near Indonesia, before were pirates and bad guys immigrate from england
    1. msbaby
That's the same thing that entered my mind when I read the question. Wasn't Australia kind of the English dumping ground for criminals way back when? I'm not criticizing as I believe the United States was as well but as you asked....

Here are other (more than likely misconceptions) things that I have heard about Australia.

There are deadly stinging lizards and insects that love to hang out at night on the toilet seats.

That in the outback there are wild dogs that will drag your kids away and eat them. Or is that Africa?

That Australians are tough as nails and love to drink, fight and will kick your tail for giggles.

That musicians I know go to play concerts in Sydney and absolutely love it.

If any Aussies that read my post, I'd love to hear the facts.
    2. siralmo
yes, yes we will kick your ass, mind you biff is a part of footy culture

Actually I blogged about one of the funniest things ever yesterday. When Australia won the only Gold medal they've ever taken in the winter olympics (short track). It's a magic moment in history. see it at a-vante.blogspot.com

Since I'm a big fan of Tennis I also know that Australian Open begins soon.. Yay!

I've also got a couple of friends in melbourne. I like them

I also know that New Zealanders don't like australians. And then the history of cons and brits and auburginers.
They've sent forces to iraq and canberra is the capitol since they couldn't decide between sidney and melbourne.

The famous operahouse was designed by a dane.
Hamlet was also a dane but he didn't have anything with australia to do.
    1. siralmo
BAHAHAHAHA!!! the greatest moment in Winter Olympic history . that is so cool, you found HG and Roy

you should see them cover State of Origin.

the australian open has started already, with tournaments here in brisbane and in perth

new zealanders are cool, but we will always disagree at something, anyone who knows new zealanders will laugh at this or will probably already have seen this au.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdVHZwI8pcA
    2. acousticguitarist
at least you've said a few things that are rasonable
    3. acousticguitarist
roy and hg , yes very good, not sure if they'd get it
    4. avante
      Too cute!

(- I probably didn't graps every humoristic aspect of that film but I enjoyed it.)

Isn't the Dingo Fence longer than the Great Wall of China?
    1. siralmo
      the dingo fence??
    2. siralmo
i know, you mean the rabbit proof fence

      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rabbit-proof_fence
    3. busylizzy
Here's a Wikipedia link to The Dingo Fence which is 2500 km long

      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dingo_Fence
    4. busylizzy
Wow! The rabbit fence is pretty long, too, but not quite as long as the Dingo Fence.

Looks like we were both on Wiki at the same! LOL!!!!!!!!!!
    5. siralmo
      LOL!!!!

well the rabbit proof fence is actually three fences with a combined length of 3500km
    6. siralmo
oh BTW the great wall of china is 6,400 km long so it beats the both of the fences combined
    7. busylizzy
Well, I am not watching any more documentaries about Australia! I thought I could believe everything I heard on TV!
  6. acousticguitarist
Siralmo, they haven't got the foggiest
  7. acousticguitarist
Too many sharks, see below, don't bother going to Australia, go somewhere else, there's already too many people on our beaches. Go to Bali that's nice or some other place.

    1. siralmo
hey talk for your self i know heaps of places where there is not a person for kilometres, besides, but then again you should have beaches like that aswell

but those sharks aren't too friendly are they
    2. acousticguitarist
yes... but don't tell anyone :-)
    3. acousticguitarist
my friends brother got taken by a shark about a year back at kingscliff, serious

kingscliff is just a fraction south of fingal
    4. siralmo
i know where kingscliff is its not like i have never been to tweed before
    5. acousticguitarist
yeah, but I thought you might not know Fingal, a lot of people don't

I was at kingy a few days back swimming

I guy got a shark bite there the other day
    6. siralmo
i have actually never heard of fingal or at least its never stuck in my mind, and WOW at that article.

did you hear a few months ago about a helicopter landing on broadbeach, i was in that exact spot the day before at the same time :s that was a bit freaky coz that was our regular spot which we were frequenting at the time.
    7. acousticguitarist
No, but a plane crashed there and a guy I worked with was killed in a crash just out from broadbeach about a year and a bit ago

I'm not making it up either, I know so many people in the area, when I hear an ambulance I get nervous now

Fingal is beautiful, the developers are trying to get in. Actually something to do with Greg Norman from memory.

