We all got to pic our avatar. Do you think your avatar says something about you specifically if you chose something other than your picture for your avatar?
What did you want your avatar to say about you?
What do you think my avatar says about me?

Of course I want my avatar to show something about me. I wear scarf and it shows from my avatar. And MadScientist, from your avatar I think you're a nerd. Is that correct?
-
Yep...well, I used to be a nerd... now I am a geek. The difference being I get paid better now.
I have to admit though... I don't really see the scarf thing.
Actually for my avatar, I was going for really smart, big into science, always tinkering with or making something, but able to be a little less serious (ergo Jimmy Neutron). In retrospect perhaps I should have used SPONGE BOB

Is this meaningless drivel? hmmmmmmm
I wanted to use a picture of me and only have daft ones, therefore I must of wanted to appear daft
I think your avatar is something naughty masquerading as something cute.-
Well I have adapted and decided... If you can't beat'em join'em.
In reality, this is less meaningless drivel and more about blogging. You see its part of the impression that you make since we are visual beings. And if a picture is worth a 1000 words... its a pretty good use of space. But it is nice to know if the impression you are going for with you avatar is actually sending the message that you want.

Mine says, "look, I'm a real person and not an actual dead rooster."
Yours says, "Gee, Jimmy Neutron looks like a rip-off of the Bob's Bigboy icon." -

Mine says - this is what I sell and I'm bright and cheerful too. Other than when I'm cold and miserable.

No, I'd imagine someone using a licensed character is either promoting an entertainment themed blog, or feels some kinship with the character in some way.
Typically folks who use shots of very beautiful people or parts of very beautiful people are in it for making money/splogs/spam. And you can tell them by the way they instantly start dropping links!

Well....I think it indicates that you are a student of life. I think that the it shows you have a profound respect for the natural world, in a pristine and untouched or untainted condition. I beleive that in this place out at sea observing one of Gods largest living creations, you can really sense the grander scheme of LIFE as god intended it uncluttered by all of MANS plans and designs. I think that this is evidenced by the fact that there are no manmade objects in the avatar including the boat from which the picture was taken.
Then again, you may just have thought that it was cool and did not have anything better to put up. I preferr to think I was closer on the first pass.

I think someone said you can go to www.gravatar.com and get one. Now OFF WITH YOU and dont come back till you have selected a dandy.

What!!! Are you saying Polybore's Avatar is talking about Polybore behind Polybore's back?
What does it say...?
Like some forum Frankenstein has Polybore created an avatar with life, intelligence, free will and speech?-
So now you are saying that that blasted avatar is talking about ALL the Polybores?
This is turning into a nightmare. Next you are going to tell me that this fiendish avatar, whom Polybore once considered a friend, has hooked up with some avatar of easy virtue and a virtual army of child avatars are on the way each and every one chatter, chatter, chattering.

@madscientist - excellent and you visited my blog. Like the avatar, you only see the tail of the largest mammal on earth which is what empowering oneself and others is all about....the potential for greatness is there even though the human eye can only see perhaps the tail end! Thank you for that intrepid analysis! Bravo!

My avatar says happy new yr. You avatar teamed with your name screams science freak to me, in a good way.
-
Well let me see, high IQ, classic under achiever in school, all of my friends rounded out the top 10 in my graduating class of over 900 (total class was over 1300... lot of bone heads), intense interest in physics, energy, gravity.... I was not an "Erkle" level nerd, but I was pretty high on the nerd-o-meter. I was writing programs for computers when you had all your friends at your house because you had a 300 baud modem and they did not have any connectivity.
Couple that with a life long interest in weapons design (I always wanted to work for a DOD contractor and wear a lab coat... wierd I know)... and a stent in the military and excellent marksmanship and an near insatiable interest in the documents and intentions or our founding fathers... and what you end up with....
is a MadScientist
Not really sure now... that Jimmy Neutron fits the bill

