You would love where I live! A couple of months ago I watched a flock of flamingoes on the wing...there is a colony of Giant White Pelicans in the wetlands nearby and I often watch them flying in V formation over my house...they are HUGE and look for all the world like a squadron of white airplanes!
I have ibis that come visit my garden, one of whom likes to play with one of my dogs. There is the weaver bird colony and three kinds of doves/pigeons that nest in my trees. When my trumpet vine flowers, I get visits from sunbirds and sugar birds, sipping the nectar from the bright red cups.
I have seen blue cranes, spur winged geese, Egyptian geese, giant herons, egrets, blacksmith plovers (one of those chased my husband and dog in a parking lot when they got to close to a young one!), francolins (a kind of native partridge) and those gawky helmeted guinea fowl and many other species I cannot name.
I love birds! Google Rietvlei in Cape Town and you'll find some sites that show the wetlands just down the road from my house. The nearest neighbourhood isn't called "Flamingo Vlei" (Flamingo Marsh) for nothing!
PS...there are bird hides in the Vlei and SANCCOB is located there...the place where they rescue seabirds in trouble.
