thanks! assume then that the front page discussion threads are those that are somehow a combination of most active and where the posts originate from those that have a high blogcatalog rank?
do notice various posts that have limited replies, but still appear on front page, maybe it is just rank related? -
the ranking decides where your blog appears in the directory:
www.blogcatalog.com/directory
the highest ranked blog goes to the top of the list in each category, lowest to the end (except for sponsored listings - highlighted with a 'hint of grey' background which jump straight to the top) -
Blog Rank - a special formula that analyzes your hits, views, comments, neighborhood members and other special secret ingredients to create a numeric score based on a 100 point scale. Your Blog Rank is primarily used to determine the order blogs appear in our Directory and Search Results. The higher your score the better your placement.
Views - The number of unique visitors that have looked at your BlogCatalog listing
Hits - The number of unique visitors that have clicked through to your blog from BlogCatalog. -

This formula is like the Filet O Fish at McDonalds. We know it's there, but no one knows what it's comprised of....

I know a little bit. A base is set when your blog is approved. After that, it's based on an automated algorithm that considers popularity, links, traffic, and lot of other things.
It's not like Alexa or any other system because there is no way to directly improve it. As for what's a good rank? No one really knows. It's probably more important to focus on the blog and not the rank. Rank will take care of itself.

It actually doesn't mean anything in reality.
People with high rankings use it to undermine everyone else. People with low rankings use that as incentive to boost it. It works out for the site owners because it ensures people spend more on here. What happens when you have a really high ranking? Not much, really. No one sends you a card, you don't have naked women come over and have fun with you, and you don't even get paid. -

What is bizzare isn't that the formual is a secret, but that the very thing it is supposed to rank is secret. The formula for Google Page Rank is secret, but I at least get what it is supposed to be measuring. I don't even know what Blog Rank is supposed to be measuring.
We don't know how it is calculated, we don't know what factors in to it, and we don't know what it represents.
They might as well just hand out random numbers.-
I believe their magic formula is supposed to be measuring quality and popularity combined with involvement in the BC community. The latter thing might have nothing to do with your blog, but if rank determines where you're placed in BC listings, the formula could make sense. Its exact measurement method would be secret, to keep people from gaming it though. --- But this is all speculation on my part. I could be completely misunderstanding the ranking magic here.

BlogCatalog participation and the amount of logins you make seem to have an effect on rank.
Your site popularity is a definite.
I personally think the comment-to-post:ratio on your site may be factored in too. I say this because I have pretty high rank (68.8) for a small site that has barely 100 unique visitors per day. For comparison's sake, Problogger.net (the A-list blogger) has a rank of 71.2, yet he has 10,000 times more hits and subscribers than I do. The only thing I have that can compete with his, is my comment-to-post ratio.

Page rank, Alexa rank, Izea rank... I think lots of bloggers worry about the meaningless numbers when they should just try and post good content on their blogs!

I have found that my blogcatalog rank improves when:
1)I placed their recent readers widget in my blog
2) I placed the blog ranking widget near to the recent widget blog
3) you get into all stupid discussions and blurt out something
4) when I went into an internet cafe, and placed a score of 10 in my blog ranking widget :-)
6)When I asked other bloggers to improve my ranking
7) when I started a free review contest.
But then none of these methods do any good to your traffic directly. It just becomes a score with which you can boast. -
At first when i saw the ranking 32 on www.thelovecook.blogspot.com i thought this was a very nice ranking, now that i read this im a bit dissapointed. Still room for improvements

When you rank a blog, the ratings are 1-10; is 10 high or is 1 high?
