendous level of cowardice that led us all to wearing clothes in the first place, and they are only required to be fully covered up in Church. But as for this statement:

"We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite. And you know what, I think in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that’s how I was raised.” (Jacked from VoodooKobra, I didn't see the pageant myself.)

While this is hardly the declaration of independence and has the approximate logical consistency of swiss cheese, not to mention some disturbing ideals (I'm gonna force my relatives on to you) for democratic government and our legal system, it is worth noting that GOD is not mentioned ANYWHERE in this statement.
  1. voodooKobra
I notice you did not include what her statements were in your forum post.

“We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite. And you know what, I think in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that’s how I was raised.”

    Those were her words.

To nitpick, if she wants to maintain a familial or religious tradition that marriage is only recognized between opposite-sex couples, that's fine, but to enforce such a pious, heavy-handed view on the gay and lesbian population through the legal system with a complete disregard to their rights is unfair.

That's the only thing I can find disagreeable about what she said, and since she's probably just repeating something she heard from her parents and/or friends without putting too much thought into the structure of the implied logical argument, it's not really worth being outraged. Ask her if she knows the difference, and if she still insists on telling gays and lesbians that they're second class citizens, bitch about that. But this is nothing. I really don't see why anyone's making a big deal about this (nor do I really understand why people make such a big fuss about gay marriage). She stated her opinion. Big whoop. She wasn't being offensive.

Ruski, I did not read whatever spin you put on this incident, I just searched for quotes and extracted the facts. I'm not quite agreeing with you, but not really disagreeing that her statements were a non-issue.

Also: "ABCNews.com paints her as the bad guy..."

    1. Agit8r
wow, that was the comment... real speaker that one!
  2. harveyavatar
She deserved to lose. She should have asked them if they were comparing (administrative) marriage as an acknowledgment of the natural family as the central unit of society or love/pleasure as a new ethical grounds for (administrative) marriage.

"I believe that marriage is between a man and a woman, and I'm not in favor of gay marriage," -- Barack Obama
  4. dsriharsha
For once.. I am agreeing with Ruski
and by agree I don't mean his view on Gay Marriage but that the California contestant is being made a joke by everyone for the wrong reasons..

I happened to watch the last round and by far California was my favorite.. others gave simple set answers and Arizona went off on a complete tangent.. but California was calm and composed.. liked her delivery
that aside, I disagree with her opinion but what else did the Judges want? They wanted to force an answer to their liking from her?

The Judges were idiots.. hell, they put that Arizona girl in top 3
  5. xmarks
It was a bad question for the setting. There is no way to answer it without offending someone.

That was kind of an unfair question. She'd offend a lot of people no matter how she answered it, unless she declined to answer.

But really... who the hell cares?
    1. TheBigRuski
If you don't care about being disqualified from a contest, employment, career advancement, or such because of your views on a particular topic...then, no, I guess you would not care.
  8. Anok
Listen - no contestant is going to win the crown by answering a controversial question unless she uses a canned, ambiguous answer. They all know that. Have you ever heard a beauty contestant state hard facts, or push political views or stand up and make a controversial statement about something?

No. Because the Miss USA/Universe/beauty pageants cannot and will not make a winner of someone who has any hard leaning ideas. If they do, they inadvertently align themselves with a particular stance - and for the sake of their organization, they must always appear neutral.

She answered the question in a controversial manner because she knew it would garner media attention. And it did.

She has worked the circuit, and made a name for herself rather quickly - so I'm not sure how you can say she's being treated "unfairly" by the media. The media is giving her far more attention than she deserves. Now she's famous and everyone else is saying "The winner? who's that?"

    Gimme a break.
    1. voodooKobra
Wonderful deduction, Anok! Cutting right to the heart of the matter just like a ninja anarchist listening to rock music would.
  9. MidwestMom
Honestly, I would have liked her to state her views succinctly and well and explain the reason for them.