      It's a horrible place, no-one would like it :-)
  8. busylizzy
Please don't say you don't know what I'm talking about when I mention The Great Barrier Reef!
    1. acousticguitarist
no that's gone, people wont like it, there's a better one in Africa or somewhere
    2. siralmo
yes its been poluted by tourists, fishing and industry

    3. busylizzy
Are you telling me that "Finding Nemo" was all a lie?! Oh, the humanity!
  9. cranelegs
pretty much that they have koalaroos and kanga bears. and they have excellent great white sharks. and that their former prime minister is a big buddy of dubya's.

    The Wiggles
    The singer Sia
    Sydney Opera House
    dingos

    1. GFG
An Australian chick will melt your heart
    2. acousticguitarist
If I was 15 I'd find her very beautiful, because she looks like a fifteen year old but a little underdeveloped. But it's her body and beautiful in its own way

These days I think she needs a bit of a good feed
    3. siralmo
yeh she looks really young there
    4. acousticguitarist
if my 14 year old son took her out, i'd be saying son, she's too young get an older girl
  12. myriadlife
Australia is great and the people are too. I spent a month there several years ago. Would love to go back but is such a long expensive trip.
  13. LynneaUrania
I only know the Australian folk who have come here. They are a fun bunch who share my love of brewer's yeast.
    1. acousticguitarist

I was told that in Australia UGG boots are used as slippers or to keep your feet warm after surfing. and they cost about $70

In the us UGG Boots they are the in thing. I even see women wearing them in the summer on 80 degree days. They cost about $200 bucks I have even seen more costly ones.
    1. acousticguitarist
yeah i had a pair on yesterday wearing them as slippers, and it's hot as anything
  16. sisterofmercy
    Umm, Australia?
Fosters, Didgeridoo (we have one that we use to wind up the dog with ), BBQ's on the beach at Christmas, oh and Steve Irwin (though not so much these days). I have some relatives who live over there too, don't know if I've ever met them though.
    1. calais50
I have a didgeredoo that an ex made me. It is the real thing.
  17. ophase
I have an Australian friend who is also Ph.D. student in Sydney.
When he came to turkey this summer, I realized that he is a great swimmer.
He told me that the swimming lessons in Australia are compulsory in middle education. Cool! I like swimming
    1. acousticguitarist
swimming is part pf the curriculum here, if you can't swim ypou'll probably drown
    2. siralmo
yes and so is surf awareness

i think tourists should go through the same education :S
    3. acousticguitarist
I don't think tourists should come to australia, it's a terrible place.

      Go away

    4. acousticguitarist
The predictions about how many chinese tourists will be coming to australia in about ten years is staggering. It's in the millions per year.
  18. MidwestMom
I had a group of Aussie friends at university -- what a great bunch of guys! Here's what I know:

Aussie rules football beats american football hands down
Australia is the most arid continent
Not everyone talks like a Queenslander
Dire Straits *and* ACDC (not just Olivia Newton John, for g*d's sake!)
Guy Pearce got his start on Neighbors
It's not an Australian film unless Brian Brown appears in it at some point.
Sharks (but that's already been mentioned by the local red panda)
People live underground in Coober Pedy

That's all I can think of right now, except Aussie Aussie Aussie Oy Oy Oy!
    1. acousticguitarist
aussie rules football totally sucks. Only half the country like it.

aussie rules is good when they play the irish at a mix of gaelic and aussie

This is the best stuff, au.youtube.com/watch?v=sgUMSluv_E8

the rest of the time I can't stand it, however, it is a religious experience in some places here
    2. siralmo
      =O you lie...

i have been to three grand finals and frequent the gabba

      i like it
    3. MidwestMom
Acoustic, thanks for the video. Love it. (No pads, no helmets... it can be brutal, but IMO fun to watch.)

Siralmo, most of the Aussies I knew were from in and around Melbourne. But here, they only show Aussie Rules in the middle of the night. Needless to say, there were some wild times at 3 am. (Yes, I'm talking about footie).

