Yoga is a kind of exercise. If practised every day for a period of half-an-hour, every one can improve not only their healthbut also their personality.

kinda exercise ??? lol , there are different aspects of it - yog ( and not yoga) means union ! its practised in terms of
1. Yama (Principles or moral code)
* Ahimsa - A principle of non-violence
* Satya - A principle of Truthfulness
* Asteya - A principle of non stealing
* Brahmacharya - Continence / celibacy
* Aparigah - A principle of non-hoarding or non possessiveness
2. Niyama (Personal Disciplines)
* Shoucha - Purity
* Santosh - Contentment
* Tapa - Endurance
* Swadhyaya- Self study
* Eshwar Pranidhan- Dedication
3. Asana - (Yoga Postures / positions) A stable and comfortable posture which helps attain mental equilibrium.
4. Pranayama - (Yoga Breathing) Extension and control of breath.
5. Pratyahara - (Withdrawal of Senses) A mental preparation to increase the power of mind.
6. Dharana - (Concentration on Object) Concentration of mind on one object and its field.
7. Dhyan - (Meditation) With drawing mind from all external objects and Focusing it on one point and meditating on it.
8. Samadhi - (Salvation) State of Super bliss, joy and merging individual consciousness in to universal consciousness. Union between Jivatman and Paramatman. Union of Shiva and Shakti in Sahasrar Chakra (the top of the head). Realizing the Bramhan (pure consciousness) or Realization of God is the ultimate achievement of Human Birth.

i prefer doing kapal-bhati and anlom-vilom ! and its good that you must follow rules like time intervals after eating should be taken in consideration ! in personal aspects, its quite much gifted to be able to perform and know if not all but few aspects of it ! -
Can you teach me bat yoga, I bet it would require me to hang upside down a lot.
Yoga teaches you how to be calm, relieve stress and improves your circulation. -

I would love to try it but I am recovering from my 3rd spinal surgery. The last one was a anterior/posterior double fusion so I don't know when I would be able to try it out.
Any suggestions?

@bladeaxe4--thanks for the clarification--yoga's definitely a lot more than a kind of exercise that takes half an hour in the morning.
@mycutepetpics--find a qualified, experienced yoga teacher and talk to him/her about your particular physical issues. Yoga asana practice is not a one-size-fits-all thing. We all have to work with the bodies we've got and their limitations. Also, if you're going to practice yoga seriously, it's really important, particularly starting out, to work with a teacher rather than just with books or websites. Otherwise, you're likely to hurt rather than help yourself.

I have tried it several times over the years (with good teachers) but I don't like doing it at all. Physically it is doesn't do much for me (I never could sit cross legged, and I have weak wrists) and it doesn't help my back. I much prefer walking or swimming for exercise and spiritually I can get the same benefit from breathing exercises and meditation, or working on my art.
I do have friends who derive great benefit from doing it, so I am not knocking it. It just isn't something I am interested in although I have tried to give it a go several times over the years. -
I think yoga is not just an excercise it is more than that, it is a journey to your innerself which can help in your total wellbeing both inner and outer, and you will find world a really beautiful and happy place to live in.

I am no longer able to do yoga...but when I did it I loved it. Yoga brought me such peace and such an awareness of my body.

but yau'll can always visit my Yoga website.
Lot's of videos, discussion and stuff on the topic of Yoga at that site.

From what I can see there are generally two types of people that do it, one that wants a healthy body and that's fine; the other often thinks that by doing yoga asanas that they are getting somewhere Spiritual, I disagree with that idea because it creates a goal and enforces the thought of separation and leaves a person stranded on the path of Endless Becoming. I have never met a person that reached the ultimate goal through standard yoga and I have met hundreds of people that have done yoga, but I have met people that have reached the goal without yoga. One of the only yogas that I have seen that is worthwhile is Surat Shabd Yoga, this internal and very useful. However Bhakti Yoga is interesting but as Ramakrishna said, he'd rather taste the sugar than be it... that also implies incompleteness. Jnana Yoga is of interest but not for everyone.

I've been doing Ashtanga yoga for about 3 years and really enjoy it.
I do it mainly because of the exercise: I enjoy it because it's a very rigorous form of exercise, it's great for cardio, strength and flexibility (Ashtanga is the only type of asana yoga that is a form of cardio exercise).
I find that doing it frequently gives me more energy, makes me feel more motivated and generally satisfied with everything, I don't stress about things. And I love it because it's easy to do even if I'm traveling or busy and I can do it for as short or as long as I have time for.
It just makes me feel so much better and more positive. Depending on your point of view you could attribute it to the positive benefits of regular exercise, or the whole spirituality thing of yoga. I honestly don't care which of those is true. I just know that overall it makes me a healthier person, so I just do it and enjoy it. -
Yoga to me is about the balance of the body, the mind and the spirit. It is not just about postures, it can be about the breath, meditation or karmic deeds. It can be about your art, music, writing or work. It is about the relationship you have with your self and your connection to others.
Like life, yoga is ever evolving and infinite.
