If you read Dan Brown, you may conclude that the Illuminati is imaginary and just a conspiracy from the Vatican's Guy.
Dan Brown's Illuminati historical perspective is very poor, it doesn't even mention Adam Weishaupt the founder of the Illuminati.
In fact many people think that this group has never existed, they just didn't do their work of research because you can find the very proof of their existence in Georges Washington Lettes in US National Archive:

Indeed. Imo, it matters little how one calls them (Illuminati, globalists, Luciferians...), fact is there is a group of a few thousand people hell bent on carrying out a one world government prophecy, with a handful of banking families acting as a spearhead.
As we are on the subject, after having read quite a bit on the subject, I have yet to hear a better explanation to the origin of the expression "war to end all wars" (la "der des der" in French)than the suggestion that it proceeds from Bible prophecy (Isaie 2:1-4)
Note: imo, this worldview would be limited to the "Illuminati" cult

I can remember back in 1963 taking the Civilizations course at Georgetown taught by Carrol Quigley. He talked about various so-called secret groups (how secret can it be if you are talking about them) including the Illuminati and the Cognoscenti, which had roots in Europe going way back. When you get into this stuff you are one-step away from "the so-and-so's run everything" kind of thinking.
We humans seem to have a need to believe that someone somewhere is in charge and actually has a plan. Well, I'm still waiting.-

People and cultures have long created answers to questions that vex them. The "illuminati" and such are of the same mold as sun gods and mermaids.
Modern geopolitical macroeconomics and finance is stupefyingly complex, and like any unfathomable phenomenon, there are folks who will always seek simple answers to explain them. While there is no league of evil dudes pulling levers behind curtains, National interests and the race for wealth from depleting resources is a problem most people should still be aware of - and can be if the choose to.
