I've been hearing alot of people trashing 2008, saying that it was a bad year, miserable, and yeah, i'll admit that it had it's bad moments, but didn't anybody learn ANYTHING? I mean, as humans that's what I thought we were supposed to do.. Learn from our experiences, hold on to the good, grow from the bad?
I learned alot from 2008.
I learned to be trusting but to be careful who I trust with what. I learned to love unconditionally. I learned to say what I need to say, then "Move along, move along like I know you do," as the All American Rejects sang, because everybody knows you can't change the past. "Kiss the ones you love goodbye,"--Anberlin. Take the most of every moment, embrace the good times, and live while you can because for every bad time in 2008, there were good moments: singing in the car as you drove down the freeway--nothing to worry about, you stood beneath the stars as the wind sifted through your fingers and you knew that you were fine because right then, where you were, was good. I learned to not sweat the small stuff. I embraced my desire to affect the lives of those around me. I learned that it is amazingly important to stand up for what you believe in, to have your own opinions, because when you do that you're fighting for something, and when you're fighting for something you believe in, well, i dont' know when you're more alive. Bind up the broken hearted. Rock like there's no tomorrow. Realize that this crazy old world we live in isn't going to last forever and neither are we. Make the most of every opprotunity.
So tell me.

I learned to never take 4 science classes during one semester. And that politics is cool. Also, I learned a great deal of CSS stuff. I also learned more about social networking and that it really isn't just for nerds who have no social life. I also learned that I picked the right career field to want to go into (research, biology particularly marine sciences). I also learned that my life rocks.

I learned that all the standard things medical staff say to patients when something bad happens "everything happens for a reason", "these things happen" and especially "sorry for your loss" made me indescribably furious. I vow to never say any of those phrases when I graduate.

I think it would depend on the personality of the person I'm speaking to and I'd have to gauge my words to suit the situation and occasion. Some people expect to hear those things, although other people have said that it made it worse when they were trying to hold it together. I found that someone who actually makes the effort to listen and a comforting gesture like a touch on the hand or shoulder made a world of difference to me.

That some people just aren't worth the hassle. And that working hard will get you long term results.

Two things.
I learned that sometimes what hurts the most was worth having for a little while.
Is it better to have loved and lost... I still don't know but it's a wonderful memory to have.
And then later in the year I learned that sometimes I don't know what's been missing in my life until it enters my life. My granddaughter born in September. -
I learned that I was over extended and coming close to a social media meltdown. I decided that I needed to do a lot of "pruning" and then become a better time manager in 2009.

I learned that life is really unfair. No matter how hard you pursue something, if it's not for you then it isn't. See, I had my board exam last June and sadly not all of us in our friendship circle passed. As I have observed, those who didn't make it are the ones who really studied, while on the other hand I was taking everything light during review classes. I didn't even care if I pass or not. But I passed.