=D Thanks for the topic. It was fun.
    4. siralmo
      hahaha no pads or helmets???

since when do you need pads or helmets??
    5. acousticguitarist
why on earth would anyone wear a pad or a helmet if there was no motorbike, what's wrong with people over there, too soft
    6. acousticguitarist

"Not everyone talks like a Queenslander"

I know someone from South Australia who was asked which part of England he came from when he went to Queensland
    1. acousticguitarist
south australians have a slightly different accent. at times it can sound like a toned down kiwi accent.... expect anything in queensland :-)

      Sorry almao
    2. siralmo
hahaha don't worry was born in melbourne

i have more of a wog accent

      you talking about me??
  22. GusGITForestry
That you can get paid 69,000 sterling for the odd job of living in a luxury house in the Barrier, collecting coconuts, snorkeling and taking photos... and you can apply for such a Queensland government sponsored position online XD

And that info causes website crashing at their Tourism Board XD

    www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/australiaandthepacific/australia/4225773...

Warning: It can also cause murder, hijacking of flights from USA and Europe to Oz, and a potentially interesting new Big Brother show stuff with "the chosen eleven" applicants ;-)
    1. siralmo
      BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!
    2. acousticguitarist
to give an overview of what this about:

A beer truck crashed off a highway into a river, very close to where I live.

It happened on a long weekend so it was unguarded...
  23. jeremylong
Brisbane is a great place -- quiet, peaceful, good for relaxed lifestyle
    (especially Noosa Head)
    1. siralmo
i agree not with noosa as such i have never liked noosa, but if we are going north maybe around dicky beach, calourndra, maroochy shire
    2. acousticguitarist
but noosa is not in brisbane.

it wil disappear in a few years, it's a river delta and Hasting Street will go under
  24. bwninzer
Hi siralmo! My voice coach at work is Australian so I know that I like Krunchies candy. He's always handing it out to us. My bf didn't like it as much.
    1. siralmo
      hmm... do you mean ??
    2. acousticguitarist
      i grew up on them
    3. siralmo
      mmm yes
  25. PetLvr
I always wanted to retire in Brisbane, Queensland ...

A few years back my cousin's daughter travelled Australia on a bus tour ride of all the beaches (north east coast) and after seeing the pictures pretty much confirmed how nice it is down under.

Did I mention that I'm writing this now - it's -35c and almost wish I was anywhere else.
    1. siralmo
apparently here it's 28 and cloudy, i see three clouds and lots of sun, nice and warm
    2. acousticguitarist
      Hart, that's where I live
    3. acousticguitarist
I put a jumper (sweater) on when it's 28, too cold
    4. PetLvr
I am also a fan of "Flight of the Conchords" ... and um, they don't like Australians
    5. siralmo
      no... they are new zealanders
    6. KaiteeThePirate
      We're recovering from floods!
    7. siralmo
ouch... sucks to be you guys, although it doesn't seem as bad as last year or the year before, i remember the news going nuts for weeks
    8. KaiteeThePirate
Actually it's really not that bad at all, but the media made it sound like we're completely cut off from civilisation. We have cyclones here all the time so a bit of rain is nothing. Those dudes in Mt Isa though, they're the ones you gotta feel sorry for.
  26. lillyslife
I am an Aussie so I already know too much....
    1. rainforestrobin
SEE Below (put in wrong place sorry)

      Hi Lilly my beautiful friend!!!
  27. kirewass
My boys had an Australian nanny when they were small and needed day care. She was a preschool teacher and couldn't find any jobs in Sweden because she didn't speak Swedish. Eventually, she married a Swedish man and moved back to Sydney.
Australia is a beautiful country to me, and I would like to go there for visit. Even though I am terrified of snakes.
    1. acousticguitarist
we had a brown snake down stairs about 2 weeks ago. I don't love them either but in the country they are a part of life. I have seen 3 dangerous ones in 16 years living in 3 locations. The Pythons are ok, they eat the rats and mice and keep the others away.

My wife ran over a 9 foot python in our garage at our old house, poor bugger, she got it with the the front and back wheel, it was like going over a speed bump. We got a snake guy over to check it out but it was so scared of my wifes driving it took off, never seen again. The snake guy was going to try and fix it if it was injured.

I don't know anyone that has died of snakes, however, two guys I kbow were eaten by sharks. I'm not joking. But more people get killed on the roads around where i live and only one friend has been bitten by a snake and he didn't realise until he went to the doctor.