I'm not a fan of beauty contests, but my understanding is that the reason for the Q & A section is to judge a person's ability to communicate effectively. Whoever wins will be speaking and answering questions all over the country.

Whether that "country" is the United States... or just California.

If someone told me someone would be blasted for only being for traditional marriage in the 1980s, I would have dropped dead. How times have changed over the years.

I still don't understand how all of a sudden we have so many gay people in this country. When I went to school, I didn't know not one. My thinking is that the Internet caused people to explore into other areas of their sexuality. This all started in the 1990s I noticed. I have not heard this mentioned yet by anyone.

Why are people so bothered what a beauty pageant contestant thinks about anything? It was only a few weeks ago we had one saying how idyllic she found Gitmo.
Asking a beauty queen for her opinion on current events is like asking a carrot for it's opinion on culinary techniques.

    Yes!
Miss California USA Carrie Prejean may have decidedly traditional views about marriage, but plastic surgery ... well, that's a different story.

The pageant princess was gifted with a new pair of knockers six weeks before competing in the Miss USA competition, Miss California pageant directors confirmed to "Access Hollywood."

And they should know - they paid for 'em.

Are you sure it's in the space of two hours? I thought that if you post a link again in the span of 2 hours you're OK. However, posting the link again at 2:00:01 counts for immediate spam classification, and possible termination... or something like that.

"Once her answer had been uttered, Carrie knew she would not be crowned Miss USA. When all was settled, Carrie walked way as the first runner-up.

And then the fallout began. She soon found out that a fight had broken out after the competition, a supportive sign displaying her picture had been torn up, verbal attacks were flying at her family and friends, and that someone was "out to get" her. Later, when logging on to You Tube at the hotel, Carrie found her face all over the internet as well as public attacks concerning her statement."

Let's get back to the subject matter here. It seems that what Miss California may have gained may be more than what she lost but none of it adds up to traditional Christian values. Sadly, in biblical terms that may make her a loser twice over.

Christian traditional values are focused on humility, respecting the body as a temple, ridding oneself of vanity and pride, and dying to self. However, what we seem to be reading here is a story about a lascivious woman who pandered to the lewd and wanton display of sexuality and sensuality that Christian churches usually deplore.

She got herself a set of fake boobs, donned a skimpy bathing suit, and vainly strutted her stuff before strange men on a stage under the lights of the TV cameras, like a temptress. Then when given a opportunity to speak her truth into the microphone she developed a case of stumble tongue ... go figure.
    1. TheBigRuski
      "Stumble tongue?"

She sounded crystal clear to me!
    1. Epicharis
ooh yeah...that's some sexy Christian there...yummy...so humble and righteous...
    2. timethief
My, my what a hard and prematurely old looking woman. I honestly feel sorry for her. She's so obviously challenged by the clash between traditional Christian values and "the ways of the world". I hope that things work out well for her in the end and that whatever notoriety she achieves can somehow be turned to good works that serve Jesus, because I have never rejected his teachings.

    Well here's an update.

TaleSpin: Miss California Nude Pics Could Be Coming
The Internet is crackling about topless and semi-nude photos of controversial Miss California Carrie Prejean that are apparently about to be leaked. The first photo, which appeared minutes ago on TheDirty.com, shows a woman who appears to be Prejean standing, looking at the camera, wearing only a pair of pink panties and using a strategically placed arm.

Alicia Jacobs, the Entertainment Reporter at KVBC in Las Vegas, has seen all six of the photos and says some are much more revealing. She thinks they may have been taken after Prejean's pageant-financed breast implant surgery about six weeks ago. The pictures are potentially explosive, particularly with the audience Prejean is now trying to cultivate.

... Even Shanna Moakler, current head of the Miss California organization, has questioned whether or not Prejean is putting her anti-gay marriage campaign above her responsibilities representing her own state. Since then Prejean has been embraced by the National Organization For Marriage and has made appearances for the group, including one at Washington's National Press Club, last week.
