I suspect that most people prefer diamonds because of the prestige factor, but like everything else it's a matter of personal preference. I favor emeralds.

Many people do like diamonds alot, but I'm meeting more and more people who are not impressed and avoid diamonds for anything other than accent stones. If you think about it, diamonds command $$ and prestige, but really only because DeBeers regulates the market to ensure that. Diamonds are not that rare. Not as rare as emeralds and many other colored stones.
BTW, some other stones I find interesting are Ametrines (Citrine/Amethyst), paraiba tourmaline, and rubies. I'm supposed to get some pigeon-blood rubies from Afghanistan soon that I'm quite interested in seeing. -

I think everyone's different, but diamonds do seem to be more popular. I never wear jewllery, so I say none, LOL

I won't wear a pretty baubles on my body that symbolizes someone elses poverty and I resent that the question is aimed solely at women when men participate in this vulgar body decoration as well.

I'm not sure how wearing jewelry represents someone else's poverty when, if you look back, native tribes on every continent adorned themselves with pretty baubles....it's natural to decorate yourself....rich or impoverished....you can wear jewels that are not gotten from created poverty for others....I don't wear a lot of jewelry, so I am not speaking as someone who owns them, I don't have much, I just don't know how you can berate people for having jewelry as being party to creating poverty.

@Keyster There is no denying that when it comes to exchange gem stones cause human misery...have you never heard of a blood diamond?
@MadameX It is not a waste of energy to call out sexism when you see it. To sit silently when someone says something essentialist is to agree that said statement is true. It is the daily small slights that we turn away from that help form the basis of patriarchal power. -

Whichever one the ring machine in front of the food store gives me for my quarter. I'm just that smooth, no price is too expensive for my woman.

It's great man, but make sure you take it out of the plastic egg before giving it to your woman. Trust me, it works. She'll be begging for it all night long, begging! You'll have to call out of work for the next two weeks, it's that good. Make sure you stock up on ice packs and ace bandages before giving her the present.

One of my biggest surprises on moving to South Africa was the dearth of coloured gemstones in the jewellery stores! You can find diamonds anywhere, of course, and the only other stone in ample supply here is tanzanite. Virtually all jewellery stores, especially the upmarket ones, have an entire display window devoted to tanzanite jewellery. My favourite stone is the aquamarine, my birthstone. My husband gave me a beautiful aqua-and-diamond ring last year and I wear it every day.
Diamond mining is a significant source of employment here in a country that has an unemployment rate of about 30%. The industry that adorns us with pretty sparklies is also responsible for putting food into the mouths of thousands upon thousands of children here.
As far as the allegation of sexism, you need only look in a jewellery store window to see where the market for gemstones is: if men wore the lion's share of the jewels, surely the windows would have more than 10 pieces of men's jewellery (outside of wedding rings) on display? I'm an old bird who was among the original feminists and I very happily accept and wear the gifts my husband gives me, including gifts of beautiful jewellery. It saddens me when people twist feminism into a tool to bludgeon others with their own particular sour-grapes agenda. They're just pretty rocks stuck on shiny metal and the industry that creates them (and people like me who buy them) provide employment for thousands who might otherwise go hungry. -

Womens like most bright colors like pink, red, and crystal clear.
Colorful gemstones are just anybody's dream to have. Their natural colors more than match your very fashionable dresses. Their sheer range could strike you spell bound.