The wild life is the least of your problems, here they also have KFC and Maccas, that'll kill you faster than a snake.
    2. rainforestrobin
      @ acousticguitarist

I love these stories of yours; they are GREAT!!! -- so very Australian, but then that is why I love Australia, all that wild life and the resulting stories!!! Just tickles my funny bone. Thanks for sharing them.

I lived in the rainforest in QLD and I hiked barefoot, sure you have to watch where you walk and sit but most Aussie snakes are very shy and retiring and are long gone before you even see them. I think the only exceptions are the brown snake and the death adder. The taipan, which can be a multiple striker has highly toxic venom, BUT it is so fast and shy that Europeans didn't even know it existed until the --I think -- the 1950s. Also if you take a stick and tap the ground as you walk snakes will hear the vibration and leave the area. The don't hear air-borne sounds like humans. But hear ground vibrations. The only poisonous (to humans) snakes that might not move are death adders and browns, but that's only because they have little to fear, they are near the top of the food chain.

There are some excellent books on this topic and if you just learn which snakes are in your area, which ones are nocturnal, diurnal and arboreal then you know where and when to watch for them. As most Aussies know, the death adder will bury itself in sand or leaf mulch with only it's tiny tail end sticking out, which it wiggles to lure small prey such as mice. IT keeps it's head close to it's tail under the sand and the moment it hears the prey draw close it strikes. So it's just a matter of learning where and how to look for them. Just like learning to read all the lights and lines on the road at an intersection.
    3. siralmo
i had a red belly black in my house when i lived in sydney, thats about it
    4. acousticguitarist
      thanks robin, interesting
  28. rainforestrobin
I lived in Queensland, New South Wales, Tasmania and have driven up and down the whole eastern seaboard a few times. I LOVE Australia. The people are kind, funny, forthright, not easily impressed with shallow drivel or cultural hierarchy, they don't care if you have a degree or not, nor are they easily impressed if you do, they are nuts and bolts people who only care if you are kind and helpful. I believe they have their priorities straight and I like that. They are some of the absolute best people you could meet. I just adore the Aussies.
    1. acousticguitarist
      we bow with humility, thankyou

bloody tourists swimming in our beaches :-)

I'm going to start to ask people to see their swimming permits from now on

    www.sebastyne.net/2009/01/what-aussies-say-about-themselves-that-isnt-true/

Before I made closer contact with Aussies, my idea of them were pretty much the Bondi Beach surfer hotties and out back Donks.
    1. acousticguitarist
what's wrong with bondi beach surfers... i used to swim every morning in winter at bondi?
    2. acousticguitarist

No, you will not steal my comments from this thread. My snakes are copyrighted. If you want a stupid story, I will happily write one.

    Here's one for you, SirAlmo:

    What the...?
    1. acousticguitarist
      And you said?
    2. siralmo
hahahaha thats funny did they ask you if we had toilets as well?
    3. Sebastyne
I've seen plenty of helicopters in Australia, but I've never seen one in USA!

(Probably because I've never been to USA, but hey, don't let facts get in a way of a good story, eh?)
  41. SpiritualBloggers
    @ AG

Hey do not make fun of Uggs. I have the pair I moved here with in 8th grade - still, and another pair we picked up when we went back when I was in high school. I don't wear them but around the house though, at least not usually.
    1. acousticguitarist
cooper, would you like another pair? What size?
    2. Sebastyne
I had to send a pair of Uggies to a friend in Finland. Then all her co-workers wanted them, but I refused to help. Enough is enough.
  45. acousticguitarist
What you may find of interest is Australia has the highest male youth suicide in the world. This is troublesome.

Don't know why. but for me I'm thinking of Pancake Parlour. hahaha Lived in Melb for awhile and so addicted to Pancake Parlour. Maybe that's why it pops up when thinking of Australia.
  50. idealpinkrose
I travelled to Australia last year. And I think the Queen Victoria Building, Sydney Tower, Harbour Bridge, Blue Mountain, Sydney Aquarium, and Opera House are great place to visit.

