There have been so many trends or fads or just stuff that everyone around me seemed to be doing that I, for one reason or another, never got involved with. . .

How 'bout you?

    All of them.

Especially, the "Macerana" (I'm not even sure how to spell it)
    1. DocNicole
      What?!!! I am teaching you...
  2. robertstevenson
That's another one for me too.

I also never saw American Idol.
    1. DocNicole
WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT?!!?!?!? You people are killing me!!!

you are so lucky I am in your world now...

      I am here to help.

    Reality TV

I've also never seen American Idol, Dancing with the Stars, really any of those "reality" shows. I did watch the first season of Big Brother (US version), but that's about it
    1. robertstevenson
I think Reality TV started with Jerry Springer. To me the most unreal tv is the reality stuff. But ratings skyrocket.
    2. DocNicole
When Hillary is president she will make it a misdemeanor to not watch American Idol

      *DING* another life saved
    3. robertstevenson
      Hmmmmmmm Hillary TV?
  4. drdental
Reality TV is a big one with me as well, although I did watch the Real World in the early days - circa 1990.

The tattoo trend is hugely popular these days, and I won't be participating.

I could think of many more, but there's a start.
  5. JillSaxon
The wearing of those God awful He-Man boots women seem to like. The weather in Los Angeles doesn't call for anything like that so it just looks stupid to me.
    1. DocNicole
Oh the Uggs? Yah I hate those...I was just in Disneyland though and lots of people were wearing them in the HEAT!!
  6. Anniepooh
I only got a cell phone last year ... no camera on mine, either.

    I don't have a MySpace.

Up until 2004 I had a less than 3GB total desktop - I think 164 mhz processor? It was sooooooo slow. I've had 3 computers in the last 4 years including this, my first laptop (the Red Dell one-only FAD I ever did!).

We got cable TV in November after 10 years of not having it--which meant NO TV here since nothing came in without it.

Never played DDR ... never had a mohawk ... never pierced anything but my ears ... the only reality show I watch is Top Chef or Ax men :O)
  7. robertstevenson
I was with you right up until DDR. After I googled it, I realized what it was and that I played it with my sons once or twice when we were waiting for a movie.
  8. SteveRebooted
Watching reality television. I even tried to watch American Idol for the first time ever, and my cable went out! LOL
  9. BennyGreenberg
c'mon guys - so you all collected pogs?
    1. jafabrit
LOL! my kids loved those stupid things.
    2. JillSaxon
      "collected"??

      More like... still do.

Pogs were awesome. Some of those Slammers (I think that's what they were called) were pretty sweet.
    3. robertstevenson
No poggs, but 2 pet rocks and a mood ring!
    4. twistedteenager
      Star Wars tazos
  10. aningeniousname
Never had a mobile phone and I never will.
    1. daniel23
      same here.
  11. Shiley
You know how rappers have bling in their mouth? I'm so not doing that.
    1. Shiley
Ones I did do were God awful jelly shoes, dressing like Madonna, my mom was thrilled with that especially since it was the 80's look, Florescent clothes I had a thing for, mismatch shoes, earings, and the eye shadow on each eye was a different color. Thank God I got over all that!
    2. legbamel
No, no, they have grillz. [gag] I won't be wearing fake gold braces, pants that make my hops into a mushroom (and give me plumber's butt) so that they don't fall off (but still drag on the floor behind me, fraying into bits), shirts that expose my belly and bra straps, or any one of the 52 incredibly stupid hair trends thrust upon women in the last couple of decades.

I've never seen Pretty Woman and never will. I don't watch reality TV, either, nor do I listen to commercial radio. Crocs and Uggs and drugs are not my style, and Apple cannot fad me or advertise me into buying the iPod or iPhone or their silly iTunes. I remember when words didn't have little Is in front of them.

Platform shoes should be outlawed. Text message that in your cell phone and vote for it! [whew]
  12. Nicole10112
I'm with most of you guys on the reality tv stuff. Pogs on the other hand I did collect =)

But a cell phone, I don't know if I could be without it anymore. I originally bought it for the standard "emergency" case, but now I pretty much exceed the minutes every month.
    1. jafabrit
Neither of my kids have a land line phone because they have cell phones. Seems like a lot of young people find it easier when sharing a flat or dorm to just skip the land line phones and have their own cell phone (cheaper too).
  13. wehireu
American Idol and almost everything on television. I like to watch television in the laundromat. It is something to do while folding cloths.
    1. DocNicole
Killing me...you don't watch American idol?
  14. DrBurst
I never played world of warcraft...

Well, I played the demo and hated it
    1. DocNicole
You must have a girlfriend then
  15. TimMc
I don't watch reality TV...actually, I don't watch much TV at all. I find most of it repulsive. No cable or satellite TV. No tattoos, no piercings here. I don't drink energy drinks (which I think qualify as a fad). The list could go on and on.

