Ning charges if you want to advertise, they also keep all the videos and images on their backend - they all live on a ning URL. Ning also recently shut down their code customization. It's in PHP and people used to edit it with ease, now they don't allow it. They provided a cool service for a little while, which was to allow non-programmers to set up their own social network, but now they have grown greedy and are trying to squeeze money out of it.Also they allow people to join networks and spam them with invites to their own networds. There are CMSs now that are much better for setting up these networks - try joomla, I like elgg too, but joomla is well backed, elgg is new and unstable in my eyes

I built a ning network called ignitionnation for a friend. It's for motorheads - I've been dealing with Ning for a while. Puke

thanks, i do remember you saying this for

but it's very useful for me at this point and meets a specific outcome

I will be looking for a more a similar more flexible, non expensive platform that I can install by one click, like wordpress in fantastico. Any ideas

If you don't want your logging / password been stolen you should use SSH not FTP protocol because SSH encrypts the login / password when it transits through the Internet (similar to https).
