Westerner in Dubai - learning about Ramadan!

Ramadan Kareem!
After 7 years in Dubai I thought it was high time I tried to understand the occassion of Ramadan.
I'll abstain from drinking alcohol for 1 month and of course follow the local rules about not drinking or eating in public despite in being over 40 degrees Celius right now:

Ramadan sucks. most of my family is fasting. the other will fast when it's the christians turn. 2X a year, i get "bullied" into fasting. it never works.-
The bullying has to stop then!
