Topics: Help, link exchange, opinion about the process
One of my friend asked about the use of link exchange. I have no definite answer about it. So I put the question infront of you, What is the real use of link exchange? How it helps? What is your experience about the process?

In a nutshell, search engines consider content of the sites to determine the quality of a link. Reciprocal links carry very little in terms of relevance or PR and there is a good reason for this. Google wants natural links pointing to your pages, reciprocal links are artificial and therefore Google does not want to give any weight to them.
Links from other sites with content related to your site, are considered to be more relevant to your site than those coming from site with unrelated content. -

Google is not telling site owners what to do with their sites. Google is telling site owners what to do if they are concerned about doing better in Google.
Reciprocal linking has been so abused by webmasters and Search Engine Optimization (SEO) experts (term used loosely when it comes to reciprocal linking) that the larger search engines have begun the process of disregarding reciprocal links as irrelevant.
Examples of link schemes created by unscrupulous webmasters gaming the system can include:
* Links intended to manipulate PageRank
* Links to web spammers or bad neighborhoods on the web
* Excessive reciprocal links or excessive link exchanging ("Link to me and I'll link to you.")
* Buying or selling links
Exchanging relevant, high-quality reciprocal links with other related sites is a method of driving targeted traffic to your site but do exercise caution when agreeing to reciprocal linking because in the last Google update, reciprocal links were one of the targets of the search engine’s latest filter.
Google doesn’t like paid links, if you have them and if your site doesn’t indicate them with “nofollow” or, if you’re active on the Internet selling links on your site then your PR will suffer.
If you don’t care about Google and page rank then link to whichever sites you want to link to, whether or not they are relevant to the contents of your own blog, and whether or not they are sites with paid links. But if you don’t want to be harmed in Google PR updates then the advice is to link to sites that have related content.

ok, now only I understand that all things are behind it. So the link exchange of similar type of blog is good for traffic and PR. Thankyou to know that it is effective in this way.

I think every one has the same opinion. Everyone is targeting google with the link exchange. i wish to know anybody who benefited with this process, and their experience with it? how many of you are using this and what how you get link with others?

No that's not the correct understanding of linking or of link exchanges. There's nothing symbolic about linking. Links indicate actual relationships.

I use link exchange and it helps me a lot. I don't use any paid services or tools but simply find blogs or sites with content similar to mine. I email the blog author if s/he minds link exchange. If the person agrees I place a link to their blog/site to my linklist and they do the same.
The result:
- I get some traffic. People may come to my blog from the person's blog
- I increase google PR which in the end means my blogs position in google search gets higher means more people can find and visit it
- Sometimes I find interesting sites/blogs I exchange links with and continue reading some cool stuff
