Personally, since it's a relatively new site, a good 40-50% of my traffic comes in through Digg. Most of the others come in through forums/searches.

Sure, I'll trade links with you-

If you really want to get traffic ... get StumbleUpOn ..

You can check out more about manipulating traffic with StumbleUpOn and alexa traffic ranking.

They say social networking sites are all the rage, but I had a few thoughts about this. We're all trying to drive traffic to our own sites, but what about those people outside the blogging communities?

So, I started submitting articles to different sites. This seems to increase my traffic by 200% or more. Although I'm told it takes a few months before people really start to use your articles on their site.

My next goal is to become a solid member of a forum which focuses on my niche.

I think it might actually hurt people in the end when they try every traffic building tip that comes along. I have been taking a method one at a time and building a solid foundation with it before moving on. This methodology has increased my traffic more than I ever thought possible.

      Thanks! Very good points.

      One more:

A fairly common theme in SEO articles (the ones that don't recommend slathering your metatags with naughty words, anyway) is that the major search engines are getting better and better at detecting links that are not relevant to the content of the page(s).

In other words, link farms probably don't work as well as they used to.

Also, link sharing without shared topics may not be as good an idea as it seems.

I am thinking of article sites. That might generate log of traffice except forums.

social is not the major. Most important is the content of your blog.

The best way to get quality traffic is to write a good blog. This will give you sustainable traffic, which I assume is what most people want.
    1. clioandme
A lot of people just want somebody, anybody to click on their ads. Still, there are also a ton of people with your attitude. Thank goodness.
  9. sanktjohanser
I was gonna say try netwroking with people in your niche... but uh... I have no clue what your niche would be.

What cooper said - keep writing the way you are and you will generate the kind of readership you're looking for.

and when that doesn't work, beg.
  13. Norski
This will sound corny, but: I write reasonably tight copy that stays focused on a topic.

I submit to DMOZ, and several of the major search engines (starting with Google).

And, I don't get too fancy with site navigation. There's a text navigation bar on nearly all of my pages, generally at the bottom of the page: Good for search engines to follow, good for those people who don't have javascript and/or don't load graphics. Folks who depend of text-reading software probably don't mind, either.
    1. ThriftShopRomantic
Norski, have you gotten any response from DMOZ? I submitted to them last September, and there wasn't a word. Then their submission forms were taken down.
    2. n8
DMOZ takes fooorever to get listed on. It's a good idea to bookmark the category you submitted to and go back and see if your link is there. Since it's human run it tends to take a long time. I don't think there's any set pattern. It's taken up to 4 months to get some of my sites listed.

Since last September huh? I would look at resubmitting. Or get on the forums and see what the prob is. DMOZ is pretty fickle.

    What about having good content
  15. unpeuloufoque
I suppose it depends on why you blog, sometimes the quality of who visits or links is more important than big numbers.. the thing is to write a good blog and to keep on trying to imrpove your writing rather than chasing names in an address book.

I hear Squidoo may be falling foul of Google and loose a fair amount of credibility along the way - pity I just signed up.
I came across Zimbio - Blog Directory and that is already bringing traffic after just a week. - Worth a try.
(not forgetting all my friends here on Blogcatalogue)

Most are in agreeement that quality articles, well written and promoted via social bookmarking sites is the best way to go.

Post super duper great contents for my holy great readers
  21. ThriftShopRomantic
Posting on forums in your niche area, with your blog link in your signature (and make sure you mention what kind of blog it is) can be really effective without breaking any posting rules.

This way you are gaining exposure to folks who are already interested in your topic.

Of course, this HAS to be backed up by good quality content. And it will take a while to really build a readership. But you'll have the readers you're looking for.
  22. vertito
oh well, first right content to right audience, they keep on coming back for more. secondly, web exposure via many different ways.

i am sure, the others here have more than 100 hits a day from their blogsite.

hmm..that got me into thinking, does feeder increase unique page hits?

    oh well.
  23. nobelfinance
What about PPC??? this gives you intant traffic, but can be $$$, and if you have good content and handle the client well (newsletter etc), they will return? picking good niche keywords and SEO ??

I think a couple of you said stumble upon is a good way to get traffic. When you go to sign-up there is this program that you have to download. What is this program that you have to download? I would prefer to not download anything. Grus..

You can get an account and submit it through the website. I use the Firefox plugin though. It's light and easy to use.

All my blogs are wordpress blogs and I have a paid plugin called "auto social poster" ( get it here www.mass-automation.com/specials/idevaffiliate.php?id=218_8_1_3 ) .. Basically for every post, I automatically send notification to a random 4 out of 25 or so social bookmarking sites that I've signed up to .. (you don't want to spam these sites) .. and my referral statistics show some traffic from my efforts. (I have almost 50 blogs and it is time consuming to manually bookmark everything)

I also manually submit the 'really good ones' to Reddit and 'really cool ones' to stumbleupon for the heck of it. I tried spending $25 to StumbleUpon/ads site on a particularly popular post, but I did not increase any susbscribers .. just traffic equal to my $0.05/click display it cost me.
    1. nusuni
Yeah, I've found stumbleupon advertising to be quite worthless as well. In fact, I wrote a post about stumbleupon ads being worthless like 8 months ago and ironically it hit quite nice on there - got like 5k hits.
  26. Eltas
There's a new, fully automated traffic-generation system that can send 1000s of targeted prospects to your website, every single day, for FREE! It takes just 5 minutes to set it up, and it's totally "viral" ... Check it out and create a FREE account at www.trafficswarm.com/go.cgi?463664
    1. nusuni
Traffic swarm isn't new, and it's traffic is quite worthless. The only people using it are webmasters wanting to get more traffic to their site - they don't even read the other sites.

I hop on my right foot while spinning clockwise at the rate of 60rpm and chanting "ALALALALALYAYAYAYAALALALALAAYAYAYAYAYA."

Still seeking some results from that though.

I have done a lot of reading on different SEO tips. I find that Digg traffic although great at first is not traffic that stays with you for long period of times, I could be retracting that statement because digg.com is highly spidered by google and even post for my blog will show up on digg.com before they site shows up in the rankings.

Sites like these have also increased my traffic. I will not say by a great deal but it does help. I'm not one for social sites but this one seems to be better than most.

Thoof.com is a great site, it is better than digg.com I think. Traffic seems to hang around on the site from there more than from digg.com. I really don't like high bounce rates.

Also you will want to get awstats install on your site, if you do not already, as well as google analytics. This will help with what key words to use on the site, and what your traffic is really shaping up to be. You will also be able to track patterns and other such things with the stats that both give you. They will not have the same stats but you can't have a perfect world. I believe google more than awstats, but I use awstats because it updates every 15 min the way I have it set up and I don't have to wait a day to get my stats.

You know I think that I will copy and paste this as a post on my blog sense I went into a rant.
  31. nusuni
Most days it is usually 10-15% Google/Yahoo, 10-30% stumbleupon, and the rest is from other blogs.

I like informative blogs like yours. www.africa-eltas.com gives a free africa Directory to promote your blog. You can also reposit these articles free of charge to

    oops I had one already
  34. Majik
Usually the only way I can get traffic to my blog is by participating in threads like these. Sometimes you get traffic by posting quality comments on others blogs. I've had a couple of posts stumbled, and I saw an increase in traffic, but it was only temporary. I'm trying to recreate my blog, because when I started blogging everybody was saying it was quite good, now I'm getting more constructive criticism than before. But the best way to increase traffic is to increase the number of quality posts you have. As well as finding a niche and staying in it.

    Any new reviews are welcome.
