Seriously, it keeps me busy and in the house, so I don't feel the need to have to drive around and waste gas!

So, you will buy things online rather than going out?
    2. wolfcreek
We aren't buying online...yet. But as things go along, it might be our best bet.

I just don't go anywhere unless I absolutely have to. When I do have to run errands around town or get stuff for the apartment, I try to do it in one big trip and as few places as possible. My wife said something funny yesterday. Don't know if she was joking or not. She said she wanted to buy a scooter (to save gas) to go to work on. I laughed, then replied, "And what do you plan on doing in the winter when all the snow and ice bombards us, like it usually does? A scooter isn't going to get it."

My wife said the same thing basically. I grew up on motorcycles, and she suggested that I buy another one.

We had a local news story about the increase of Vespa's (scooters)sales. It is amazing that those silly things can do 70+ miles on a single GALLON of gas.

If we didn't live so far out of town, we'd definitely have to consider it.

      Haha...this really funny!

Instead of going 80 mph on the interstate, I go 65.

      HA!!!!

I can't remember the last time I drove 65 mph...that's TOO fast for me.

      Grandpa Tommy, lol

I am NOT kidding, my 5 year old says "you drive like Grandpa, mommy drive fast."
    4. calais50
      sad...
    5. RTBjr73
It's not sad. I keep my slow butt in the slow lane on the highway right where I belong.

When I was 16, all I cared about is how fast I could go. Now at 35, and 3 kids, all I care about is how fast I can stop.

P.S. - If you pass an ugly guy driving a silver Concorde, in the slow lane on the highway, blaring death metal, wave to me!!

We have to have gas. We live 10 miles from anything that can be useful. However, we are making fewer trips and trying to do what we can with each trip to maximize it.

I'm also making darn sure that our tire pressures are correct and that we're using all the advantages a road offers (downhills, wind direction, etc.)

We're also taking off slower from stops, trying to roll to a stop light to use less brake, and cutting the idle when we are sitting for too long. The latter seems to be toughest in 100 degree+ heat, but we manage where we can.

I turn off my car and put it in neutral when going down hill.

I actually have always tried to not use the car if possible. If I have errands to run, I try to run them all at the same time & plan my trip out ahead of time.

I try not to use my A/C if possible & have developed a system of turning it on for a couple of minutes, then off but recycling the interior air to keep the cool air inside. I'd say, I have the air on for about 1/3 of the time.

I walk my son the 6 blocks to & from school, walk for excercize, and to the convenience store. I have a 2002 Honda Accord that is pretty good on gas, and have only 58,000 km on it -every time I take it in for an oil change they always ask "are you sure that's how many kms?".

I work from home so I don't have the commuting expense, and I do a lot of my shopping on Amazon.com.

Wow, that's really dangerous thing to do. Unless you have a really old can without power steering, when you shut off the engine you no longer have full control of steering and can not accelerate if needed in a dangerous situation! better to go to neutral than shut off the engine..

      yea, that part sucks.

I see lot's of professionals taking the trolley or bus to work. They use the cars on weekends. Some people just don't waste it now that the prices are out of the roof.

We just withdrew my children from their preschool program's summer session which they participated in last year. The drive is about 40 minutes each way. We'll be spending lots of time exploring our neighborhood on foot this summer.

these threads seem to pop up 15 times a day.

I'll say the same thing I've said in all of them: Hypermiling - and it does work.

I think this is blown out of proportion by the medias fear mongering.
I hear people say everyday, how expensive it is to drive from Portland to the coast and Cannon Beach. It's 160 miles round trip. If your car gets even average gas mileage, it's only an extra $7.00.

Is it just me? That doesn't sound that extreme. It seems to be a shock at the pump but if you figure out your mileage and actually how much extra you're spending, I don't think it's going to be as much as you imaging.

I could be full it too.
