At family get-togethers, our family loves to play cards.

I remember sitting around a large dining room table as my parents, aunts and uncles would play pinochle or bridge.

Now that I have a family of my own, we choose pinochle most often. But we also play Scopa and Gin Rummy. When I lived with a family in Germany, Canasta was the game of choice.

What is your favorite card game? When do you play and with whom?

    My kids and I love Skip-Bo and Uno.

      We used to sit in our neighbor's basement on a rainy day (6 kids in my family, 5 kids in theirs) and play round after round of Uno. That's a good memory.

    Uno, golf, some game I can't for the life of me name right now but it involves levels where you are dealt 11 cards and have to get 3 of a kind and 4 card runs in different series.

      Gin rummy?

    When I was in high school (pre drinking games) we would get a big group together to play Bull$hit -- where you completely deal out a few decks of cards to 8-10 players, and each person has to throw into the pot sets of 2 or more cards. If you bluff and put in cards that don't match, other players can call you on it by calling out 'BS!' If you were in fact bluffing, you'd have to take the whole pot. If not, your accuser would. The goal was to be the first to get rid of all your cards.

      I tried to teach my son King's corner, but he had no patience for it. War is a great first card game for kids, tho. Thanks, Holly!

    I never play cards anymore, though they used to be a big part of my life. As a kid, canasta, casino, steal the old man's bundle, draw poker, rummy, solitaire were the big favorites. Later on, pinochle, gin rummy, seven card stud, high-low. High-low is my absolute favorite. After my daughter was born, uno got thrown into the mix.

      Your comment on "favorite quotes" inspired this OP, by the way.
    2. nothingprofound
      I'll give Cervantes all the credit. That, by the way, is my wife's favorite quote.
    3. MidwestMom

    Variations of solitaire card games and a little of Baraja (old Spanish card game)
    1. MidwestMom
      Isn't Baraja played with a 48-card deck? We play scopa with a different type of deck also... but we can modify an Anglo 52-card deck to play the game too.

    f the dealer, circle of death, high low, cops and robbers, horse race, and of course go fish. I usually play these with a bunch of people I have never met

    I play cards both online and offline such as blackjack, poker, canasta, tri-peaks solitaire, regular solitaire, rummy, hearts, spider solitaire, free cell, and uno. They're all my favourites. I play card games with online people and friends and family.

      I like to play Solitarie too or liked, I haven't played in a while.

    Although not as much anymore, I have been playing Magic the Gathering all of my adult life. At times I love it --- at times I hate it. But it seems to have always been a constant in my life.
    1. MidwestMom
      My brothers played that when they were growing up. They started once I was already in college, so I never got into it. But thanks for thinking about it and coming up with a new and different game to suggest.

      Isn't it amazing how something as simple as a game can be a steadying factor in your life?

    Its all about the Poker ALL IN!
    1. MidwestMom
      My brother in law has a poker night at his place once a month -- guys only. (So, you can imagine...) He has his garage set up with
      a)ALL his huntin' trophies
      b)a fridge dedicated *solely* to beer
      c)a brand new bathroom that is completely hands free. Even auto-flush urinal.

      and

      d) a wife who is willing to leave him and his buddies be.

      It works out just fine. His group plays Texas Hold'em and Hi-lo.

    Hand and Foot - really easy, a bit of strategy and addictive.

    I'll Buy That - REALLY competitive and we've been known to call each other names and slap each other's hands LOL

    Gin - Hollywood style.
    1. MidwestMom
      We play hand and foot, too! It's such a great game for when you're more into visiting than strategy. It's my husband's parents alternative to pinochle.
  21. Agit8r
    When my parents visit, we play one or more of: Hearts, Pinochle, Spades, or Preachers Bridge (similar to Spades).
    1. MidwestMom
      I can just imagine the gnome family happily gathering to play cards. Heart warming, really. [and only a little creepy]

  22. newblogmogul
    When we have any family gatherings we play speed, spades and uno.
  23. marcusmarcus

    Cribbage and Golf

    Golf is like this:

    9 cards dealt to each player... DO NOT LOOK AT THEM

    Make 3 rows of three - FACE DOWN
    placing 3 cards on top row
    3 cards middle row
    3 cards bottom row

    First person draws from the deck - and decides whether they want to keep the card or discard the card.

    IF they keep the card, they have to change it out with one of their own 9 cards and place their OWN card Face up on the discard pile.

    Play goes to next player - and so on.

    Object of the game is to get the LOWEST POINTS BEFORE ONE person goes out by having ALL of their 9 cards face up.

    Here's how to score the cards:

    Joker = NEGATIVE 10
    A = 1
    K = 0
    Q = negative 5
    J = 10
    10 = 10
    9 = 9
    8 = 8

    The ways to make your card pile = 0 or lower:

    If you can make ROWS of 3 of the SAME NUMBER card (As, 10s, 9s,etc. Then the ROW becomes ZERO points --- rows can go up or down - but NOT kitty korner.

    If you do not complete a row of 3 of the same cards then you have to count the cards into your points.

    Qs, Kings and Jokers are AWESOME cards.

    YOU CAN trade out cards that are already FACE UP - to make them lower in point value - or if someone else has gotten the cards you need to complete the row - or if you just want to.

    First person to have ALL of their cards face up - is the GAME stopper - and then EVERYONE counts their scores left over...

    Then scores are written down.

    Decide what SCORE level you want BEFORE you start - for example we play:

    Whoever reaches NEGATIVE 100 first WiNS - Whoever reaches POSITIVE 100 first Loses...

    But you can make up your own rules...

    You can play with ONE deck but it is more fun when you play with 2 decks or more.

    REMEMBER - INCLUDE THE JOKERS in the game cards.

    If you run out of deal cards - then shuffle them and continue on.

    This game is totally addicting.

    I love to play poker. But I've also played hearts, spades, pinochle and hundreds of other games with cards.
