Just like athletes, what do you do before writing anything on your blog.

This will be a lot of help to new bloggers like myself so please share your thoughts.

I poke stuff up my rear end, not specifically to help my writing just generally.

I usually take long walks and look at the scenes around me. Sometimes these long walks take from where I work to my home. It's fun and you get to think a lot while walking.

Finding peace and quiet. With a house with two kids, that can be difficult to do at times. Once I have the quiet, I can write until my heart is content!
  4. ocwlounge
I personally wait for the "feeling to write" strike me before I write.

Do you think that's good? I guess being a newbie I'm still trying to get my rhythm.

Thats the same as me, if Im in the writing mood I write if not I dont.

May be sad but I keep a lil pen and paper with me to jot notes of things I come up with while away from the PC to help with my creativity.
    2. melindaville
@mugshot--I do the same thing. I also have a notepad by my bed to jot down notes that I think of while I am sleeping!

    I write. Seriously.

The best practice is to read more and to write more. Straightofrard and simple as it sounds: write more and read more. Just go ahead, open your text editor right now and start writing. Don't ask yourself about the topic; write.

Believe me and my huge experience in professional writing.

    Good luck with your writing.

I don't force it. Sometimes, I write several times a week. Sometimes, I write once a week. It depends on whether or not I have anything to say.

    Pre-writing exercises? Well, no wonder.....

Why am I always the last to know?
    1. dinsquared
      It's news to me M3.
    2. Agit8r
like... popping knuckles... oh mental excercises.
  9. dinsquared
Ummm...I find pictures? And...think about what I want to say about them?

    Open eyes, walk to computer.
    1. MadMadMargo
      That's my method.

People will hardly give you good advice because they don't wanna share their secrets (oops they may lose their readers if they share with you).

Okay the above lines shows my pre-writing exercise.
    1. MadameX
Disagree completely. While there are a few that maintain that mentality, I think that most successful people are happy to share what they've learned. It's only those who are insecure in their own talents and achievements that fear competition.

I make my living as a writer and, like many other professional writers (including some very high profile ones), I blog about writing and publishing specifically for the purpose of letting would-be writers know that it's not as hard as they've been led to believe.

LOL interesting feedback & I agree
I knew that I wouldn't agree with my own comments too.

No pre-writing exercises for me. I do tend to plan my posts in the morning in the shower. I don't know if it's the lack of visual stimuli, or the hot water, or what, but I seem to be able to concentrate there.

Other than that-- for blog posts, I just sit down and start writing.

For the novel I'm writing, I plan about 20 chapters ahead in outline format, and then write from there.

The shower is the best place for thinking creatively. The shower and the circus, but it's not so easy to get to a circus all the time.
    2. Agit8r
unless you travel w/ the circus.
    3. ThriftShopRomantic
As I have clown fear, the only thing I would get done at the circus is shrieking.

I'd better stick to the shower.
    4. maxisangry
Clown fear? Why am I the only person on earth who doesn't have clown fear? I love those crazy effers.

Many of my posts are the result of me talking to other men. I make a note to myself about the topic and when the moment feels right to write about it I do. The main question that determines if I write about the topic or not is "Will it help someone else?" Then I write from my heart.

I have a cup of tea...not specifically because I am going to write an entry, but because I drink a lot of tea...I'm British, don't you know...
  15. Sam1982
In short - I finish the work that I have on my desk. But otherwise I do a bit of research first on what I'm writing about.

    ...search for snacks...sit down...eat snacks.
  17. maxisangry
I inject myself with Science, then I drink some poetry, and go outside and smoke some love. Then I stop writing stupid crap like that, and I get down to it.
  18. SamBangs
    See this:

It's been a long time coming.

Oops posted this in the wrong discussion... brain dead today

    @maxisangry: Very cute.

My blog is the corporate blog for a company that uses a lot of scientific journals and reports, so my blogging usually starts with reading about nutrisciences. I find the ideas flow better when I have a real idea of what I want to say and where I'm going to get my references.
    1. maxisangry
Thanks for that, but I am not cute. I am angry and fearsome, and I only use Science for evil purposes.
    2. Seabuckthorn
@maxisangry: Wow, well I use science only for good, so I guess we're mortal enemies! Expect a visit to your secret weather machine laboratory, which BTW isn't so secret, akshully.

    1. turn on computer
    2. grab fresh coffee
    3. sit down

it's a rough routine but I somehow make it through it.
