My father just handed me the Sunday Parade magazine and they show a small article called "Going Hungry in America."
The statistics are alarming with 12% of the U.S. population, and 17% of our children not having enough food. It also cites the raising price of bread (up 15% over last year) and milk (also up 13% over this time last year). Yikes!
What caught my eye in particular was this:
"... in Florida, 11-year-old Jack Davis proposed a bill, recently signed into law, that makes it easier for restaurants to donate leftover food to homeless shelters. His law could be a model for other states."
WOW... 11 years old! This kid is truly to be admired!!
What do you admire??

I have a friend that, at one time, was the top civil lawyer in his county. The reason I admire him is that he did so much pro bono work for people that were desperate and couldn't afford a lawyer.
He also owned numerous rental properties that he hired me to fix up. He went way above and beyond (Sometimes losing money) to make sure that the properties were well kept. Personally, I thought it was a waste of money for the amount of rent he charged but he wanted to give people nicer homes than their income allowed.
It's those people that look for a need and fill it that I admire. -
I admire any child or adult that gives of themselves freely without strings.
Now, the children going hungry thing... I feel I must hit on this subject since I live below the poverty level. In America our government gives food stamps. Some people say it's not enough, I diagree. We get nearly $400 a month. I have an entire shelf full of food that lasts well beyond 2 months. I have been in this position for 4 years and the one thing I've noticed about people in poverty is that they, even in a credit card type thing, will exchange it for illegal substances. Not all but a good portion of them do. Some take baby formula from WIC in exchange for substances. It's not all the fault of the government parents are invovled too.
Smart shopping should be taught to theese families. A lot of them are too lazy to bag their own food so they go to designer grocery stores that charge triple what you would get bagging your own stuff. Just something to think about... -
Your story about the 11 year old reminded me of a post I did about a 12 year old boy who started a program where he gave donated laptops to kids living in poverty. Quite admirable, especially for someone so young!

I admire doctors without borders. I especially admire the Canadian doctors who are treating the American vets and their families who are here. I admire all the people for a healthy community types, who administer to our local feed the hungry program, teach folks how to grow and preserve food, distribute the food to anyone who needs it and, make sure that free budget and debt counseling is available.

I admire brave men and women who stand up and put their neck on the line for freedom. At the moment, antifascists in Russia and Eastern Europe are having a hard fight with neo-Nazis in cahoots with local police, who often recieve paramilitary training. Just recently a couple got banged up and another got stabbed.

I admire my 5 year old great nephew who has a mild case of cerebal palsy (cannot run but walks gingerly) and his interaction with a 9 year old downs syndrome child. Both at play was just an absolute joy to watch! Such interaction, laughter, and love between the two.
