I'm NEW at all this, but need traffic, so I need this info..
SO far for me, Blog Catalog is best, MyBlogLog next..

in the 90's, the Yahoo Stock BB's would generate a lot of traffic to financial sites..

I've gotten nothing from Facebook or Myspace, plus the sites don't look very professional either - what am I doing wrong there?

    1) BlogCatalog for socializing
    2) BlogCatalog for talented people
    3) Twitter (for the fun challenge of 140 characters)

Digg gets 60 million views a day.. why would I use anything else?

I get most my traffic from digg & stumble

I'm active on mixx and propeller too.. but they bring much less traffic.

I get very little traffic from BC, but it's better traffic since it's mostly other bloggers who are dying to link to me

You'll notice BC brings little traffic, but that traffic can be more valuable than the hordes of diggers and stumblers.. also BC traffic has a much lower bounce rate for obvious reasons

I think social media like Facebook, Stumble and Twitter (cross & garlic - guard your hard drive with your life from this one!) are extremely over-rated because they are driving fickle traffic with very short attention spans.

I mean are we talking page views (statistics) or readers? I would rather three people visit my blog each day and actually take the time to read and enjoy it than 600 that click and are gone never to be seen again.

Guess I'm old fashioned or something.

Blog Catalog cannot be beaten for quality readership, community, advice, support and friendship.

I dunno if your old fashioned, but your right.

Don't underestimate the digg\stumble traffic, yes it's mostly 5 seconds on your site then exit, but a few of them are real people too, and will actually read what you have to say.. at least once every 14 days.

BC traffic is very prime, but it shouldn't be 100% of any marketing campaign

      No agreed
I understand the need for marketing but I guess each individual blogger just has to ask themselves how much they need it?

I like the applications that fuel the integration of worpress, twitter and facebook. I can now create a article and post it to my wordpress blog and have it automatically reach my friends on facebook and twitter, as well as the readers of my Blog.
