To follow up the other discussion on microwave I decided it needed it's own topic. For me I use it all the time for frozen vegetables. I can quickly and easily cook and make a sauce for them using less power than it takes to run my stove for just a few minutes. I have a great microwave rice cooker, which turns out perfect rice every time. I never have coffee to reheat, but I so use it to partially defrost meat in as more traditional use.

BTW you can use aluminum foil safely in your microwave, most people don't know that so I am betting you didn't either. It is a matter of how it is used.

I prepare my three meals the normal way for when I have to work my two 16 hour shifts and then I reheat them at work in the microwave.

i hardly ever use it. if i do, i use it for heating up water for coffee/tea

I prefer my electric kettle for that, you never super-heat the water and have it boil over on you.

      Melt soap for moulds?
    2. pumpkinlights
Yeah, I make soap and I melt it in the micro.

I sanitize my kitchen sponge with it. One minute on high at the end of the day will kill the germs inside a damp sponge.
    1. bradhart
I run my sponges through the washer and dryer with a bleach load of towels.
    2. MidwestMom
Putting them in the dishwasher on the top rack also works, if you use a detergent that has bleach in it.

I use it for toast. I have a secret recipe where I also do have to include the microwave.

    2. Friday13
Sure. Provided it works, aside from the dust-gathering feature.
    3. Shy
it works perfect, just never use it!!!!!
    4. morgantj

    5. Shy

    6. morgantj
typically, yes. Don't you have any?

I don't eat microwaved food, so the only time my microwave gets used is when I'm cooking boiled eggs and I use it as an egg timer. I put a cup off water in it and zap it for two and a half minutes so I know how long my eggs have been boiling.

I use it to cook veggies when I'm in a rush. However, my 11-year-old decided to "bake" his Sculpey clay in the microwave on high for six minutes, resulting in a kitchen filled with hydrogen chloride gas. Neato!

I have one for crafts only out in the garage. I use it for drying rough turned wooden bowls and pen blanks.

    Currently as a boat anchor.
    1. SailboaterRob
We use real boat anchors, so we have no need for a microwave, therefore we don't own one. LOL

Cooking most things, I tried using the gas hob but things nearly set on fire, thought the microwave was safer..

When I write I have that cup of coffee alway sitting next to the macbook. It only goes down a bit at a time, a few hours later I look at it and say that I need to fill it up, but the coffee in the pot is cold (darn those green, UL, fire safety mods) so into the microwave it goes. I must not be the only one because the machine has a "reheat beverage" button on it. Ain't progress grand...

When I had a dog I couldn't trust I put meats in there to defrost (not using the power, just the enclosed, dog-proof space.) Other than the usual uses (popcorn, etc.,) I sometimes dry wet paper in there.

Did you know that you can blow up a papaya in the microwave? Yep, something about its water content...
  21. lulubelleb
Haven't had one at home for four years. Use the one at work to zap Lean Cuisines and veggies for lunch.
  22. mlinauer
I got rid of mine 6 years ago and haven't used one since.
  23. lianiwidjaja
I used to reheat leftover food
  24. alexinabox
I tried baking with it. When I'm too lazy to make eggs, I just get a like this flat bowl, crack an egg in there, whisk it, microwave that shit for like 3 minutes and eat it.

Other than that just everything else frozen or that's in need of being warmed up again.
  25. dfunzy
Keep it around. In case I want fast food and don't want to go out.
  26. oreosmom
Well in college we make everything in the microwave! Hahaha

My favorite would be baked potatoes. I know someone who can make cornbread in the microwave too, which is pretty cool.

Heat water for tea, melt cheese or butter, reheat the occasional thing, and use in the summer when it's too hot to heat up the house.
