Yesterday was a celebration of West Virginia Day across our state. For those that are not aware why this day was so important to the folks of WV...feel free to visit the front page and archives on my site.

My main question is What do you think of when you visualize West Virginian's?

Almost heaven.... Blue ridge Mountains... Shenandoah River.... Life is old there... older than the trees? Younger than the Mountains... blowing like a breeze?

U Got It! ~ going to show a 100+ year old beech in my front yard soon! Been fighting mother nature to keep it alive

I am grateful to our crazed cousins of the West. LOL! Worst thing you guys did for yourselves was breaking off... I mean - you could have had all this tax revenue and paved roads!

(I live in Virginia in case that wasn't obvious to the rest of u)

Last time I was in Virginia ~ I walked through sad immigrant workers homes that the trash bills hadn't been paid ~ still supporting slave labor last I saw

Immigrants? In Virigina - surely you jest!

(LOL! I was busy... btw - what do you think I do - monitor BC all day long!)

Beautiful in parts, environmental disaster in others. I also remember an old-time brick factory that wasn't in use any more. Generally positive impression of the state, even if some of the few places I saw were pretty destitute looking too.

Family members traveling with African American friends had a somewhat different experience. People in a restaurant that was open suddenly claimed it was closed. So that's another image being passed around in my family for the past few years.

In history I have images of pretty bad treatment of coal miners during strikes many years ago.

The only thing I know is the Neil Sedaka song.

    Any great guitarists there?

It's only a hop skip and jump from here - Charleston s I think of people wasting their money on slots, mostly people without money.

Some raunchy run down towns and some nice ones.

    Hiking along the Potomac.

I also think of Canaan Valley which is great for hiking in the summer and snowboarding in the winter.

Most of the people who go to the slots are from out of state. This state has high poverty. When I first moved to WV I was in culture shock. We had an outhouse and I had never seen one previously. There are townships that are dots on the map. I'm not sure what classifies as a town. Coonskin park has something like 800 acres of land lots to do paddleboating, tennis, vollyball, swim, and several playgrounds. I've been to both Cleveland Public Schools and WV Public Schools and the educational system in WV is excellent in comparison to Cleveland. The teachers here are more caring for their students. This is why my kids will probably continue to live in WV. There are disadvantages too. In Cleveland they have an awesome Art museum, professional football, baseball, basketball, used to have hockey. There is none of that in WV entertainment from sports happens from high school games.

no offense, rearvumirr, but Mountaineers sports pales in comparison to Cleveland sports. Shirley is a pro sports fan.

WV is a beuatiful, I have been there. And the fine arts might be outstanding. I know the state has a rich and long history that many can enjoy.

But organized sports...sorry, nothing to write home about.

I live in MD, not too far from the WV line. Last week, I took one of my sons to a river camp in Harper's Ferry. He enjoyed it. WV looks a lot like where I live in MD, not much difference. Of course, that would vary from county to county in both states and then you would see a huge difference.

I must admit, Country Roads by John Denver always comes to mind when I think of WV. However, he wrote that song while driving on Clopper Road which is in Maryland!

I have family in MD ~ been a long time since I've been there though

I used to have family in WV. My BIL and his family lived there but moved to Florida last summer

Dusty road side diners...hot chicks serving coronary burgers and little villages of people who eat other people.
