What do you think about the antibiotic use in the farming & livestock industry which subsequently affects your health? Do you think it is necessary? Would it be better to facilitate progression toward eliminating this practice? What do you think about research showing that you can increase production volume, revenues and decrease disease & contamination risk by eliminating these standard procedures and using less intensive practices?

We dont use any unless it is a life and death situation and then we dont sale the animals. I had to on one goat but no one ate him. All we give them is wormer and that is because we cant get DE here and it cost to much to ship in the amout we need for 17 pigs.

That's understandable Amy. It is the indiscriminate use that is of concern and using it as a general prevention tool rather than effective treatment for a necessary ailment.

      Amy,

I think most farmers who raise their own animals are like you... it's the huge factory farms that are the problem.

I heard a commercial the other day on the radio. It was talking about how important the family farm is to our lives, jobs, and health. I agreed, until the last sentence.

"This message has been paid for by Monsanto."

I have a bottle in the fridge that is about a year old and has one shot out of it. I need to throw it away. I buy my meat at a local meat market where they raise their own.

Same here. We buy grass fed organic beef at a deep discount at a local food coop here. It saves us lots of $$.

Aren't "super-bugs" the result of submedicinal use in farmdustry?
    1. amybyrd21
yes they give them antibiotics on the factory farms and put them in farrowing crates that are big enough for them to turn around in and that is it. PIGS that is. The cows are on feed lots with out grass or anything and the pigs are on concrete floors. Mine have grass, mud, bugs, hay, and open pollinated food. Mine are happy pigs instead of living in hell.
    2. Agit8r
right. like I said, "in farmdustry"

I know a farmer that does that and I can smell his pigs for miles. I cant smell mine at all unless it is really hot and the wind blows right to the house. I think that has something to do with it too.

This is precisely why we eat mostly wild game or do like Amy does and buy from local meat markets.

My daughter looks like a 15 year old should, too, and not a 22 year old.

glad to hear that. There has been indications for years that hormones and antibiotic practices in the livestock industry has contributed to early onset puberty in young girls while also leading to increased risk of cancers in women and men.

yep we are recently eating locally grown food and avoiding factory foods. It is crazy what they put into what people eat!
    1. tcinvestor
Jason, glad to hear that your eating more locally grown food and supporting your local community while also eating healthier.

My ex & I used such feeds when we raised game birds (which are prone to diseases--particularly turkeys.) It certainly helped prevent any outbreaks (or sickened customers.)

You know how I feel. I left a comment about that very subject on your blog.

    Where is the (puke) emoticon?
    1. tcinvestor
Is there a puke emoticon? I might like to use that one. :-)

I like my steak raised on GM food, hormones and antibiotics... not.
    1. tcinvestor
your new avatar reminds me of the Monte Python movie with the Killer Rabbits. I think it was Search For The Holy Grail.
    2. harveyavatar
Hehe, Tcinvestor. That movie was a favorite. If memory serves, there was only one rabbit.
    3. tcinvestor
Exactly right. There was just one "Killer Rabbit" a ferocious beast indeed.

It should be a crime the amount of antibiotics the farm industry uses. It has hurt all of our health and it has created antibiotic resistant super bugs like MRSA. I only eat grass fed beef or buffalo. Didn't the US Congress have a bill this year (2009) about outlawing the use of antibiotics in animals for food. Whatever happened to that.

GMO foods, who knows that that does to us and our food supply.

I ain't dead yet. Go antibiotics!

What I would expect from an orange pitcher full of artificial flavoring and coloring mixed with water.

What happened to Mr. Hi C?
