I admit it. I am a shameless lover of films, but I'm driven to strong characterizations. My top 5 can change periodically as I discover a new one but here are my current picks:

Magnolia
The Ninth Configuration
Harold and Maude
The Pope of Greenwich Village
Dark Knight (only because of Heath Ledger)

Loved Godfather and had a party in my home with the sountrack playing. I served gnocchi's, canoli and Chianti. I also had a red and white checkered tablecloth. Great fun!

  4. aningeniousname
Like you my favourites change over time and I probably have a list of a 100 must see films but I'm just going to chose five films I could watch any time and still enjoy even though I have seen them countless times.

    1/ Life of brian
    2/ Spinal tap
    3/ Casablanca
    4/ La cage aux folies
    5 Taxi driver
    1. askcherlock
      Dark Deniro in Taxi Driver---compelling.
    2. MidwestMom
I thought DeNiro blesses pretty much anything he touches. Recently saw Awakenings and was impressed yet again. I'm not quite sure how he does it.
    3. askcherlock
Taxi Driver: Dark De Niro in one of his best films.
  5. MadMadMargo
    Holy Grail
    Life of Brian
    Princess Bride
    Reservoir Dogs
    Dusk 'Til Dawn
    1. askcherlock

I love cartoon film which has meaning value. Here's my list (not ordered)
1/ Wall-E : Their imagination of the future is great, and it's love story - touchy
2/ Kungfu Panda : We can get many valuable word from this film
3/ The Greatest Game Played : this true story full of meaning
4/ Miss Congeniality : Just love to watch William Shatner
5/ The Matrix Trilogy : It's philosophic film. I like it. I can't understand the film until I see the supplement
    1. askcherlock
I could see Shatner in anything. He is like a caricature of himself.
  7. Perky
    1) Braveheart - I'm a big fan of his work and this one is his best
    2) Last of the Mohicans - Daniel Day Lewis running with a long rifle in one hand and a gunstock club in the other... that's insanely hot & macho AND heroic
    3) Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves - i love Kevin Costner in this movie
    4) Transformers - my fav cartoon when I was a kid, so seeing this on the big screen & it was so well done, that was just magic.
    5) At the moment, it's a toss between Iron Man and Dark Knight
    1. askcherlock
Haven't seen Iron Man, but Ledger was pure artistry in Dark Knight. My toss for you would be that!

    Citizen Kane
    An Affair to Remember
    Vertigo
    His Girl Friday
    Casablanca
    1. aningeniousname
His girl friday is hilarious, I love those screwball comedies especially bringing up baby and my man godfrey.
    2. Epicharis
You, my friend, have good taste.
    3. MidwestMom
The best part about His Girl Friday is the dialogue. No one has such snappy dialogue these days.
    4. aningeniousname
Yeah that's very true the last time I can remember them trying to make that sort of film and failing spectacularly was the M Pffifififififier and G Clooney film "One fine day"
I think the last person to really pull that snappy dialogue off was Woody Allen in "Annie Hall"
    5. MidwestMom
      @anin

I agree. There are brief flashes of nice sharp dialogue in Tarantino films from time to time, too. But His Girl Friday is relentless and wonderful.
    6. askcherlock
      Classy choices!
  13. Stillthinking
I am going with the movies I can watch over and over, rather than movies that I think were the best ever made.

    1. Groundhog Day
    2. Emma
    3. Garden State
    4. The Haunting (b/w)
    5. All About Eve
    1. askcherlock
Just ordered Three Faces of Eve. Anyone seen it?
    2. educatedvagabond
I love All About Eve! Bettie Davis is the greatest! Best line ever: Fasten your seat belts, it's going to be a bumpy night!
    3. aningeniousname
I just watched All about Eve for the first time the other night and it was brilliant, love Bette Davis.

I liked Back to the Future 1 and loooved Pulp Fiction.
  15. MidwestMom
Since you asked 5, here they are are in no particular order.

    Twelve Angry Men
    Dr. Zhivago
    Papillon
Now, Voyager (Claude Raines and Bette Davis. If you haven't seen it, do.)

and because of the story and the sweeping geography,
    Dances with Wolves
    1. Stillthinking
OMG! I love, love, love Now, Voyager! I think it's one of the most romantic movies I have ever seen.

"Don't lets ask for the moon, we have the stars!"
    2. MidwestMom
I love the complexity of the story, that the ending doesn't tie up nicely. Life and love are so often about compromise.
  16. claudiorodval
    1. Paprika
    2. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
    3. Waking Life
    4. Amelie
    5. Mulholland Drive

extra: (Blair Witch Project 1 and Donnie Darko)
    1. askcherlock
I haven't seen any of these yet! Now you have my curiousity going. Which one first...?
    2. educatedvagabond
Waking Life! Seriously, watch Waking Life first!

