To follow up the other discussion on microwave I decided it needed it's own topic. For me I use it all the time for frozen vegetables. I can quickly and easily cook and make a sauce for them using less power than it takes to run my stove for just a few minutes. I have a great microwave rice cooker, which turns out perfect rice every time. I never have coffee to reheat, but I so use it to partially defrost meat in as more traditional use.
BTW you can use aluminum foil safely in your microwave, most people don't know that so I am betting you didn't either. It is a matter of how it is used.

popcorn, reheat, steam veggies, poached eggs. I remember the days without and yes we did fine, but is sure makes a life a LOT easier.

I sanitize my kitchen sponge with it. One minute on high at the end of the day will kill the germs inside a damp sponge.

I use it to cook veggies when I'm in a rush. However, my 11-year-old decided to "bake" his Sculpey clay in the microwave on high for six minutes, resulting in a kitchen filled with hydrogen chloride gas. Neato!

When I write I have that cup of coffee alway sitting next to the macbook. It only goes down a bit at a time, a few hours later I look at it and say that I need to fill it up, but the coffee in the pot is cold (darn those green, UL, fire safety mods) so into the microwave it goes. I must not be the only one because the machine has a "reheat beverage" button on it. Ain't progress grand...
