So many blogs, so many choices. What elements in a blog cause you to sign on to be a follower versus just visiting and posting a comment now and then?

I normally get pretty annoyed when people at BC send me a message saying "You have a really nice site, I'll follow you if you follow me" (Oh of course there being genuine!)
First I think to myself @*#%! Off, then just delete their message.
But after thinking more about your question I realized there might be a method to all this madness. By simply following someone what that does is leaves your avatar on their blog which means other visitors might get curious and click your avatar, therefore will lead to more traffic to your blog. Kind of like leaving a comment with your web address attached.
So in a way, it might be of benefit to follow & be followed.
Therefore following someone doesn't mean you care about them, its to your benefit to leave your mark permanently on their blog.
For me if I like a blog then I just bookmark it, that's it.

Interestin, Time. I never thought about it that way.
I wish "following" meant that the person was notified when a new blog post was published. That would be something very useful. But it doesn't really mean anything, except you're giving your stamp of approval. I have followers that read every single post I publish, and followers that don't seem to visit very often. So for me, when I follow, it's to say, "Hey, great job."

Hmmm. I cannot help but be reminded of a dog visiting a fire hydrant. They, too, leave their "scent" everywhere they go. So, now I see it from an entirely different perspective!

It doesn't just leave your avatar...it also lets you see when a new post is put on the blog. I follow through Goggle friend connect. I get to see what the newest post is and part of the post so I can visit again if it interest me. Here is just one I received today through Goggle connect....
How to check how many backlinks your site/blog has

Its time to tool at a very important part of building traffic to your blog. I'm sure by now you have either thought of getting backlinks to your blog or are in the process of getting them. First of all I w...
The site link is active so all I need to do is click on it and I will be taken to the article of interest. It's a great way to keep up with the blogs that interest you without having to bookmark or remember the URLs to each and every one.

RSS is probably a better way to follow and keep up to date with a blogs changes and developments.
Yes, I guess following is a stamp of approval, but with so many people just coming along requesting that we follow each other, then it just becomes a silly game of cat & mouse.

Hot chick writing it usually gets me to come back.

Such a sophisticated process, DB. (*Dani grimaces...)

I do not like feed subscription and bookmarking because I do not like anything in my email and I often delete my cookies.
This is why when I am interested in seen more posts from a blog, I follow it. It is like a library I sometimes go when I want to read.
This does not means that I will read all the post from the blogs I do follow. I regrets that not everyone has this feature, because there are some really cool blogs here I would have like to follow.

I follow blogs via the google connect thingy or usual RSS subscription, as I read all the blogs I like via my google reader.

If I don't put a blog in my feed reader, then I usually forget about it.

I like to get to know blog authors over time, so I usually lurk via feeds for a while before I comment.

You approach it very clinically, Claire... (*Dani laughs)

Safe blogging by Claire... I can see the merits! One probably has to reach a certain weirdo factor before you gleefully jump in up to your eyeballs then?

A lot of people don't even know what RSS is. Anyway, I'll subscribe to a blog that I find unique and honest (and it has to be unique/honest in some way as there's so much clutter out there), and I will read each and every post. I'm a loyal reader (if the blog keeps my interest).
    1. DaniG
How many blogs do you follow?
    2. aspotofblog
At the moment, I'm following about 12 blogs. However, I'm also quick to delete blogs that disintegrate (i.e. they have lost the plot and therefore don't interest me anymore). But I'm always on the lookout for new GREAT blogs. I find that the best blogs inspire me.

I'm going to admit my ignorance in not knowing the difference between reading/bookmarking/following. Can you explain?

If you are a niche blogger, it is essential you monitor trends of the blogs in your industry.

Source Blogger is highly selective, but has recently subscribed to many blogs as of late...

    Source Blogger blogs about blogging...

I follow them if I like what they say. I do not comment quite as often as I should. I dont have that many I follow,. I dont have to much time to just start to visit blogs. Most of the time if it is rude silly (CA), just funny (freaksmack), on cooking (To many to name), or on homesteading (again to many to name) then I follow

If I click on someone's blog/post and enjoy what I've read, I usually leave a comment referring to something that was said in that post to acknowledge that I actually read it. Just typing "great post" isn't very genuine to me. Even when I visit and do not comment, I'll sometimes check back to see if they've written something new that'll catch my eye.

I assume you are targeting blogs in your niche/category for the purpose(s) of link building...and networking?

Source Blogger had a week-long discussion on that topic...

Somewhat but really I just enjoy reading, about many different things, not just about things that are similar to what I write about.
    3. DaniG
      You're so...genuine! That's great! It's a contrast to all the thinly-veiled attempts to spam. Kudo's ATW!

Unless someone is a total jerk or grosses me out I will offer friendship and do follow. You never know when they might write something wonderful or funny.
    1. DaniG
Theresa, you really roll up your sleeves and dig in, too! That's great. You've sent me several insights that were helpful to me! My thanks.

I believe people visit one or twice, then they follow if they like the site. One must enjoy visiting and commenting to be followed. Plus it takes good content. This the hard part. Discussions are excellent for having fun and learning how people think and feel.
    1. DaniG
Yes, that's true. I never really noticed it before, but I do have "on" days and "off" days. When my household stress goes up, my writing/posting/commenting drops way down. Not much I can do about that. I also have witty days and non-witty days.

If I find myself ending up at the same blog a few times, I'll follow it because it becomes apparent that I enjoy the posts. I run across plenty of great things that I enjoy on blogs that I don't follow. The ones that consistently capture my interest are the ones that I follow.

The blogs I read daily are on my feedreader, or my google home pages both can be categorized and that is helpful.

I am not sure how people use the assignments here, I don't really use them to read blogs from at all. I don't think most people do.
  15. TheCrazyhorse
If it is interesting I follow and as well if there is a request.
  16. lifeshighway
The blogs I follow daily are on my feed reader. I will also follow other blogs by catching up on them maybe once a week to see what is going on. I am much more of a lurker than a commenter.

I do click on people's avatars and follow it to their blog. I have picked up favorites that way.
  17. Kowgirl
Since everyone I follow does NOT write a new article daily it's easy to see who does have a new post with Google Connect. I just go to my
Dashboard and scroll down to see which ones I want to read. It saves me time by doing it this way. I love different things so I have many blogs I am following. There are some people who join as followers who don't know how it works and will soon forget what blogs they did sign up to follow.
