You might remember a few weeks ago I was on here complaining that another website under the name of iratedog.com was pushing my site (THEiratedog.BLOGSPOT.com) to second.

But I have victory at last! Search Google for either "Irate Dog" or "The Irate Dog" and you get me as the first link! WOO! Actually, if you search "Irate Dog" you get some videos first that aren't mine, but AFTER that it's me!

So question: Now that my name is at the top of Google, how do I go about pushing my posts up the Google pages? I think it may be near impossible unless people search a topic AND Irate Dog...

Tips?

P.S. I've just checked again and after my actual blog you get my account here on BC then my Twitter account! The Google battle has been won!

In skimming through your first ten posts or so, it seems that you are writing about very broad topics. For instance, "poverty" returns more than 67 million search results--it would be a long and difficult battle to get to the top of the charts for that term (and would require much more than one post on the subject).

I think that you will see much more success in ranking if you narrow your focus a bit (in a particular post, not overall). Even if you are talking about a broad topic, specific illustrations would introduce slightly more granular terms that you'll more easily pick up rankings for.

I can't answer your question about moving post up on Google because I don't know how . . .

But congratulations of achieving "Top Dog" status! And I'm glad to see you back on the discussion board.

It's good to be back! I was off gallivanting around the Anglesey coastal path raising money for my 3 year old cousin.

I just searched for "irate dog" and iratedog.com comes up first, followed by this very BC thread. Then your BC blog profile for your blog, then a link to the blog itself. The results are the same whether I search for irate dog (two separate words) or "irate dog" (in quotes).

      hmmm...*checks*

Odd - for me it comes up with three unrelated videos first then my site, then this thread, then the other guy's site...

What MadameX said is a good point .. people will not be looking for "Irate Dog" or "The Irate Dog" .. as you (or the other guy) will just tell them where to go.

I doubt people will be doing google searches for "PetLvr Blog" but if they do i also hope my blog comes up at the top .... but I'm MORE interested that if people search for mundane stuff like.. e.g.

"What to do if your dog is missing"
    www.google.com/search?q="what+to+do+if+your+dog+is+missing"&sourceid=navcli...

I hope that I'm close to the top.

Ahhh, but would they search with quotation marks? With them you're at the top, without them you're 5th....not a massive difference but still..

What do quotation marks tell the search engine to do differently?

Quotations find the exact quote and words in the same order that you are looking for - e.g. how people talk. With one or two words, it doesn't matter, but then without quotes on the phrases you'll get about 50,000,000,000 results that include "if", "is", "dog" etc out of context.

      It's searching Google 101

      PS // added //

Yeah .. I saw that the first time without quotes .. 5th isn't bad .. although with this type of quote one would probably stop looking after the first link - It would be great to be #1 with and without quotes .. that's for sure

I redid the search as "the irate dog" (note the addition of "the") and your site comes up first. For those keywords you rank #1 in all search engines except Bing (#4). (Results courtesy of www.mikes-marketing-tools.com/ranking-reports/)
