Chicago.
It's a large city--not quite as large as New York, but still one of the largest in the country and culturally diverse. But, unlike New York, it is in the midwest--a large urban area smack in the middle of the "heartland". You will see history, art, noted museums, etc.; parks, outdoor festivals and city life; small ethnic-centered neighborhoods where mom-and-pop stores and restaurants predominate and languages other than English are the norm; a huge and bustling business center and a busy blue-collar industry all in one place. I can't think of any place in the United States where you would get as broad a spectrum of U.S. people, places and lifestyles--and you'd only have to travel about 90 miles to find rural midwestern life. -
If you like music, it's hard to beat New Orleans for dixieland jazz, Memphis for Blues or Nashville for country music. Could you be more specific as to what you are looking for in the way of food, entertainment or sightseeing opportunities?

Boston is the Bomb
The Museums, the Colleges, the Boston Common, the Fenway, baseball games, The Fleet Center
for basketball games, Newbury Street shopping center of small businesses. Faneuil Hall,
historic and marketplace shopping center.
Boston is a great little city that you can literally walk all the way through to get around
and enjoy without having to take a taxi everywhere you go. There's enough here to see and enjoy.
I've been to Chicago and like it there to but it's very windy there, other than that I love Chicago
and New York but you need a taxi to get around in both these cities. -
New York is pretty awesome, but im surprised nobody has mention Miami. Especially if you are from a cold climate, now is the best time to visit there.
-
New York is dirty and too big. Go to the Pacific Northwest, where there is fresh air, and way nicer people.

If you can't afford those other big cities, you can always come to Albuquerque. New Mexico, that is. It really is part of the U.S.
And we've been having lots of sunshine this winter!-
Here's a Google search of Albuquerque pictures ~

New Orleans, especially during Mardi Gras or Jazz Fest, is a great experience. The "Big Easy" is full of multi-cultural history, has tons of affordable activities, wonderful food and good times. New Orleans is a major center for music; it is the birthplace of Jazz. A sweet blend of European, African and Latin American sounds along with Cajun, Zydeco and Delta Blues can be found in the numerous clubs, bars, etc.
I am heading there in April for Jazz Fest, 10 days full of incredible music. Of the hundreds of acts performing, this year's line up includes Aretha Franklin, Joe Cocker, Dave Matthews, Tony Bennett and Dr. John. Here's a link: www.nojazzfest.com/ -
Denver, Co.
We were just voted the best city in America to live in, obviously that means we are the best to visit as well. :-)
Where you go depends upon what kind of experience you are looking for. -
Methuen MA- its a stones throw from everything, and it's like going back in time. It looks almost the same as it did in the 1800's and has been beautifully maintained. It is one of the few places where 99% of the people still make eye contact and say hi, you can leave your car unlocked, and if you get lost people will line up to help you find your way, but not without feeding you and "getting you in out of the cold to get a nice cup of coffee" first.
Look how pretty www.cityofmethuen.net/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=110... -
ok, how about San Francisco, California you can ride the cable car thingy, if you've been bad you can goto Alcatraz, you can visit the famous bridge, they have lots of fun bars to goto and its just a fun place to be.

San Francisco is definitely amazing. I grew up there so I hate Cable Cars and wish they would get them off the darned roads. Also never understood the appeal of Alcatraz, LOL... but culturally, SF is a great city with stunning architecture, wide varieties of foods and events, and of course the Golden Gate Bridge is the most photographed structure in the world. Also have the world's largest all-digital Planetarium, zoos and museums, earthquake and gold rush history, incredible night-life... and a short drive north has the best of all: giant redwood trees. They are truly a sight to behold

New York City no doubt. You have everything in NYC that you have in every other city in this country. Wait until the summer though when the weather is warmer.
If anything just go for the food alone. We have the best pizza places in the country here. Pizza was first sold in NYC.
Every food from every culture you can find here. Not on Long Island where I live now, but in NYC you can eat something different every day.
NYC has the nicest people in the country. Don't believe what you hear about not being friendly. Yeah, most people won't take anything and be direct with you, but that does not mean unfriendly people. -
NYC and Las Vegas. Not just for the gambling in Vegas I hear there is really nice things to see, want to go. Then you can take a helicopter ride with a glass floor into the grand canyon
NYC I know is a nice experience it is dirty in spots but it is an experience. Used to be there a few times a week. -

Arnous, go over here:
travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-191501980-new_york_city_vacations-i;_ylt=Atj...
Yahoo has a great guide on best places to visit in NYC. Any other city in world also. People who visit rate the best places to stay and eat at and so on.
You can just print out places in the city to visit and plan a vacation. -
I would choose New York if you have the time, I lived there for 4 yeas and I still miss it,but it is rather large so if you are only there for a few days you will have to prioritize what you want to see. It is actually a much safer city than most already mentioned and though it is dirty it is the dirt of history urbanity and mass humanity.
I am more frightened in D.C. than I ever was in New York, though D.C. is a good small city if you want specifically to see some great historical museums, they also have theaters and good restaurant and if you are on a time limit you will see more o the city than you would NY. -
-
It really doesn't matter what city you choose to visit. Today you will find a lot of diversity. If you go this time of year, it's best to go to one in California or Florida because the weather is better right now. But keep in mind that most people consider California another country because so many of us are strange.

If I could only visit one city, i'd make one as small as possible.
I've had much more rewarding experiences visiting smaller towns than I have visiting the big ones. Quite frankly, there isn't much difference between New York and London, or Sydney as far as experiences go.
If you want a real experience, hit the smaller places.-
It's interesting how people see things so differently, having lived in NY for 4 years, and having grown up in Australia my father having done engineering an architectural work in Sydney, and having been to London a lot as a kid and spending 6 weeks there freshman year of college I couldn't but find them more different.
-
Ok I thought about what I want:
Nice weather
Good food
Cool Events
Friendly non-judgemental people
Interesting things to see.Im keeping this general.
Anything that combines all 5 would be good for me. -
What about New Orleans? (I've never been there). Have you read 'Interview with the Vampire' by Anne Rice or seen the film? (Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt). The book was great and made me want to go there.
-
Come to DC. You'll be able to see much more of it than New York City. It's a very pretty city, there's lots of history here. It's one of the country's most walkable cities; anyplace you can't walk to there's train and bus. Our museums are free, we have every type of food NYC has, plus the White House and the Capital, and we have theater to see at the Kennedy Center and the National Theater.
