I just want a good idea of a few things you all don't want to see on blogs.
I know lots of Blogger believe that Google Ads are a distraction or just another MFA site.

I don't like going to Blogs where Ads run over the content. I don't like Blogs that are not neat and the Html work is sloppy.
you?

A few ads don't bother me. But if I have to hunt for a post because of too many ads I'll just move on in most cases.

And auto-play music/adverts chase me away rather quickly too.
    1. Nicholebeard
lol...yeah turned my auto-play off and I only have a few ads but I might take them off they dont make money anyway!
  2. zawadi
lol yes music on auto-play is annoying.
The Ads that speak are just noisy and if possible, just please block them all out lol
  3. morinn
flashy and glittering graphics chase me away. i hate them in blogs.

How about this BC member, who found his own content on another blog?

Seen this before and the site owner was contacted and the content was removed.
I wondered if he tried emailing.
I'm not sure about copyrights and how it all works to be honest. I know that to cut and paste a bloggers content is just dumb.
Do like I do when I don't want to write, just don't!

the sidebar of a blog, I don't like when the sidebar is not loading at all or they is too much stuff on it, like 2 chat box from different network. lol
    1. clioandme
Yes, too many fancy widgets just slow a blog down. Since there's so much on offer on the internet, it is not a good idea to test a potential reader's patience.

Let me add: blogs that have a layout wider than my 1084 x 768 screen resolution.
  6. zawadi
yea my blogs used to load bad, because of lots of large images.
If the sidebar is neat with links, it's ok, they can have 10000 of them.
    not like this

    ****
    **** *****
***** buttons all over the place

Dang that OCD coming out again

I like blogs that give me something helpful and don't waste my time by taking forever to get around to it.

Also I dislike reading one wide column of text.
    1. Norski
Glad to hear another voice with that message.

When I was a copywriter/designer, 'expert' opinions varied, but never very far from saying that fifty characters is about as long as a line of text should be.

      It's good advice.

Poor spelling gets me every time. A few mistakes are okay, but they do make spell check for a reason...
    1. RobSellen
Are you the sepillng police then? ;o)

      Joking. ;o)
    2. suburbqueen
Nope, not the police...but I can't read when one too many words are spelled wrong.
    3. clioandme
      Bad writing gets me too.

I'm willing to make allowances for non-native speakers, but some would do well to spend more time writing less, but more accurate prose.
    4. Norski
Eye thank pure spooling dent meek knew deference.

Wee kin underspend jest vine, iamb grinner daunt mutter two.
    5. clioandme
That goes beyond the allowances I had in mind.
    6. Norski
      stoneman,

      I should hope so.
    7. ThriftShopRomantic
Absolutely the spelling. Type-os happen, and we all are pressed for time. But a LOT of spelling errors make me question how much the person really cares about their content.

And when the blogger doesn't care, why should readers?
  9. CHESSNOID
Yeah, I am not to crazy about auto music play either. I usually keep the volume low or muted on my pc when I surf
    1. suburbqueen
      Me too...Mine stays muted.

A top annoyance for me, on blogs and other Web pages, are those ads that overlap content - an other incompetent, or ill-considered, coding.

I've nothing about advanced tech - providing that there's a reason for it being there.
  11. clioandme
Oh yes, Norski. Apropos overlapping content, I have a hard time with blogs that won't render properly in Safari. After all, Safari is now available for all Windows users too, so there's no excuse not to try your blog out in Safari. You should try it out in everything possible, including other computers and platforms when you get a chance.

Safari for Windows and Mac: www.apple.com/safari/
    1. Norski
      Ideally, yes.

Practically, someone in my position can't have very many hardware variations around: computers cost major dollars.

Cross-platform compatibility is important: but my approach is to keep code simple (or, for blogs, use an established service's templates - which presumably are relatively glitch-free).

      Thanks for the link!

And: all BlogCatalogers who see this: If you see a blog or site of mine, and it has annoying features - please let me know!
    2. clioandme
I'm sometimes annoying like that. If I have a moment, I tell people in their shoutboxes here. Some appreciate it. Others not.
    3. Norski
"Some appreciate it. Others not." And, there's no way of knowing before posting a comment.

For me, I appreciate that sort of 'annoyance.' It's amazing, the sort of glaring errors authors and coders can miss.
    4. ThriftShopRomantic
I'm guessing those kind of helpful comments only feel helpful if the person is tech-savvy enough to correct the issues. Otherwise, it's huge frustration.
    5. Norski
      ThriftShopRomantic,

I see what you mean, but that sort of thing has given me incentive to learn new skills.
    6. clioandme
My points are usually very non-technical.
  12. zawadi
Thanks for all the comments here.
No overlapping, misspelled, wide and long paragraphs on the blogs?
    1. Norski
That's a pretty good summing-up, in my view.
  13. clioandme
I guess I could add no teeny tiny fonts and not fonts in psychedelic or pastel colors on a background that blends into them.
    1. suburbqueen
I worry about my font color, but I've yet to hear a complaint so I'm guessing I'm okay.
  14. bobobimbo
I totally agree. I hate those with too many ads... esp one after/before every single post. Sometimes it makes it hard to even find the posts!

Those that have awful font colours too! I've seen yellow against a white background... It's makes it so difficult to read..

    2 Things:
    -Bad Content and
    -Bad Site Design/Layout
  16. caseyc
Paid posts. Those are a real turn off to me. It's a bit like selling your soul.