I also met some Australians and I think they are cool.
    1. acousticguitarist
i have a personal story about each one of those places

      centrepoint tower
  51. hectopascal
At first, when I was living in South Africa, the only thing I knew about Australia was that it was full of sheep. After I moved here, turns out that wasn't true lolllll!!! It's New Zealand that's got the sheep. Australia is a beautiful country, but what makes it great to live here is the people
    1. acousticguitarist
oh no, he's mentioned the new zealand sheep

      here we go
    2. hectopascal
mwahahahaha.... didn't mean to open a can of worms... baaaaa

    1. acousticguitarist
my friend met Mel Gibson at Randwick in Sydney an the the mid 80's, Mel had a hous e at Coogee. My friend lived a very weird life, he was very much an organic guy, no tv, in fact this guy only used wash once a week at one stage because he said it destroyed free radicals, he didn't own a tv and rode a bicycle and had a Kombi. After he had been introduced to Mel and Mel had gone , he said "Who's Mel Gibson".
  54. ashishdesai
Lotsa kangaroos and a good cricket team (or probably a decent cricket team after recent losses).
    1. siralmo
there have been many recent losses the funny thing is that the other countries think that they are kicking arse when they are actually almost playing a baby team, its sad really, if only the teams could stick with the best players of all time always in their prime, the game would only get better
  55. zman61
i know, that the greatest greek population outside of greece is located in melbourne/australia
    1. siralmo
hahahah if you want a wog you'll definately find them in melbourne

      anyone seen the wog boy???
    2. acousticguitarist
no it's Chocago, Mebourne then Thessaloniki

yeah "wog boy"... two mates of mine went to school with one the guys involved in that, and one of my friends is adamant that one of the characters in the show is based around my other friend. They are Italian, I can't say his name because the guy is very famous in his field, it's not music but I did play guitar with the guy for 2 years
    3. asyst

Good wine, good waves for surgfing, K Minogue, Jason Donovan, the mis treatment of aboriginies placing the biracial ones in segregated camps in the 1930s+....
and that Aboriginies are allegedly psychic being able to communicated telephatically w/ each other
    1. GusGITForestry
Hey, I blogged exactly about that a while ago O_O

      git-forestry-blog.blogspot.com/2008/05/bloggers-unite-for-human-rights.html

(Were you reading my mind or what? )
    2. siralmo
that is one of those mornings you will never forget where you were, but the speeches were sooooo frigen looooong
    3. GusGITForestry
It made headlines by breakfast at this side of the blue ball. Normally wars and hijacked planes do that. So I toast a Fosters in your general direction down under.

Disclaimer: we got the short versions of the speeches XD
  66. wehireu
    Ian Thorpe swam there.
The teletubbies are a strange mix of koala bear and kangaroo and come from Australis
    They like Fosters Beer
They made the ak ak machine gun
    Nicole Kidman came from Australia
    They are a commonwealth country
    Koala bears have sharp claws
Eucalyptus trees and platypus's go together
    Rugby is a favorite sport.
New Zealand and lots of sheep is not far away.
They have opal mines in Australia.
    They eat barbecued shrimp.
The solar updraft tower was invented in Australia.

    Not much.
    1. acousticguitarist
rugby is not a favourite sport, it's the religion of New Zealand. Rugby in Australia is a secondary sport behind Rugby League and Aussie rules in winter. However, more children play football-soccer than any other sport in Australia.
  67. GiftShopping
Koala Bears, Eucalyptus trees, the Outback, Tasmainian Devils, Walabies, Sharks, Gold, Diamond Mines, Opera House, Aboriginal Tribes, Crocodiles, Steve Irwin (RIP), The Wiggles, The big red rock...
  68. siralmo
    BTW koalas aren't bears

i just thought i might throw that out there, seeing as there is this misconception amongst people that they are bears when they aren't
    1. Bonnielicious
Do people actually think they are bears? Seriously?
    2. acousticguitarist
yes they are not bears, it's important that people don't confuse koalas with bears, they are sort of like what hobbits are to humans, koalas are to bears.
    3. siralmo
i've had people try and convince me that because they are called koala bears they must be a type of bear

the funniest thing is that they aren't actually called koala bears, its just one of those things that have just be popularised

i tell them they have a screw loose
    4. acousticguitarist
yes people do, because they've always been called koala bears.

But that is no fault of the Koalas, we could blame el nino and global warming
    5. GusGITForestry
Come on guys, everyone knows they are pirates. Aye aye! XD

      git-forestry-blog.blogspot.com/2008/08/koalas-go-berserker.html