I'm hoping my avatar says that I stand behind what I write (using my own face to say it) and that I have taken a bit of time to think about the avatar and therefore I care about what I put out there.
-
That is kind of what I was aluding to Sebastyne. The avatar is what people see before they even begin to read, and it conveys a message about you even before you really lay be knowledge on the reader. If if you are a pulitzer prize winning author, a poor choice of avatar could diminish the impact of your writing.
I am learning this even as I am writing this stuff now, I am reconsidering my choice of avatar. My choice does not convey that I am mature, intelegent, or to be taken seriously. Why would anyone ready my posts on alternative, renewable energy resources, complex chemical and mechanical processes when they are staring at a picture of Jimmy Neutron... who while well meaning and super smart causes more problems and trouble than he solves.

My avatar says that I love my Grand Daughter to the fullest. It's a pix of her. =)
What I think your says about you? to me it says you are possibly the smart nerd type and humorous...lol..hell I don't know...lol -

Now see, I did not think that your avatar said that you were "simple" (not like in a Forest Gump way) but rather a inteligent, inquisitive, curious sort of way. I agree it does say friendly, but I thiknk it also says mischievious and flirtatious. But maybe thats just me. After all what do I know, I am no psychologist.

Sounds like your avatar should have been an "Invitation"... Also, I don't see a halo, but there is a definite glow there over your head.
I think it says you are fun and full of life, likeable and personable, young and energetic. Now, I think I will go see what you blog about to see how right or wrong I was.

That I have an alter ego? That I like to monkey around? That I'm stuffed with fluff? That sock monkeys are a girls best friend? I'll put my finger on it in a minute.
-
Mine was recently changed but BC's buggy system keeps popping back to the old one. It should be me and my daughter in hula gear. It says I'm a mom and it says I love the outdoors and warm weather, especially the beach. I am also a laugh-out-loud person, not very inhibited with my humor.

Just in case some people didnt know where to get an avatar when posting on a wordpress blog, you can go to www.gravatar.com and they'll hook you up. They associate your email address with the avatar pic so when you post on a comment on a blog, that appears. I hope this helped some of the people here. Have fun and check out my profile when you got some extra time.
-
It says you short cutted your way through the sign-up process so that you could get to posting right away. Or possibly that you have issues with making decisions and so have too many choices and are paralyzed by choice overload...
-------
That is so very wrong . -
-
So it does. Actually, your avatar kind of looks like one of those hot chicks from the Final Fantasy videos. (Computer Animated)... its interesting light and hairstyle I guess that give it that appearance.
However, that only tells us about the outside. What does it tell us about who you are? What your like...when your not busy being beautiful?
Also, you forgot to tell me what you think MY avatar says about me.

I don't think you should use an image that does not belong to you for your avatar. Unless you created, voiced, or animated that character, I think you should change your avatar.
I believe that avatars should represent you in some way. That is why I created this logo for mine.
I also have a bone to pick with people who use celebrity photos for their avatars.
What is the point in that?
It just seems dishonest to me.-
Chasemarch - To some degree I agree with your point of view. In as much as the avatar should represent you in some way. That is why I chose JImmy Neutron as my avatar. He is smart, funny, inventive, always in trouble, always planning his next invention, always problem solving... However, I do not own the image, but to people who recognize the character would immediately think science physics etc... all of which is why I chose it.
As for celebrity photos... well.. maybe there is something about that particular celebrity that they identify with and so they use it.
But what does your avatar say about you? The concept of a picture is worth a 1000 words applies. So do you care to explain your choice?

Mine says "..."
It doesn't say anything, it's a damn picture....and it definitely doesn't say anything about me because I don't talk about myself behind my back. -

Hi Mad Scientist,
My avatar represents the fact that I am a teacher. It is basically a children's block toy. The letters that are visible are my initials C.M. for Chase March.
I think this logo says a lot and is easily recognizable as a brand. I am hoping that it is unique and simple enough that people on the www will recognize it as me immediately. -