Hmmm...here's an interesting thought: Is engaging in a fad the response to one's own vanity? Perhaps not every time, but I think it may ring true in many instances.
  16. Norski
I resolutely refuse to participate in goldfish swallowing, and you will not find me wearing a raccoon coat.
  17. TimMc
Now wait a second...my raccoon coat is a fad???!!! Dangit, I thought I was totally original while sporting it. Sheesh.
    1. legbamel
      It's retro, darlin'.
    2. TimMc
      Oh, whew...I feel better.
  18. Svelmoe
That Internet thing is only a phase. It'll never amount to anything.....
    1. pamelabaker
      That surprises me.
  19. markstoneman
Did anyone hear Peter Segal's commentary on this phenomenon this evening? It's pretty funny: www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=90234087
    1. robertstevenson
Funny: all the noncomformists are conformists.
    2. ThriftShopRomantic
Heh, reminds me of a line from an Austin Lounge Lizards song--

"Her friends were all non-conformists/She became a non-conformist, too."
    3. robertstevenson
Oh No! I'm turning into an Austin Lounge Lizard!
  20. dailymindjob
    Email forwards. Delete, delete, delete...
    1. DocNicole
Ditto, unless I ask you to forward them.

Otherwise you will end up with hypertriglyceridemia if you do NOT forward my emails
    2. dailymindjob
Nothing a little plasmapheresis can't fix. Hook me up and drain out a bag of butter. I'll never forget that patient. Lil bit o pancreatitis.
    3. JillSaxon
Maybe people should read this before they forward an email:

Texting...I hate texting. I resisted getting a cell phone for years. I have a simple one now and on most days I wish I didn't have one at all.
    1. DocNicole
I love texting. I now refuse to ever talk to anyone. Mainly because anytime someone calls they are soliciting free medical advice.
    2. robertstevenson
I've got this pain in my arm when I do this (lifting my elbow over head)
    3. legbamel
A whole hour has gone by, and no one has told you to stop doing that?!
    4. robertstevenson
Thanks my arms was really killing me. I can put it down now.
    5. DocNicole
LOLOL...I would recommend to stop texting me for free medical advice. Should make your arm feel better.
  22. timethief
    chain letters and chain emails
    celebrity worship
    reality tv
    1. DocNicole
You can worship me timethief! I am not a celebrity.
  23. balidreamhome
fashion, wags, but reality TV, I do like to watch Miami Ink, it's nice and inspirational in some way..
  24. pamelabaker
most t.v. and all video games
  25. lynyrdschuyler
As a man, I promise to never get pregnant-too many people doing it nowadays
  26. PetLvr
Well, I've never seen the movie "E.T." .. And, I never saw any of the original "Star Wars" movies until "Revenge of the Sith" came out a few years ago - then, I broke down and rented the previous 5 and watched them all in one weekend. Saw Revenge of the Sith in a theatre, for a change.
    1. Anok
      You've never seen E.T.?!?!?!?!?!?!
    1. twistedteenager
Disco is great if it's not the tacky 80s shite. I agree with punk, though I understand the meaning for it.
  27. jaffermaniar
    The iPod mania.
I don't have one, don't plan to own one in the near future either.

I'm happy with my Sony Ericsson W810i.
  28. roastfrog
    Crocs shoes. Zombies/Vampires/Werewolves on Facebook.
... and, like some of the above, iPods, Star Wars, MySpace and the Macarena.

Wait a minute-- what on earth have I been doing all these years??
  29. kath
I'm so not into Martha Stewart's ponchos, stick thin figures, Crocs- i think their ugly...high waisted skirts, G-strings and skinny jeans.
  30. lynyrdschuyler
yeah, i'll go with Crocs--they sure are ugly.
  31. gosmelltheflowers
    Snorting cocaine in college...

    It changed friends of ours.
    1. twistedteenager
      What about outside college?
  32. JudithHeartSong
those incredibly huge garish plastic clogs.... yes! Crocs.........
    1. timethief
There are still people wearing them -- ugly! What can be more ugly and make your feet sweat more than those plastic shoes do?
  33. RTBjr73
I only wear properly fitted jeans, pants, and slacks. I never got into rolling up my pants legs, wearing them too long, or wearing my pants so tight that you cuold tell what religion I am.

Oh yeah, I always kept my butt inside of them also.
    1. timethief
lowcut jeans and visible thongs and butt cracks --- yuck!
fat chicks in bare midriff muffin tops --- yuck!
  34. calais50
Crocs shoes. I will never have a pair!
    1. calais50
Oops, I see Judith already got to this one...
    2. kevingoodman
      Crocs - that's not a fad that's comfort.
    3. daniel23
      they suck!
    4. pamelabaker
I just have to jump in on the croc protests... comfort does not have to look that bad!!!
    5. lawrencevon
      oh dear. yes. fashion disaster.

i think it only works with a gardening outfit.

