The way I see it they are exteme because if anything goes wrong, its curtains.

Example of extreme sports are base jumping, skysurfing.

i don't know if that's a reason to call it Extreme, normal sports can be just as hazardous

You can get a tennis ball between the eyes and survive, if your nascar spins out of control at 200mph you'll be lucky to get out alive.

so are you saying that you consider racing an extreme sport??

besides you can get hit in the head by a baseball and die
  3. harveyavatar
yes but that is a more as a quirk, whereas if something goes wrong with extreme sports more chances than not you are in a hot spot. thats how is see it anyway, but there may be some other element.

My uncle got a cricket ball lodged in his eye socket, that was pretty extreme in my opinion! As he had a contact lense in too...ew. Anyway cricket isn't normally extreme teehee...

Depending on the type, snowboarding and skiing can be extreme.... mountain climbing can be extreme too (if you fancy scaling K2, you're bloody brave)

I'm such a happy girl that skiing made the list:)
I just got home from a whole day at Vail. mmmmm....
Skiing definitely doesn't have to be extreme though, whereas basejumping seems like it pretty much always does. Its best if it IS extreme, but it doesn't have to be.

My son is a flat track motorcycle racer, racing at speeds of up to 193 mph, taking turns at 92 mph. This was his first year as a competitor and placed second overall for the year in the Championship Cup Series in Arizona.
  12. harveyavatar
Far out MMM. Mi Mom would have never let me buy a motorcycle

He's 31 year old, a design engineer for Raytheon - he does what he wants. I do, however, hold my breath during his races. Here's a story I wrote about him and his racing. Enjoy!

What Extreme Sports do you know of?
Why do you think they are Extreme?

Many and the reason they are pursued at all is because we have a segment of society, predominantly young males, who are idle, thrill seeking adrenaline junkies, who have parents with money who will finance their exploits.

I know that in Canada we are now sending the bills for rescuing thrill seeking adrenaline junkies to the survivors and or to their families. We have young males here who ski, snowboard and snowmobiles in avalanche zones that are well marked, well advertised, and roped off with closure signs put in place - out of bounds - danger - do not enter. They do the same in back country areas that are well marked and advertised as being permanently closed.

This year several have had to be rescued risking the lives of those who went out to save them and others have died and the public will tolerate no more. Some offenders have been banned from ski hills for life and they deserved it. In the summer we also have fools who dive into rocky white water rivers in areas that are again well advertised and marked off - out of bounds - danger - do not enter.

Why should these thrill seekers get a free rescue when every time they require rescuing they are endangering the lives of our rescue people?

IMO if these adrenaline junkies had to work physically all day long like farmers, fishers, loggers and other laborers do then they would have no energy left over for thrill seeking in out of bounds areas. BTW did I mention that one has to be very well off or to have parents who are very well off to take up these "extreme sports"?

Can I send my son over
    2. timethief
Many young men under the age of about 30 think they are immortal. That's okay with me but I will NOT pay their rescue bills nor for their hospitalization or other medical bills. You want to be extreme that's cool then accept responsibility, purchase insurance in advance, and be prepared to pay for your rescue and medical bills.
    3. siralmo
@TT / response 1 - i honestly don't think so, especially if they have done it before.
    4. harveyavatar
You have a point, but then again when you take a car to go to the movies and have an accident you also endanger lives of rescue people. I agree for off limits snowing, if there is a risk of an avalanche For sure, some of these sports should require having a guide (like hydrospeed). I dont believe this is reserved to rich kids. I wouldnt be overly strict with extreme sports though, people should be able to pursue a passion. There is one extreme sport which should be disallowed: central bank opening money floodgate which sweeps many a law abiding and working citizen out to sea, whose chances of swimming back to shore are slim.

Having well off parents isn't the only way people start skiing. Sometimes you just have a friend who loans you equipment and go in the back country (yes that's more dangerous). It is thrill seeking but its CERTAINLY not just young males. And it doesn't always have to be so dangerous. I've been skiing for 15 years and its pretty much my favorite thing on the planet. People are more likely to hurt themselves in a car accident than anything else, and expecting them to not do something outdoors in beautiful places that they LOVE and can be a peaceful and wonderful thing hurts my heart a little.
But you're probably right about the cost thing.

I think the best thing is the pain

I think it has to do mostly with conditions and skill. I snowboard and surf, both can be extreme sports but they aren't for me because I do not surf the largest waves or board on dangerous terrain with sheer vertical drop. Love to watch others though. I think for some people the feeling they get when they do this stuff is more important than life itself.
