TV survival shows are becoming more popular

So this made me wonder as to why?

1. Are they trying to tell us something?

2. Do you think its right to kill animals for TV ratings?

3. If you are really going to have a survival show shouldn’t it be based more on reality, more like bear gills using only a knife?

4. And last do you think you could survive living in the wild?

It's crap, show me something similar to the movie, "Surviving the Game."

Well that movie has nothing to do with the basics of surviving in the wild.

You want a TV reality show like running man LOL

Man vs wild is an awesome show, I was thinking about this topic myself actually - I guess as human beings we like to thing that we all can do it just like the professionals, we like to be prepared for the worst. But I also think this relates to the popularity of home cooking shows as well as survival shows - we all want to believe that its "that easy"

Well i never got the impression that surviving in the wild would be easy.

Especially eating all those nasty little bugs LOL

I actually love the show Man vs Wild (it helps that I find Bear Grylls extremely hot)!

It is easy to forget the years of experience that they have though, and they're also in a relatively good physical condition too which would help them last a bit longer than the average Joe.

i've made it through about a third of an episode of "Survivor" before boredom drove me mad. What is so flippin' exciting about "reality" shows anyway

You mean besides my opinion that they are stupid, contrived, trite, stupid, without redeeming value, a waste of time, stupid, and pointless?

I don't like them...or any of the other equally moronic "reality" shows.

I agree with you about most reality shows, but learning how to survive in the wild is never a waste of time or pointless LOL

The odds are that I will die comfortably in my bed here in a suburb of a major modern city, so. indeed, learning to survive in the wild is pointless for such as me. Besides, there are a lot of different kinds of wild...do you seriously think you might some day have to survive with nothing but your bare hands on a glacier or in the Namib?

Seeing someone skilled do something on TV is a long way from being able to do it yourself. I've watched countless surgeries on TV and in no case did I ever get the notion that those hours of observation prepared me to deliver a baby by C-section myself, remove an appendix or a brain tumour, or install a pacemaker.

Truth is, this kind of "reality show" interests and entertains you, but as preparation for actually surviving in the wild, it's about as valuable as watching a video of a dentist drill teeth as preparation for doing it to your kids yourself.

Well its apparent you don’t get out of the city much. LOL

I have found in life that being prepared for any situation separates the living from the dead. Countless people each year find themselves in survival situations that they never thought could happen to them and they all paid a dear price due to lack of knowledge.

Knowledge is always pointless until you need it, and yes I just might!

And to compare building a shelter, finding water, or defending yourself to surgery is a little extreme.

But contrary to you, anything that i see get done with my own two eyes i can duplicate with almost exact detail.

Education is worthless unless you have the ability to put it to work.

Being skilled at doing anything is about your own confidence in accomplishing the task and ability.

From just observing in my life:

I have driven and handled equipment from tractor trailers to large cranes to planes

I have rebuilt numerous classic cars from the ground up

Repaired and rebuilt all types of engines

Built 2 house from scratch and did all electrical and plumbing

Installed radar and satellite navigation systems

    Captained large yachts and sailboats

    Reset and splinted broken bones

    Stitched up my own wounds

Diagnosed many medical problems for family members

    Etc

All this with no education or training, just from observing a few times.

And im sure I could do a C section its not that hard LOL