  35. calais50
Oh, sometimes I feel like I'm the only woman with her natural hair color.
  36. RTBjr73
    the Prince Albert...HELL NO!!!
  37. timethief
From the 1920s to 2000s there are lists of all of the craziest fads that have come and gone. Go back a few decades and read about the silly to serious fads that helped change our society and create a pop-culture. FWIW there are wikipedia entry to fads through the ages. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:1980s_fads
  38. ThriftShopRomantic
I'm one of the few people in the world that doesn't seem to have a cell phone. (Not that that's necessarily a fad, but...)

I didn't put one of those magnetic ribbons on my car... And I don't have any tattoos...

    (I know-- I'm a big yawn.)
    1. timethief
      @Jenn
I don't own a cell phone either and I say 'no' to tatoos. They are the current fad along with face metal, which I don't have either.
    2. ThriftShopRomantic
      Ah! Two of us.

With tattoos, if others have 'em, I don't begrudge it-- there's some nicely done art. I just feel that I change what I'm most interested in so much, there's just nothing I would want to have hanging around on me, for the rest of my life. Talk about a commitment!
    3. Anok
I don't have one either!!! I'm very happy sans cell phone too.
  39. baldeagle
1970's - didn't do drugs despite living in SF (I was too young)
1980's - I didn't own parachutte pants (although I did have a members only jacket).
    1990's - I didn't own a pet rock or a Furby.
2000's - I don't watch American Idol or Dancing with the Stars.
  40. robertstevenson
(as he wipes a single tear from his cheek) I'm so proud to be friends with you guys
  41. jackpayne
I have always stiff-armed all nod-your-head-and-walk-in-a straight-line, Pied Piper-type activities. Sheep-like reaction is for sheep.
  42. robertstevenson
I was wondering where you were. Couldn't picture you as a sheep.
  43. kdawg68
Remember when Kriss Kross started wearing their pants backwards - yeah, I never got into that.

I did, however, "french roll" my pants legs in middle school, much to my horror now when I look back at pictures.
    1. Anok
      Buwahahahahaha....you rolled your pants!!!

I never did the kriss kross thing either. Or the shaved under-hair that girls did for a while (You know what I'm talking about? the lower half of the head was cut real short, but they still had a ponytail?)

I never shaved designs in my hair or eyebrows....

And currently I do not subscribe to the modern fashion trends, generally speaking. Particularly not those GIANT designer sunglasses that make everybody look bug-eyed
    2. ekim941
OMG Anok, that sounds like someone went to the hair stylist and ran out of money.
I knew a girl in High school that had the left half of her head shaved. She looked like "Two Face" from the Batman movie.
    3. kdawg68
      LMAO @ Two Face.

Yes, I remember the shaved hair thing - I remember one girl in particular who thought she was "gangsta" like that and wore a huge oversized gold chain of a dollar bill sign to go with it.

I also never did the whole Starter jacket "parka" thing. For a while there, I think every other guy in my school had a Chicago Bulls or Oakland Raiders (techincally L.A. Raiders back then) parka.
  44. pele1
I'll address this right away...no DocNicole I don't nor would I ever watch American Idol. LOL

I know cell phones aren't a "fad or trend" but I don't carry one unless I'm going out alone and I especially don't text. Its the most rude thing in the world to be spending time with someone (especially if you haven't seen them in awhile) and have them staring down half the time. I'm sorry but if you can't live without that for 2 hours, you've got issues!
  45. timethief
    @pele 1
I sure agree about the cell phones and texting. I had one friend who would not put the dratted things away and communicate face-to-face no matter how many times she was asked to. You will note the word "had" is in past tense. Like you I also have never watched American idol.
  46. Donlewis
    Voting mostly
  47. DrowseyMonkey
I don't have a cell phone, and I'm not on facebook or anything like that. But that's cause I've learned from the past. Yep ... I used to sport a female mullet
  48. daniel23
    all together...

    - voting
    - mobile phones
    - global warming hysteria
    - shaggy hair
    - iPods
    - credit
    - hard drugs
  49. chicky401
I never really followed any trend. I usually did things just to be different when I was younger. I had black, blue and purple hair as nobody else did in my school. Went and got my tongue pierced 12 years ago before everybody started doing it, then it became a trend. Funny thing is though I never followed any trends I always had a lot of friends. Now I am who I am and my style is my style. This time nobody steal it!
    Just joking
    1. lawrencevon
      good for you!
  50. sherliez
I don't like voting either and soap operas
  51. lawrencevon
elephant pants (had some following here when i was in college), (pinoy) big brother, ipod...

white denim pants (its too poluted in the city!)...

fitness first (id rather meditate and do crunches at home)...
  52. lulubelleb
    > Starbucks
    > pedicures
    > martinis
  53. taosunset
    texting (I'm too slow)
    tatoos
    piercings
little dogs you carry in a purse
    drugs (never have, never will)
    plastic surgery
    botox
    spray tans
    probably more!
