the square tend to take out image ads that tend to be clicked on. there is alot of power in the square. also advertisers will pay more if the ad is less intrusive as my theory goes. many people who pop them up top in the redzone are driving away visitors and many times the ads dont properly target yielding lammo 3 cent hits. move those leader boards up top to squares down below and even out of the posts to not annoy people and you will start to see clicks that range from 1 to 10 dollars instead of 1 to tn cents

Placement, if your goal is too earn from your site then place the ads where your visitors see them first, and where they might see them last.
To really maximize your earnings, now trust me on this...don't read all the nonsense people tell you about what type of ads, you have to post everyday and patience and all that jazz....to maximize your earnings you need targeted search engine traffic, it is that simple.
A visitor who visits your blog for example: if you blog about "fake diamond rings", and a visitor from blog catalog visits your site and clicks an ad I guarantee it wont pay you more than .02 cents, but if a visitor does a search on google or yahoo for "fake diamond rings" and finds your site as a result, and then clicks an ad that they find relevant because your site has what they were searching for, then I guarantee that will pay you much more....much much more. -

Two tips. stay focus on your topic. I think the worse thing one can do is to try making money on personal blogs. Blogs that rant and rave about the world around them.
Blogs that make money are those 'informative' blogs. So stay within your niche and use your blog like a publishing house.
Second is to have your adsense in between post or after the post. You can study how ezinearticles.com place their ads.
If you are to place ads in post, use 336x400 or something. (The big rectangle ads). They increase your click through rate.
Good luck! -
