Mine: My girlfriend and I were in Las Vegas for New Years. She got sick and we had to take a cab to the hosptial. I accidently dropped over a thousand dollar in the back seat of the cab. The cab driver called me back and showed me. I gave him a great tip for his honesty. We have told that story a hundred times since then. I'm still in awe of his honesty and integrity. What a great human being.

I actually received an apology from a driver who cut me off. To me, that was just wild!

We were in the process of applying for a Habitat for Humanity home. A volunteer came to our home twice and she represented us to Habitat's board members. During this whole thing her husband became ill and it put us back by two months. Even though her husband was so ill he was hospitalized she called to make sure we were pulled through and accepted. I won't ever forget that. Because of that my children will have a decent home to live in by next Christmas.

Once, when I had just moved to Moscow (it was just my second day in town), I got lost on my way home from the archive. I happened to see a girl I recognized from the airport the day before, so I admitted to her that I was lost. Well, it turned out she lived near my apartment and walked me home. She asked me all about my research as we walked. The next day, she showed up at my door and told me she wanted to take me on a tour. I spent the day with her, and she showed me to all the little churches where I would find the art I wanted to study. Without that unsolicited kindness, it truly would have taken me weeks to find what I needed.

I will always be grateful to her -- her name was Irina (which means Peace.)

Great stories at a time when all people seem to focus on is doom and gloom. People still do kind acts. It just doesn't make the news. Let's really build this discussion up. It feels pretty good reading these.

My favorite random act of kindness was as I'd just gotten off the PA Turnpike and my oil light had come on.

I was pretty new to driving and had no idea how to add more oil.

So I was reading how to do this at a rest stop-- and some nice older man came over, gave me some instructions and some advice on how much oil I would need and really made me feel better about the whole thing...

I barely got to thank him enough when he just got in his truck and drove away.

What a nice thing to do. It made my day!

There's been so many, that I wouldn't know where to start...but one that does come to mind happened this past Christmas.

I was working as a part time reporter for a little weekly rural newspaper. Being that I do live in a small community, and I am somewhat known, nothing is scared.

My children and I are alone here, and have been trying to find some firm ground to stand on after getting away from an abusive relationship.

It's been a struggle, but not one that I had made public until recently with my new blog....

This past Christmas I received some misc. cards and letters from people in our community wishing me and the kids a good Christmas and New Year. One kind soul even included a little money - people didn't sign their names, but just wanted to let us know they cared.

It was amazing how all of that came at a time when I and the kids needed it most.
