A few local things I have been involved in that are probably in your area, too:

Family Advocacy Centers that offer safe houses, clothing etc. for abused women and children.

Work Wear: Collect business attire and work-appropriate clothing for women and men in need to wear to job interviews, temp jobs, etc.

Pets, Too: supply food and supplies for the pets of people who have suffered losses such as house fires, tonadoes, etc.

Veteran's Administration Clinics, centers, and VFW chapters are always in need of books, especially Westerns and thrillers.

Some animal shelters collect shredded paper for use in beddings, etc.

I like the Chicken Soup Brigade. They're a group that brings food and necessities to people suffering from AIDS related illnesses.

I also like the Northwest Adoption Exchange, that helps kids with special needs in the foster care system find forever families.

Anyone who's overseas, living in a grass hut or broken down villa someplace in a 3rd world doing missions or other outreach program deserves my highest regard.

Those folks give up everything to help others.... it's no part time commitment...

kiva.org is a great organization too.

Though personally, I would love to contribute to organizations that fight Cancer. It is a pity that diseases such as Cancer are still around without a 100% cure. I know we will get there.

For what you describe, I strongly recommend modestneeds.com The organization gives money in small grants to the working poor to accomplish short-term goals like getting a car fixed in order to keep a job or paying an unexpected medical bill...most grants are only a few hundred dollars, but make the difference in whether or not a family is able to keep going or is derailed by some relatively minor crisis they simply don't have the cushion to absorb. Because each individual grant is so small, even donations of $5 or $10 quickly add up to a concrete result for real people.

A local childrens' hospital fundraiser is my favorite. The community has contributed over $12.4 million in the past 20 years.

I need ideas for a weekly feature on lesser known charities, advocacy groups, causes etc...
I want to do more "independent" kinds of causes and things that anyone can contribute to or get involved in without having to take a class, or make huge financial donations.