A friend showed it to me in high school, you will never look at a clock the same way again!
  17. marktmarket
    Ripley's Game
    Glengary Glenross
    Dark Knight
    Godfather trilogy
    25th Hour
    1. Stillthinking
Really, you liked Ripley's Game better than The Talented Mr. Ripley? I thought "Talented" was haunting and disturbing.
    2. marktmarket
Actually I liked the entire series. Ripley Underground which happened in between was direct to video and starred Barry Pepper. Check it out too. I think Matt Damon, Barry Pepper, and John Malkovich all did Ripley's character justice on screen--and the different actors were good in bringing out Ripley's varying tastes as he grew older.
    3. askcherlock
I'm happy to see that someone else liked Glengary Glenross. Great acting. You folks have made me want to check out Ripley's Game.
    4. askcherlock
Because of these replies, we ordered and watched The Talented Mr. Ripley. It was excellent! Now we have to try the others.
  18. Frosty78
    Office Space
    Slingblade
    Silence of the Lambs
    Dead Man Walking
    Rain Man

Much of Silence of the Lambs was filmed here in Pittsburgh. Anthony Hopkins was chilling. Also loved Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man.

We just watched Godfather 1 again and enjoyed it as much as the first time we saw it. Canoli, anyone?
  24. Floormodel
is no set order and subject to chage:

    1. 2001: A Space Odyssey
    2. Rear Window
    3. Citizen Kane
    4. Dogma
    5. One Flew Over The cuckoo's Nest
    1. educatedvagabond
So, you really love Citizen Kane? I used to live with a bunch of film students and they were all forced to watch it for class. You've never heard such complaining! I tried to remind them they were watching a movie for homework but all of them kept going on about how it was a supposed "classic" but they couldn't stand it. I don't really have an opinion on it.

Why do you love Citizen Kane?
  25. askcherlock
Cuckoo's Nest was maybe Nicholson's finest film. I saw 2001 twice. The first time I "watched it" I kinda was feelin' good so we all stayed and saw it again. Sins of my youth! Loved Dogma too...
  26. DramaQueenGK
    1. The Godfather 1 & 2
    2. Save the Tiger
    3. The Heiress
    4 Some Like it Hot
    5. 12 Angry Men (thr original)

There are 3 more favorites but you only asked for th top 5
    1. askcherlock
Please add them! Great top 5 so please go on.

    To Kill a Mockingbird

The Godfather I & II (GF III was the worst movie ever made)

    Gone With the Wind

    On the Waterfront

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

    {P.S. I am greatly disturbed by anyone who lumps that litter box of a movie, Godfather III, in with Godfather's I & 2. What were you watching?}
    1. askcherlock
Excellent, all--and I agree that GF 3 was awful.
    2. DramaQueenGK
While The Godfather I & II are my all time favorite movies, I have to say that like you I think sequel III is way off base. Sometimes Hollywood has to stop making sequel after sequel and quit while they're ahead.
And I also agree One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is right up there with the best of them. Too bad we only had 5 choices.
  29. educatedvagabond
Ooo! I love Top Five lists!

    1. The Boondock Saints
    2. American Psycho
    3. Caffeine
    4. Death Proof
    5. Lucky Number Slevin
    1. askcherlock
I thought I knew a lot of films, but you sure seem like an expert. Start me off with the best one here, since I've not seen any of them.
    2. educatedvagabond
Boondock Saints is my favorite. I've seen it god knows how many times and it never gets old. But I recommend all of them on my list.
  30. aasaste
Taxi Driver: Dark De Niro in on i all so think this is best flim
    1. askcherlock
I love dark films. Not quite sure what that says about me. I especially like them with De Niro and just watched Hide and Seek. It was dark with a twist. Taxi Driver is one of the best.
  31. askcherlock
Looks like Waking Life will be my next request! Going to the queue now....
  32. DramaQueenGK
I agree with you ASKCHERLOCK, I think Taxi Driver was DeNiro's best and loved Hida and Seek. Never saw the ending coming. Total suprise.
  33. Shaunalynn1976
    The Godfather 1&2
    Scarface
    An officer and a gentleman
    Dirty Dancing
    Heat
    I loooove Pacino and DeNiro!!
  34. satijournal
Off the top of my head, here's four:

    Jacob's Ladder
    Cutter's Way
    Raging Bull
    Matewan
  35. askcherlock
Jacob's Ladder with Tim Robbins, right? Terrific film and I am glad you reminded me of it. Raging Bull---another De Niro classic and so compelling.
  36. LGramlich
    Raiders of the Lost Ark
    The Corporation
    Saw
Monty Python & the Holy Grail
    Amelie
    1. aningeniousname
Oh god I hate Amelie soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much, it's my girlfriend's favourite film. First time I saw it I didn't like it, second time I really didn't like it, tenth time I have really started to hate it with a passion I had previously reserved for Manchester utd, Carling lager and Marzipan.
    2. LGramlich
aningeniousname; To each their own, of course. It came along in my life just when I needed it.
    3. aningeniousname
No I can see why people would like it but something about it just winds me up intensely. As you say to each their own, I think a lot of people would pick it as a favourite.
