I find that visitors from twitter stay longer on my blog than those that arrive from some other sources. I checked my stats earlier and found that the average time they stay on my page is about 380% of my site average.

Hey! I checked out your site and it looks AMAZING! It's too bad that your blog can't really relate to me, since I'm only a high school student :P.

Question, what exactly is Twitter? Is it similar to Facebook?

I agree on Twitter, also fun for getting to know people. Beyond that, I'm using:

    • various features of Blog Catalog and MyBlogLog

    • social media

    • commenting around town

That's about it right now. I'm subscribing to this thread to get more tips.

visiting blogs, leaving comments, I try to avoid blank clicks. I like traffic that stays and reads.
  5. Majik
I've found that the best way to create traffic is to just jump into discussions on forums. Just staying active in forums will bring traffic to your page, at least from my experience.
  6. wehireu
Twitter is fun to play with. It will get you traffic, but more importantly, I enjoy doing it. The same is true of Blogcatalog.

I agree with your top five. I have another question though - I am getting a good amount of traffic but I am having trouble getting clicks on ads. I have tried different layouts, different colors and different locations. Nothing works. Do you have any suggestions?

    Thanks.
    1. Majik
I've heard that advertising with Google Adword will bring the kind of people to your page that are more likely to click on you ads. I've never tried it, but I might in the near future.

I don't get very much traffic, so I'm all ears...

All of the above, plus submitting posts to Stumble Upon, Reddit, and other such sites. If no one knows about your post, no one will come to read it.
    1. jmanguba
      Very true :).
One question, I tried signing up on Stumbleupon, but when i click 'Join' the page never loads... is the site under maintenance or something along the lines of that? Or is it just my comp? It's okay if you don't know, just wondering.

#3 is really crucial if you are a "real person" wanting to make a brand in the blogosphere. Not as crucial for MMOL schemes which I see a LOT of of on BC. Not judging mind you. There is no shortcut to being a trusted voice on the internet.
  14. AnnStorer
Twitter is effective and strangely addictive. I didn't understand the appeal when I signed up for it, but now I find myself checking it whenever I'm bored.

I get people from Twitter, Flickr, blog catalog, comments I've left on others' blogs, and from VectorTuts since one of my freebies was featured there. Oh, and DeviantArt had been good for me, too. I pretty much only network on sites I've been following and enjoying for a long time anyway.
  15. BloggingSociety
That all are right. There are so many social bookmarking in the net. Use the most well known only, so u will get more traffic.

And I agree with TWITTER, BlogCatalog, like we use right now.
And Marketing your blog into the forum.

For long-term traffic, keep in mind the searches you do on Google that don't yield helpful results. Those can be keys to creating seo friendly posts with those keywords. I have a list I keep and add to regularly. For example, I've been trying to get my 1 year old daughter to go to sleep on her own and found nothing relevant for "My one year old won't go to sleep." I will write a post on it with that as a title and/or keyword.
  17. gearsofrock
Provide good and useful content that is specific to a certain subject area.
  18. denoblee
There is 'no short cut' being a trusted voice on the internet.Make sure that dish quality information not minding where and how you did that. This could be in forums, blog and article comments, articles etc.

This no only builds traffic to your web pages over time but also brands as the 'quy to go to'.
    1. rileycentral
      Very well put.

i'm new to all this and I hope someone doesn't mind my ignorant question but how does twitter compliment my blog?
  23. rileycentral
This guy presents a really clear case, for me anyway, of how social media like Twitter and others contribute to your business as a blogger:

I especially like the "personal blog" link in the chain as he paints its value,
