Do you look at art for pure enjoyment? inspiration? education? history? a new perspective? healing? Why do you go to art galleries or museums?

I like art that challenges me to think about things, especially the issues of life. I enjoy looking at pieces that make me think, How in the world did they do that? How long did it take them to do it? Art that seems to stretch beyond our own human capabilities, art that is unique and art that gives me hope are all my reasons for looking at art.

I agree with you DorettaG , that answers to all the questions you asked are nice ones to ponder when viewing a piece of art . Unfortunately , much of the art produced over the last few decades is
more or less abstract as to its creation and meaning . Much of it
following on the heels of Picasso , who really disdained the art that I appreciate the most . Art that requires no viewer to guess as to what it may represent or mean . So my reason for looking at art is just to determine whether it meets my definition of art . If it
has no specific and clear meaning that a viewer may easily discern ,
then I can give it no value as art . And no recognition as having any utility for mankind .-
That's an interesting comment Greenwolfe1962. Many of today's conceptual artists have broken up the meaning of "image" as we knew it back in the day and have challenged our ways of seeing. It seems that they are more for aesthetic purposes but many of them at the same time, speak to the truths about society or what is happening in society. Things have become so fast paced in the information age that we haven't seemed to slow down and appreciate art. We want to see images flashed across our face without any real consideration for deep thought.

Hmm good answer. Me too. It's inspiring and validating. For me, it confirms my world and my own thoughts. I often look for paintings that are similar to mine or that have the esthetic I'm looking for. Sometimes paintings represent the ideal that someone else has reached, and I know I can get there too.

It just fills me with Awe looking at some people's skills... I went to Louvre a few months back, and I would gape every few minutes. Lol. It's wonderful to realize there were/are so many talented people all around.

I look at art for inspiration with my own work and life in general. Art I consider great has the ability to lift my mood. I don't believe art requires any rules at all. I personally think that any limits on the ways we express ourselves as artists stunts our growth as human beings and puts potential artists (especially if you get such ideas into their heads when they are young) who may have something outstanding and unusual to say right back into boxes of someone else's rigid design.
I occasionally go to museums, but I also enjoy looking at art that people hang anywhere. The type of art that would never make it into museums because it doesn't fit a certain standard. That said, I also appreciate the work of some artists who are considered "masters" but not simply because they are "masters," their work has to move me in some way. I regard someone who creates an outstanding graffiti mural in the same way and consider them masters, too. -
There is oft times a portal to the past in art.
Your mind stretches as it sees the interpretation the artist visualized as he or she created his or her art.
There is a moment in time where you can connect with the artist - and be in awe - or have questions - or feel a kinship with the artist - no matter the century or the topic of the art piece.
Art is a very individualistic thing - and each person is affected differently by each art piece.
It is often enough to discuss art that you are viewing with others that are there with you as a means to enlighten your horizon.
Art is many things - to everyone - and to some, a waste of time.
Beauty, is most definitely in the eye of the beholder. -
Hey all, thanks for replying. I recently came across a website (link below) and was amazed at the power of art to heal, enlighten, and inspire people from all walks of life. Communities are also being changed by art. I think artists can learn a lot from each other. nburmandesign summed it up when he said, "Sometimes paintings represent the ideal that someone else has reached, and I know I can get there too."
I hardly see it as a waste of time. Art affects so many different facets of our lives. What would we do without it? It is the underlying cause for so many great inventions and systems we see today. Art is the basis for communication. The people who began cave drawings must have had something in mind. There is something about art that captures the human spirit, whether it is abstract, pictorial, or modern.
Someone had to place thought into what they were doing and why they were doing it. I think no matter the type of art, we can still appreciate the thought process. Here's the site, enjoy:

I love to see other peoples art because it can inspire me to have a go at something different and I love to see different interpretations of a subject.
I really enjoy photographs too and view them also as an artform. I have other artists work on my walls for many reasons. Some work I find uplifting. Sometimes because the art captures a moment that appeals to me and sometimes because it is a contemplative piece that makes me think.
But, I think in terms of images and colour. I cannot imagine a world without art.
For myself, recently once told me that my animal art went beyond a photographs and brought the animal alive to them because I gave it soul. I view it as one of the best compliments on my work to date. -
"Do you look at art for pure enjoyment? inspiration? education? history? a new perspective? healing?"
All on your list except healing.
"Why do you go to art galleries or museums?"
I tend to go to museums more than art galleries. If I do go to an art gallery it is for a specific show, or a specific artist, or I know the gallery owner and like their choices.
I love museums, the atmosphere, the range of works I can explore and study, and the chance to go and sketch. -
Art can mean many things! And it's funny to see how each individual has their own impression of art. I love the colors, the line art, the thoughts behind it, the way it makes me feel (almost wanted to burst out in a Michael J. song :|)

Interesting to see here all the reasons to look at art. I really love to go to a museum or gallery, but it does not affect me emotionally (which is totally the opposite with music), but I am very interested in its history and like to see the development over time, especially in modern art.
The best experience I had was in a museum once in Madrid (can’t remember which one) when I started on the top floor and going down floor by floor, I got to see the whole history of art through the ages, chronological in one afternoon. Amazing. -
Interesting, 'cos I my first blog post was concerning cinema. What I think of it and how I perceive it. And I think art, like cinema, reveals to us some in measure, the visible and invisible nature of our hopes, dreams, fears and everything that falls in between. A piece of art might be unique but what it represents is common to us all.

Pretty much for all the reasons you indicate.
Why do you go to art galleries or museums?
Same reasons. -
Great discussion....I have many reasons for looking at art
Beauty and proportion
Personal meaning & feeling, Inspiration
Aesthetics
Geometry
Politics
History, Education
Perspective
I look for something that speaks to me intimately.
I feel it is a personal thing and it is between you and what you are looking at or observing.
It is most personal and in a way intimate and scared.
What a great way to understand ourselves as human. -
