You are in front of your computer, but the net is not available and you can't browse. What do you do? Painting, programming, typing for next post, switch it off or what else?

I'm not sure. Deprivation of the internet leads to some sort of psychosis. When I reconnect with the internet I have no recollection of what happened in the interim.

To the literally-minded among you: just kidding!

stoneman's right. it creates a fugue state which the person experiencing can never describe to someone else.

actually, i can't remember this happening without losing power completely. however, i do use photoshop, illustrator and indesign a lot ... flash ... i don't have many games on here.

or, i shut the computer down completely and draw freehand for a while (not the old macromedia program, either).

I beat my kids. And stuff.

(thought I should mention, just kidding, too!)

I write my posts in advance so when the net is not working I try to pull pages offline and write about new software and application and get them already so the next day all I have to do is copy and paste.

I dont play games on the computer a whole lot, so if the net is down and I dont have anything to write about I am usually not on the computer. Cant imagine life without internet anymore, thats just crazy. I wonder at times how people even lived without it!

I do quite a lot of things on my computer that don't require an internet connection: write (Word); manage data in Access; do statistical analyses of research data with SPSS.

    And games. Mahjong, for instance.

Cry, cry some more and then write posts
I went through two months of no connection at home, it was Hell!
  8. monkeytale
I have about 2 dozen blog posts in various stages in Word that I would play with/update if that were to happen. I honestly can't remember the last time I couldn't get on the net though unless the power went out here.

      Oh! That's wonderful!!
  10. clioandme
To borrow (loosely) a phrase from Ender, MS Word is of the devil.

Practice my selective hearing on my wife.
  12. MeghnaK
Oh! I simply switch off the computer and sit peacefully to play a game of chess or to read one of my favorite books.
    1. monkeytale
      That's always a good alternative.

I have a lot of things that get changed locally and uploaded later so I just keep working ont the lcoal copyand keep track of what needs to be uploaded when the net comes back to life. I can also read e-mail affoline and respnod. The responses get sent when the connection comes back.
    1. MeghnaK
That looks to be very useful.

I used to be able to keep working on the computer, and I will if I have to, but I prefer to have access to a variety of online resources for reference.
  20. PGWake
If my internet was not working I would be on the phone to them asking why.

I pay for 24/7 access and expect to get it

Thanks for this opportunity to reflect. The responses to your question are educating, entertaining, and making all of us think (at least when computer fails to do the thinking job).

Think of a moment when we are out of the synchronous life-style, when the computer fails to boot, when the ISP says sorry, when the domain becomes invisible, and then we start looking around. This moment is not from the classic 1984, nor a piece of science fiction.

It has happened quite a few times, in the recent past. More so in the Western hemisphere (eastern hemisphere is / was and will be used to power-out, and power-cut).

One of my blog post (was on what if the Internet is gone (read: Dead), and people go back to libraries to read the print): What do you do when the internet is down? posted on Tuesday, July 24, 2007 @ lisindica.blogspot.com

No network forces me to get away from the computer and do some crafting. That way I actually have a new craft project to blog about when the network comes back up...
  25. Anniepooh
Work. I write or edit photos.
  26. drjay1966
I get work done. Actually, I often work in a coffee shop nearby where there isn't access, which I see as a plus (though, admittedly, sometimes I'll sit by the window and pick up signals from the neighborhood)
    1. drjay1966
As a followup to that, I've actually been planning on taking my laptop into the next room where there's no internet access to get some work done for an hour now...
    2. drjay1966
      Still here....
    3. drjay1966
      sigh...

Solitaire. And it eats away at my sanity.
  28. ChicaX
If it's not turned off from my utter frustration at not being connected (its true) then I'm editing my photography.
  29. SweetViolet
    Blog.

Design (am working on a brochure for a dietician and reworking a website for a friend right now). I have battery backup.

    Quilt.

    Embroider.

Watch my soaps (recorded for convenience)

    Read a book

    Harass my husband

    Play with my dogs

    Cook

...the internet goes down a lot here...so does the power. I have to have a lot of alternative things to do or I'll go mad with frustration and boredom!
  30. mantiz
    i play counter-strike
  31. jackpayne
No internet? That can throw your belief system into a state of prolonged levitation.
  32. fstasu
I write, work on graphics, or go for a drive.

Better question, what did we all do before we had the internet?
  33. LGramlich
I work on my journal (there are tons of dreams to be examined there,) paint, sit on the deck & relax, go for a hike (if it's not raining, which is the primary cause for my loss of 'net,) do chores around the house...Lots of different things. Guess I'm not a 'net addict.
  34. runup
If net is not available and I can't browse, typing for next post.....
  35. kdawg68
I fire up a PC game:

    -Medieval Total War
    -Medieval Total War 2
    -Rome: Total War
-Take Command: Battle of 2nd Manassas
    -Hearts of Iron 2: Doomsday
    -Panzer General (the original)
    -Civilization IV

It's endlessly more fascinating than arranging pictures.
  36. Onlineguru
Go to the Gym...that's why sometimes there should be no connectivity
